ANALYSIS
A. What steps of job analysis did June do in order to arrive at a job description?
Junel Reyes may be new at his job. He may even know nothing about the
responsibilities and tasks of a mixer operator. But that does not mean Reyes cannot
learn the trade and be an expert in this field.
To achieve his goal, Reyes took time to observe Mang Ceto, a highly skilled
mixer operator, at work. He took down notes and watched how things are done in
this side of production department. Therefore, his first step is collecting information.
Probably not contented as an observer, Reyes engaged Mang Ceto into a one-on-
one interview wherein he asked several questions about responsibilities and, perhaps,
work-related experiences of being a mixer operator. Identifying critical tasks is Reyes
next step.
To ensure he would get honest and candid answers from the mixer operator,
Reyes appeased his mind and told him that he just wanted to learn from the expert
such as Mang Ceto. In this situation, Reyes showed Mang Ceto that he is not a
threat, that he is not there to replace him and that he is indeed harmless although it
does not necessarily mean that Reyes would spill all the beans and tell Mang Ceto
the truth why he had been interested in his work and what he would do to the
valuable information he had just extracted from the mixer operator himself.
B. Which methods of job analysis were performed by Junel? What other methods do you
suggest in order to make his job more efficient?
To achieve initial understanding of the job, Junel Reyes used the observation
and in-depth interview method. He familiarized himself with the operations of the
production department through the help of Mang Ceto.
To gain deeper knowledge of the subject, Reyes can read books or other
existing literatures and compare how things are done properly. Questions, such as,
Are there other ways to do the same job? Is the other way more economical or
more efficient? and Can we apply it in our system? can help him in determining the
expected roles and responsibilities, required skills and competencies, and work
experiences and knowledge.
C. Is Mang Ceto justified in saying that he cannot do something he knows nothing
about? Why
Looking into Mang Cetos perspective, he is the expert and he knows what
he is doing. Certainly, Mang Ceto would not tell everything to Junel Reyes during the
interview. If Reyes is not telling everything to Mang Ceto, then the latter would also
not tell everything to the former. Mang Ceto needs to keep some things to himself;
things that would keep him an asset to the company or would give the company
reason to retain his services.
On the other hand, Junel Reyes can play the dumb interviewer during the
interaction to somehow make Mang Ceto feel more relaxed and comfortable during
the conversation. It may just be a scheme for Mang Ceto to bring his defenses down
and for Junel Reyes to see right through it.
