Target Set 1 Simple Harmonic Motion, Waves and Sound

1. I can define simple harmonic motion and identify the basic characteristics (length of
pendulum and gravity) that affect and do NOT affect (mass) the period of a pendulum.

2. I can define frequency and relate it to period(time).

3. I can determine the period and frequency of a pendulum.

4. I can identify and distinguish between contrasting types of waves by discussing the
motion of the particles of the medium through which the wave travels.

5. I can define wave frequency and know that it is determined by the source of the
disturbance.

6. I can define wave speed and know that it is determined by the characteristics of the
medium.

7. I can define wavelength and know that it is determined by both the frequency and
medium.

8. I know the basic characteristics of waves and their definitions.

9. I understand the relationships between period, frequency and wavelength.

10. I can perform simple computational problems which relate frequency, wavelength, and
wave speed using the equation v=f.

11. I can interpret a wave diagram to determine wave characteristics.

12. I can produce an accurate wave diagram using the given wave characteristics.

13. I can recognize that waves can both reflect (bounce back) and transmit (pass through)
at a boundary.

14. I know that waves interfere while passing through each other both constructively and
destructively.

15. I can utilize the principle of superposition to predict the shape and amplitude of a wave
form resulting from the interference of two waves.

16. I can define resonance and know its connection to standing waves.

17. I can identify the nodes and antinodes of a standing wave.

18. I can relate frequency to pitch for a sound wave.

19. I can identify factors affecting (phase of matter and temperature) and not affecting
(frequency and wavelength) the speed of a sound wave.
20. I know how to determine the speed of sound in different situations.

21. Given echo time data, distance, or speed, I can determine the speed of sound or the
distance sound has travelled.

22. I can describe the Doppler Effect and its underlying causes.

23. I can identify the cause and result of resonance and relate this to a musical instrument.

24. I can relate amplitude, sound intensity and relative loudness/volume.
