Since the latest publication of the KKS Guidelines and the key part in the year 2007 the
VGB-Working Panel Reference Designation and Plant Documentation dealt various
applications for amendments respectively specification of the KKS keys. The demand for
the applications resulted from new technologies for power plant process, especially for
technologies for CO2-separation und the use of renewable energy sources. In addition the
results of experiences in the project management were integrated.
Decision was made to implement the results as index E. Please see thereto the revision
sheet 7, status January 2010.

The classifying coding letters and designations are project-independently in the KKS keys
as follows:
- Function key, for F1 / F1 F2 / F1 F2 F3 on breakdown level 1
- Equipment unit key, for A1 / A1 A2 on breakdown level 2
- Component key, for B1 / B1 B2 on breakdown level 3
The plain text designation of the key may be modified on a project-specific basis but only
provided that no content changes take place. Modifications must be taken by the parties
involved to the project.
"Blocked" coding letters are reserved for future technologies and new engineering
systems. They may only be allocated and released by the VGB Working Panel Reference
and Designation of Power Plants.
The letters of the alphabet are divided up between the main groups A1 and B1 . For this
reason certain letters may not be used within each group.

These numbering code elements are subject to agreement between the project parties and
are project-independently regarding the numbering systems and the direction of num-
bering. However, the following principles apply:
- As a rule numbering starts anew when one of the preceding code elements
changes.
- Numbering may be consecutive or grouping.
- Numbering need not be continuous.
- Numbering conventions, once established, may not be altered, not even in the event
of changes made in the progress of planning.
- Redundant zeros must be written. Exceptions are fixed in the following one.
- An application-specific scheme of numbering may be established. However, such
schemes may not have the effect of reserving numbers in other applications, not
even within the same engineering discipline.

are marked within location of a power station. The breakdown level 0 is relative for the
three types of code and must be fixed in the case of application of the project-taken parts
with respect to:
- Contents
- Type of data character (A or N)
- Direction of numbering
For the direction of numbering (or lettering) project-dependent local characteristics are
determining. The definition of numbering direction in the breakdown level 0 should take
place together with the numbering direction in the prefix of breakdown level 1 (see also
there).
Breakdown level 0 may be omitted if the remaining characteristic remains clear. This has
to be specified between the project parties.

4 Notation of Codes
The codes can be written with and without spacing but however it must be represented in
such a way that misinterpretations are avoided. The allowable way of writings is fixed.
Their use for any intended purpose is to be specified between the project parties.
Spaced way of writing supports the detectability and memory quality of codes. It can be
spaced by blank codes as well as by more-cellular way of writing
"Small spacing"
Blank spaces or dividing lines between the breakdown levels for codes which do not have
visually to be seized within a time limit.
"Large spacing"
Blank spaces or dividing lines between the alpha part and the numeric parts within the
breakdown levels, if these are more than four data code places long, e.g. for codes in the
control room, where in relatively short time codes must be seized.

Supports are not identified in line with the originator principle. They can be allocated to a
system designation or a building/structure designation in breakdown level 1.
System-oriented identification is a feasible alternative when parts of the support can be
allocated to a particular system.
A building/structure-oriented identification is preferable when parts of different systems
share supports.
Supports are identified by BQ in breakdown level 2.
Details of application are to be specified between the project parties
5.4.3 Supply Systems
Where equipment units identified in breakdown level 1 and 2, require their own supply
systems, these supply systems are identified as subsystems to the overall system with an
identification code in breakdown level 1.
Supply systems serving several main groups of breakdown level 1 are treated as inde-
pendent supply systems and are provided with a key within the following main groups in
F1:
G Water supply and disposal
K Reactor auxiliary system
Q Auxiliary system
S Ancillary system
User (system) Supply system
Code Designation Code Designation
L.. Steam, water, gas cycle Auxiliary system
Q ..
M.. Main machine set (common to L.. and M..)
If several systems F2 or F3 are connected to a particular supply system, the following code
letters are stipulated for the corresponding data character F2 or F3 in breakdown level 1:
V Lubricant supply system
W Sealing fluid supply system
X Fluid supply system for control and protection equipment.
The stipulations for V and W do not apply to main groups A, B, C, D, U and Z of break-
down level 1.

The use of the letters at data characters F2 and F3 is illustrated in the following table using
the sealing fluid supply system as an example.
User (system) Supply system
Code Designation Code Designation
LA. Feedwater system
Sealing fluid supply system
LB. Steam system LW. for steam, water, gas cycle
(common to LA., LB. u. LC.)
LC. Condensate system
LAB Feedwater piping system
Feedwater sealing water
LAC Feedwater pump system LAW system (common to LAB,
LAC and LAD)
LAD HP feedwater heating system

Exceptions are, for example, the subdistributors at the main machine sets and heavy
machinery and the subdistributors in electrical, control and instrumentation cubicles and
cabinets, which in breakdown level 1 are identified according to the main machine set or
heavy machinery, cubicle or cabinet.
In breakdown level 2 the subdistributors are to be identified by the key A1 = G (electro-
technical equipment).
Penetrations through the reactor containment
Such penetrations are identified by JML=reactor containment, cable penetration in break-
down level 1 according to the originator principle.
Connections
Identification of connections is performed in line with DIN 40719 Part 2 in a dedicated code
block separated from the existing code designation by a colon ":" as required and accord-
ing to the originator principle. This code block may contain any combination of alphanu-
meric symbols.
Cable Number
For the classifying part of the cable characteristic the characteristic one of the two cable
goals is used totally or partly, whereby the characteristic of the cable goal is usually used,
which stands further in front in the alphabet.
The numbering part of the cable no. consists of four numerical data characters or of three
numerical and one alphabetical character; grouping according to voltage level, for
example, is allowable.
5.6.2 Electrical Equipment
Transformer Systems for Power Transmission and Auxiliary Power Supply
These transformers are identified on breakdown level 1. In breakdown level 2, the individ-
ual windings are identified (but not on a phase-specific basis) by means of GT for trans-
former equipment and numbered starting on the high-voltage side. For further details see
DIN 42513.
Switchgear, Battery Chargers, Inverters and Battery Sets
These systems and items of equipment are identified regardless of equipment location in
the classifying part of breakdown level 1 in accordance with the rules for main group
F1 = B. If the letters available are insufficient, FN may be used. In such instances the first
character of FN has a classifying purpose. In the second number of FN the fields are
counted over.
5.6.3 Control and Instrumentation Equipment
5.6.3.1 Measuring Circuits
The identification code of the measuring circle covers the recording of measurement,
preparation and distribution as well as the registering and indicating measured variable
processing. Measuring circles are assigned marking-technically to the system, in which the
measured variable is measured.
On breakdown level 2, direct measuring circuits are identified by means of A1 = C, indirect
measuring circuits (linked or calculated) by means of A1 = F and in A2 according to the
measured physical variable (e.g. pressure, temperature) in accordance with DIN 19227
Part 1.

Given the possibilities shown in the table, it is not practicable to meet all possible require-
ments for identification of discrete process-related functions (e.g. functional group control).
Thus for example, it may be necessary to use items which are identified differently on
breakdown level 1 (main system and associated parts of auxiliary and ancillary systems) in
order to fulfil a given process-related task (functional group). Identification of the functional
groups involved in process-related tasks so as to relate them to the principal task con-
cerned may be performed by using the alpha characters in F1 F2 F3 of the principal proc-
ess-related task.
In this application, however, a suitable identifier such as a prefixed Y should be used to
indicate that a software coding unit is concerned, thus to rule out confusion with process-
related codes. This code has to be specified between the parties to the project.

The KKS Guidelines do not contain all the rules necessary for a project. There are free
spaces for which clear definitions have to be made between the purchaser
(owner/operator) and the vendor (architect/engineer/ supplier) in the form of project-
specific establishments prior to completion of the contract. In the Guidelines such aspects
are indicated by the remark "Details of application to be specified between the parties to
the project". A list of such establishments is given below.
