CLASSROOM OBSERVATION FORM

Internship

Teachers Name: Michael Day/Date : Wednesday/ August 9, 2017

Class : 10AHi Subject area : General Mathematics
Lesson hours : 2 sessions (08.15 AM-09.55 AM)

Please write down in detail and describe in a narrative of what happens during the learning takes
place. Write in prose (describing facts) and not just points. Including activities that occur and a
summary of what the teachers and students say.

Teacher opened the class by greeting the students at 08.16 AM. He greeted the students
and then checked whether all the students already in class or not. After that, he distributed the
post test that the students did from the last meeting. He called the students one by one and gave
their results. Then he asked the students, Do you have any questions?. Some students asked
about the questions that they had from the posttest, and the teacher solved it and explained it in
front of the class. He also asked the students to participate in answering those questions. Then,
he explained about the simplest form of exponent to make sure that students knew how far they
could simplify. He reminded the students about the material from last meeting and he asked the
students to take a paper to do the rev test. The teacher wrote the question for rev test on
whiteboard and gave 10 minutes for the students to solve 2 questions. The students collected
their rev test, after that teacher asked the students to answer the questions together. Teacher
continued with the new topic, which is scientific notation. He started to explain why scientific
notation is needed by sharing about some large numbers that usually can be found, like the size
of planet and velocity of light. After he explained, he checked students understanding by asking
whether they had question or not. No one asked about that, and he gave some questions about
exponent that use scientific notation. After waited for a few minutes, the teacher explained how
to get the answer. He also asked the students to participate by answering his question during his
explanation. Then, he dismissed the students to take their break time for 10 minutes. After that,
he started to give some questions to the students about rational and irrational numbers, he did not
explain it directly to the students but he gave examples first.
Draw conclusions based on your observations to the points below, supported by theories that
have been studied:

a. Class management (behavioral and classroom environment)

There were not major and minor behaviors in the class. All students were silent during
the class, they could pay attention well too. One student laid his head on the table in the back,
and the teacher asked him are you sleeping at the back? after that he got up and said no, sir.
The seating arrangement was also easy for the teacher to see all the students during the class.
Teacher also reminded students who did not take notes during his class. It is a must too for the
students to take notes during the class in order to make them understand the material well, rather
than just sit and listen moreover in Math class.

b. Strategies and instructional media

Teacher used direct teaching as his strategy and also question and answer method.
However, teacher also used example at first and it made the students could think critically. He
also made some examples from another subject that is related with the topic. He also gave
another version of question to be solved by the students so that the students could think more.
Teacher used markers and whiteboard in class to help him. He used whiteboard to write down
some important points and explained the steps to get the answer.

c. Interaction in learning
Teacher asked the students whether they understood the materials or not, he explained
again when the students could not understand the materials. He checked the students
understanding and discussed some questions together with all students. The teacher kept on
asking the students whether they had question or not every time he was done with his
explanation. When he explained, the students also could raise their hand and ask the question
directly when they find any difficulties. He also interacted with the students during the class by
asking some question to make sure that all students paid attention to him.

d. Classroom assessment (knowledge, attitudes, skills)

Teacher gave posttest after the sessions were done, the posttest is good after the students
learned about the material because it will help teachers as well to know how far the students
understand material. It can help the teacher as well to know what should be in review for the next
meeting.
