Year 8 - Design and Technology Theory Assignment

Project Design Planning and Construction of

Serving Tray
1. Design/Planning
a) List the essential features that the finished article should have.
Strong enough for intended purpose i.e. to hold food and drink.
Good attractive appearance for domestic dcor.
A durable finish to prevent staining.
Affordable, made from easily obtained and inexpensive material.
Made from renewable/sustainable materials.
Within our level of skills.
Construction time.

b) Material
Options Characteristics
1 Easy to work with,
Good appearance,
Wood (Radiata Pine) Strong,
Requires protective finish to
prevent staining and
weathering.
2 Very strong.
Some metals are extremely
resistant to corrosion e.g.
Metal (Stainless steel, stainless steel.
Aluminum, Steel) Mild steel very corrosive.
Uniform surface (i.e. no knots)
Requires painting to stop
corrosion.
3 Clean material (no surface
finish necessary)
Feels good; holds shape
relatively well.
May be coloured.
Surface unlikely to be damaged
by spilling tray contents;
Plastic (Acrylic) unaffected by water.
Uniform smooth surface (i.e. no
knots etc.)
Strong
Fairly expensive compared to
wood.
Easily recycled.

c) Joining Method
Options Characteristics
1 Fast
Butt joint, nails and glue Fairly strong
Poorer appearance
Simple
Nail holes need covering
2 Rebate Joint and Glue Fast construction but will need
clamping while glue dries, no nail
holes to fill and hide.
3 Rebate Butt Joint and Glue and Fast and easy construction, reasonably
Nails strong

2. Evaluating
a. Suggest four reasons why timber/radiata pine is the most appropriate material for the
frame of this project.

b. Suggest four reasons why tongue and groove V boards are the most appropriate
material for the base of this project.

3. Managing/Procedure
a. List all the steps, in correct order, and the tools used in the construction of the storage
box. Add a column to include a photo of the tools.

4. Resources
a. Name the raw materials used in the manufacture of this project.

b. Calculate the total cost of material to make this project.

Insert a MS Exel Spreadsheet at this point in the document and using the information
from your cutting list calculate the cost of the box.

c. List the sources of energy used directly to make this project.

d. List the sources of energy used to manufacture the material for this project.

5. Environmental Factors
a. Sustainability - Are the materials used in this project environmentally sustainable into
the future? - Explain your answer.

b. List the materials used in this project and discuss how they may be recycled.

6. Quality
a. Does this project have a professional feel and appearance about it? Is it "like a bought
one"?
If not, how could it be improved.
List the areas and suggest improvements.
Include a photo of the finished product at this point in your document.
