Rahu Kalam and Ketu's Kala Deepam

Every planet in every day has it's ruling time. Ravi, Chandra, Kuja, Budha, Guru, Sukra and
Sani planets will have it's Hora timings. During the particular planet rules at a particular time. It
is other wise called a 'Hora Time'.

Like wise Rahu also has its ruling time. It is called a Rahukalam. Like wise Ketu also has its
own time but it is not in light. No one starts any ventures, or travels or any other matters during
this period as Rahu Kalam as it will give negative effects. To nullify the negative effects of
Rahu, antecedents quote if lighting a deepa at the point of Rahu Kalam in a Goddess deity
temple, the negative effects will be nullified. By lighting a deepa in Rahu kalam, the native will
get the blessings of Goddess Kanakadurga.

To guard the negative effects of Rahu kalam, the only one who could effectively nullify the
negative effects of Rahu is Lord Maha Ganapati. If we light a deepam at the foot of Lord Maha
Ganapati, all negative effects will be nullified. Progress can be seen and things will be fulfilled.
The natives who are under the evil influence of Rahu can do so to wipe off the negative effects
of Rahu.

Those natives who are suffering with more difficulties due to the effect of evil effects of other
plants, the only solution available is to light a lamp at the foot of Maha Ganapati on Sunday
and Wednesday. The pratima should be placed on dharba for more positive results.

Rahu Kaal
Rahukaal is a very negative period to be shunned for all auspicious and beneficial activities.
The general Rahu kala time found in panchang and calendars is wrong and misguiding as they
do not take the varying sunrise and sunset into account.

Rahukaalam (also spelled as Rahukal or Rahu kalam) or the period of Rahu is a certain
amount of time every day that is considered inauspicious for any new venture according to
Indian astrology (Vedic).

In Hindu mythology, Rahu Kala is one of the 8 segments of the day and considered
inauspicious period in Indian astrology due to its associated with malefic, Rahu . The segments
are calculated by taking the total time between sunrise and sunset, at a given place, and then
dividing this time duration by 8. Astronomically in the HinduPanchangas, the ever varying
planetary configurations mean that the auspicious hours during each day will not always fall at
the same moment of time. Rahukalam and Yama Ghantam are the two time periods which are
especially considered inauspicious or unlucky (Ashub).

The planets according to Indian astronomers were

the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Rahukaalam and
Gulikaalalam are calculated based on these planets. Even though Rahu and Ketu are not
physical bodies, they are sensitive points on the intersection of the ecliptic (the apparent path
of motion of the Sun) by the Moon's orbit. Rahu is the northern point and Ketu is the southern
point. Ancient astronomers felt that the mighty Rahu and Kethu have the strength to eat the
sun, thus causing a solar eclipse. Hence it is considered inauspicious to begin any undertaking
during this "Rahukaalam". Every day this Rahukaalam lasts for around 90 minutes, but the
duration differs according to the length of the time between sunrise to sunset.

Rahukaalam falls on each day, and its span varies and needs to be calculated as per the
sunrise and sunset time. You may use the times below if you do not have access to accurate
Rahukaal. These times are accurate only if the day lasts for 12 hours, and the sunrise is at
6.00 AM. You can adjust an approximation according to the sunrise and day length in your
area.

All you need to remember is the phrase

pooja performance is not prohibitted in rahu kaal unless it is related to rahu or durga or
saraswati ....
One of the fast growing pooja in Malaysia and Singapore is the Ragu Kalam Durga pooja. Held
weekly on every Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, this pooja attracts many people- Young
people who perform this Pooja will excel in studies while the unmarried will be able to find a
good life partner, married ladies will have a happy married life and their families will proper, the
childless will have children and have a happy and prosperous life. Of all the days, Tuesday is
the most auspicious day. The time is fixed viz: 3.00 pm and 4.30 pm on Tuesdays, 10.30 am
and 12.00 pm on Fridays and 4.30 pm and 6.00 pm on Sundays.

There are no specific mantras but in temples devotees will conduct bhajans and chant the
name of Durga Matha. At the end of the pooja, one is required to do Sangkalpam . Lime is
always been used in medication because of its acidity that can cure many diseases. One who
wants to perform this pooja needs to invert the lime after it has been cut into half. Remember ,
this is the most difficult part, if you cut a unripe lime, U cant invert it and the same goes to a
ripen lime. So the selection of the lime is very much needed. The main purpose is to bring out
the dermis part of the lime which is usually white in colour. The lime is resembling us and we
need show the inner part of us to God. Garment of illusion, greedy, lust and angriness need to
throw away before God. The white dermis of the lime shows our pure conscious and the darker
part ( green in colour which is hidden inside ) is our Maya.

One can use any type of wicks in this pooja and I have listed out some of the wicks and its
significance. Wick made of banana stem fibre removes offences before God and ancestral
curse, cotton wick- obtains all good fortune, lotus stem fibre ( wick ) removes karma from
pervious birth and establishes a happy and prosperous life, white madder plant pulp of the
bark increase wealth and dispels misfortunes, new yellow cotton cloth obtains the grace of
Goddess Parasakti and frees one from entanglements and will not be affected by further
misfortunes and New Red cotton cloth- removes any marriage obstacles and child bearing
obstacles, keep on free from spells, mantras and tantras. The wick is a symbol of energy and
light where alight emits brightness. The point of the wick tells us that God is everywhere. The
tambalam ( silver plates) reflect Brahma ( creator ) and the Turmeric rice ( uncooked rice )
resemble Maha Vishnu. The turmeric rice stabilise the lime and it acts exactly as God Vishnu
who is a preserver and stabilise between born ( Brahma ) and death ( Rudra ). The top of the
half cut inverted lime signifies Shiva. As the oil ( ghee ) is contained, just like Lords Shiva
contained Ganga ( the river ) in His hair. The ghee and the flame signifies Goddess Laxmi who
blessed us with her wealth, the brightness of the flame resemble Goddess Saraswathy who
blessed us with education and knowledge and the heat from the flame signifies Mother Durga.
