August Kindergarten News

Topics of the Month

In Math, our first unit will be counting. Students will be required to know how to count to 100 by 10s and 1s and will count to
answer the question How Many? Objects to be counted can be in any of the following arrangements: scattered, straight
line, circular, and rectangular. Find objects at home for students to count such as utensils, coins, etc. You can extend this by
counting by 2s and 5s and talking about odd and even numbers.

In social studies, we will start the year off by talking about how rules are made and why in our First IB unit (Please see IB
Corner). We will also discuss why rules need to be followed. You can have a conversation with your student about what rules
they follow at home, school, and in their community too. Here are some ideas for conversation starters: What rules do you
follow at home? School? Why do you need to wear a helmet while riding a bike? Why do you need to buckle your seat belt?
Before Labor Day, we will also discuss this holiday and why we celebrate it-to honor working men and women.

In Kindergarten, writing consists of using a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing. Students will participate in a mini-
lesson, have an independent writing time, and a sharing time. Students will begin by sounding out words phonetically and
using sight words. In our writing lessons, we will be learning to write about things we know and focusing on getting our ideas
on paper and adding details to words and pictures.

In reading, we will begin our new Units of Study curriculum in which students will have a mini lesson, independent reading
time and are able to share. This is very similar to writing. Students will begin reading emergent reader texts with understanding
while using grade level decoding skills. An important part of reading is comprehension and skills for this will also be taught.
Included in reading is phonics and a read-aloud and shared text that teachers will read every day. Students will be
answering comprehension questions about details from this text too.
