DEVI JAGADAMBIKA TEMPLE

INTRODUCTION

Devi Jagadambika temple or Jagadambika temple of a group

of about 25 temples at Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Khajuraho is a World Heritage site.

Build between 950-1050 CE by Chandela Dynasty.

Devi Jagadambika temple, in a group to the north, is one of the

most finely decorated temples at Khajuraho, with numerous

erotic carvings. Three bands of carvings encircle the body of

the temple. In the sanctum is an enormous image of the

goddess Devi. Devi Jagdamba Temple Is A Part Of The

Western Group Of Temples In Khajuraho.

Known For Its Symbolism Of The Trinity, The Temple Is Divided

Into Three Diiferent Bands.


The First Layer Displays Glorious Sculptures Of Brahma, The

Creator, While The Middle Brand Has Carvings Of Lord Shiva,

The Destroyer, The Lower Most And Is Dedicated To Lord

Vishnu, The Sustainer.

The building activity started almost immediately after the rise

of their power, throughout their kingdom.

Most temples were built during the region of the Hindu Kings

Yashovarman and Dhanga.

This temple was built near the Kandriya Mahadevo Temple in

the first century.

The ceiling of the temple is designed just like that of the

kandariya Mahadev Temple.

This temple is adjacent to kandariya Mahadev Temple but

unlike that it is not a Sakta Shrine.


FEATURES
Feature include imaginative renditions of shardulas, mythical

beasts with the body of a lion and the head of parrot, elephant

or boar.

Devi Jagdamba Temple also has a grand and glorious statue of

the goddess of the Universe, Goddess Parvati.

Another striking feature about the temple is the controversial

sculpture of Mithuna or Gemini which depicts the union

between an amorous couple

The temple has an intricately designed pyramidal roof.

It has three shrines designs which make it look like a cross.

The statue of Lord Shiva with three heads and eight armsis the

most famous statue of the god.
