Tenants PAC has endorsed candidates in 26 of the 51 races for New York City Council. Some of our
candidates do not have primary opponents in the September 12 Democratic primary, or have only token
opposition.
But several of them are involved in very competitive primaries, and need YOUR help. Elections are
not won with targeted mailings, or with advertising they are won by the grunt work of reaching out to
individual voters, through door knocking, phone banking, street corner visibility, and similar activities,
including Election Day Get Out The Vote efforts.
There are 23 days remaining until the Tuesday, September 12 primary. Please volunteer to help one or
more of the following candidates endorsed by Tenants PAC. If you can give a few hours between now
and September 12, and if you can do GOTV work on September 12 (the polls are open from 6:00 am to
9:00 pm) you will be helping to make sure the new City Council is still pro-tenant.
It is best to get in touch with the campaigns field director before showing up helps them plan.

Tenants PAC has endorsed CARLINA RIVERA, the best by far of some good candidates, running to
replace term-limited Rosie Mendez, who supports her. Carlina grew up in a project-based Section 8
building on the Lower East Side and worked for several years as a tenant organizer. She also has
working knowledge of the City Council and can hit the ground running if she is elected.

There are some very good candidates here, all pro-tenant, running to replace term-limited Daniel
Garodnick. Tenants PAC has endorsed KEITH POWERS, an energetic candidate who in addition to a
background of advocating for tenants, has produced creative, specific ideas to reform city government.

Incumbent BEN KALLOS, one of the most pro-tenant City Council Members, has a primary and
needs our support. In addition to his efforts for stronger rent protections, Ben chairs the Governmental
Operations Committee where he has sought to root out patronage, de-privatize government, eliminate
billions in waste, expand elections, and to use technology to improve access to government.

Incumbent HELEN ROSENTHAL, who has been staunchly pro-tenant and was the first City Council
member we endorsed this year, is being challenged by Mel Wymore, who is running an ugly campaign,
falsely accusing Helen of being weak in opposing overdevelopment. Helen needs our help.

Incumbent MARK LEVINE has been a true friend of tenants; among other accomplishments, he
recently won enactment of the Right to Counsel law that will guarantee that low-income tenants have a
lawyer in eviction proceedings. His primary opponent is Thomas Lopez-Pierre, a racist, anti-Semitic
homophobe running on a platform of protecting black and Hispanic tenants from Jewish landlords,
and falsely claiming that Mark has sold out tenants for landlord money. Mark needs our help.

Tenants PAC has endorsed DIANA AYALA, former deputy Chief of Staff to City Council Speaker
Melissa Mark-Viverito, who is term-limited and supports Diana Ayala to replace her. Diana is a genuine
grass roots leader who has served her community well. She is running against Robert Rodriguez, a
member of the New York State Assembly who says he wants the higher City Council salary and an
easier commute. Yes, Robert, the trip to Albany can be boring, but that is not a rationale for serving in
the City Council.

Tenants PAC has endorsed incumbent BILL PERKINS who has two formidable challengers, Cordell
Cleare and Marvin Holland. Bill has been a tireless advocate for tenants and for the preservation of our
threatened affordable housing, and needs our support.

This is an open seat currently held by the term-limited James Vacca. In a three-candidate
race, MARJORIE VELAZQUEZ has earned Tenants PACs support with her record of community
service and her clear grasp of and commitment to tenant issues. One of her opponents is Mark Gjonaj, a
member of the State Assembly who is also a landlord and who has a pro-landlord voting record in
Albany; Gjonaj is one of very few Democratic Assembly members who has consistently voted against
the bill to repeal Vacancy Deregulation. Marjorie Velazquez will give tenants the representation we
need at City Hall.

Tenants PAC is supporting RANDY ABREU, who is challenging right-wing incumbent Fernando
Cabrera. A fundamentalist preacher, Cabrera recently gave a sermon in which he stated that it is more
difficult to be rich than to be poor. He is a major homophobe who also refuses to support womens
rights, and has a ton of landlord money in his campaign coffers. Randy Abreu is a progressive
community activist who will be a breath of fresh air on the City Council.

In a four-way race for this open seat (now held by term-limited Annabel Palma), one candidate stands
out: ELVIN GARCIA. One of his opponents is State Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr., who opposes all
legislation to protect queer people, and who is stridently opposed to a womans right to determine her
own health care. Elvin Garcia is a lifelong resident of the district who has an impressive record of
community service, and a strong commitment to tenants rights.

This is a two-way race for an open seat, created when incumbent Julissa Ferreras-Copeland announced
that she would not seek re-election. The candidates are Assembly Member Francisco Moya, who has
been consistent in supporting stronger rent protection laws, and disgraced former state senator Hiram
Monserrate, who was expelled from the senate after brutalizing his girlfriend and later served two years
in prison for stealing public funds. Tenants PAC strongly supports FRANCISCO MOYA.

This is an open seat, created on July 20 when incumbent Ruben Wills was convicted of corruption,
resulting in his automatic expulsion from the City Council. There are two superior women candidates
in this race. The Tenants PAC board voted to endorse HETTIE POWELL, a shareholder at Rochdale
Village and a lawyer with a long history of activism and community service.

community center into Circle 5. Campaign office is located on the ground floor of Building 19. Enter
through the side entrance by the campaign banner.)
Incumbent ANTONIO REYNOSO, a great friend of tenants on the City Council, has a primary
challenge and needs our support.

Daniel Merwin, Field Director

Tenants PAC strongly supports EDE FOX, who is challenging incumbent Laurie Cumbo. Ms. Cumbo
has been weak in opposing inappropriate development, and her very late opposition to the mayors
proposal to develop the Bedford Union Armory site as a mix of luxury and affordable housing has left
many of her constituents suspicious of her sincerity. Ede Fox stands with the community residents who
are demanding that the Armory be 100 percent affordable housing after all, this is city-owned land,
not owned by a private developer who can decide on its use.

years ago, and Assembly Member Felix Ortiz. Carlos needs our help.

In race with four strong candidates vying to replace term-limited Vincent Gentile, Tenants PAC
enthusiastically supports Rev. KHADER EL-YATEEM, a Lutheran minister who emigrated to
Brooklyn 22 years ago from Bethlehem, where he was born. He brings enormous energy and creativity,
plus a strong progressive platform to the campaign.
