Section 1 Introduction
Description The Poet IQ2 8500Q agent gas monitor measures real time
concentrations of anesthetic agent gases. The device measures
gases using a sidestream method. The primary module measures
concentrations of CO2, N2O, and five halogenated anesthetic agents.
The device can also measure oxygen concentrations using a galvanic
cell.

Intended Use The Poet IQ2 8500Q monitor is an anesthetic agent gas monitor. The
8500Q monitor monitors physiological parameters of patients within
clinical care settings. The 8500Q monitor is intended to monitor
concentrations of halothane, enflurane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, and
desflurane during anesthetic surgery.

The user is responsible for the interpretation of the monitored data

that is made available. It is intended that the user is a professional
health care provider. Physiological data, system alarms, and patient
data analysis are available to the care provider from the monitor.

Poet IQ2 8500Q The Poet IQ2 8500Q monitor comes standard with 5 agent gas
Features analysis, CO2, N2O, and O2 monitoring. A color TFT screen with a
three waveform display is standard on all Poet IQ2 8500Q models.

Integrated The primary hardware module of the 8500Q monitor is an integrated

CO2 and Agent CO2/agent detector (bench). The integrated detector measures
carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), and five halogenated
Gas Detector anesthetic agent gases using the same sample collection path and
testing apparatus. The analyzer uses proprietary High IQ
technology to identify and quantify agent gases. There are no moving
parts, reducing size of the detector and enhancing reliability.

The 8500Q monitor uses the sidestream method of measuring CO2

and anesthetic agent gases. Gas is drawn through a nasal cannula or
endotracheal adapter. The gas sample enters the monitor from a
sampling tube into a water trap, which removes water vapor and
particulate matter from the gas sample. The gas then enters the CO2
(agent) detector where it is analyzed.

Capnometry The agent gas monitor measures CO2 concentrations and sends data
(Measurement of CO2) suitable for continuous waveform display. The monitor also detects
end-tidal and fractional Inspired CO2 levels, sending the data to the
monitor where it is displayed numerically. End-tidal CO2 (ETCO2) is
defined as the maximum CO2 concentration at the end of expiration.
The monitor measures the CO2 concentration and the monitor
displays the numerical value. The ETCO2 value is updated
continuously with each breath cycle. The amount of CO2 in the gas
mixture inhaled by the patient is the fractional Inspired CO2 (FICO2).

Criticare Systems, Inc. Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Page 1-1
Section 1 Introduction

The monitor measures CO2 using the principles of infrared

absorption spectrometry. An unknown concentration of gas (CO2) is
calculated by comparing its absorption of infrared light to that of a
known standard. The absorption of light is directly related to the
concentration of the gas. As infrared light passes through the sample
gas chamber, the light transmitted is converted to a voltage signal.
The monitor converts the voltage into CO2 concentration data that
can be expressed numerically or as waveforms by the monitor. The
Beer's Law calculation is performed by the software of the Poet IQ2
8500Q agent gas monitor.

Infrared analysis of the gas samples is done using Beers Law. The
formula for Beers Law is as follows:

I = I0 e ( ) cd
I Infrared value of measured sample.

I0 Infrared value of light source.

e Exponential function.
( ) Extinction coefficient.

c Concentration of the gas sample

d Distance measured through the sample

Agent Gas Measurement The agent detector samples gas breathed by the patient through a
sidestream circuit. It measures the concentrations of CO2, N2O, and
halogenated anesthetic agents in the sampled gas. The detector
uses far-infrared measurements to identify concentrations of
Halothane, Enflurane, Isoflurane, Sevoflurane, and Desflurane
anesthetic agents and their mixtures.

The monitor uses the principles of infrared absorption spectrometry

to measure anesthetic gases in the same manner as explained for
CO2 measurement. The integrated detector determines the
concentrations of anesthetic gases and CO2 by measuring the optical
absorption of the sampled patient gas at a number of specific
wavelengths in the medium to long-wave infrared region.

Conditions of Use The 8500Q monitor has been calibrated with dry NIST-traceable
calibration gases at room temperature and pressure (~ 21C, 740
mmHg). Given the small effect of water vapor on agent gas and CO2
measurements and the systems built-in temperature and pressure
measurements and compensations, this method of gas analysis per
EN 864 is best described as ATPS (Ambient Temperature and
Pressure, Saturated; 21C, 750mmHg, 100% Humidity Saturated).

The 8500Q monitor is suitable for sustained pressure (breathing

circuit) monitoring environments and has been tested per Clause 102
(Sustained Pressure) of EN 864.

Page 1-2 Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Criticare Systems, Inc.
Section 1 Introduction

Stability of Accuracy The 8500Q monitor has an internal barometer and thermistor that
allow compensation for changes over a range of temperature and
atmospheric pressures. The analyzer complies with EN 864 and
EN12598 standards for cyclical pressure.

Agent Accuracy of The accuracy of a single agent measurement is defined by the

Measurement formula,
m ( 0.04m + 0.1 ) x m + (0.04 m + 0.1 )

where m is equal to the measurement in percent and x is the

tolerance range.

Example of 5% HAL measurement, calculating the high limit of the

tolerance range.

(5% HAL 0.04Reading) + 0.1%Absolute = 0.3%

5% HAL + 0.3%Tolerance = 5.3%

Final tolerance range is 4.7% to 5.3% HAL.

Measuring The 8500Q monitor uses the sidestream method of measuring O2.
Oxygen (O 2 ) The gas is sampled from the same gas intake system used in CO2
monitoring. The water trap removes moisture and particulate matter
from the gas samples.

Method The gas sample is measured using an reactive oxygen cell. The
oxygen sensor is a galvanic electrochemical cell that works by a
process known as oxidation reduction.

Oxygen from the air comes in contact with a highly reactive metal,
reacts with the metal and produces a current. As the oxygen reacts,
this reactive metal is gradually being used up. Once the metal is used
up, the cell is depleted and can no longer sense oxygen.

The cell generates a voltage output proportional to the amount of

oxygen in the sampled gas. This oxygen cell has an internal
thermistor and circuitry that adjusts the output voltage based on
current temperature of the cell.

The voltage is read by the microprocessor and an O2 measurement is

generated using predictive circuitry. This predictive function
enhances response time of the O2 monitoring module.

Criticare Systems, Inc. Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Page 1-3
Section 1 Introduction

The relationship between gas concentration and pressure is

calculated by the microprocessor. The numerical value displayed by
the monitor (O2 Calculated) is generated using the following formula.
20.9 PC
O 2 Calculated = O 2 Measured ------------------------------ ------
O 2Ambient P 0

The measured O2 predictive value is multiplied by a fixed value

derived from room pressure divided by room ambient oxygen levels.
The measurement is further adjusted by multiplying the ratio of the
pressure determined at calibration (PC) with the current pressure
(P0).

There is a negligible effect on O2 measurements due to humidity.

Conditions of Use The O2 function is appropriate for measuring respiratory O2

concentrations in all patient populations. The O2 monitor is suitable
for use in breathing systems and with the use of inhalation anesthetic
agents.

Stability of Accuracy The oxygen cell contains temperature correction circuitry. The oxygen
sensor temperature is maintained at a nominal 40 Celsius to
maintain a consistent performance.

Section 3 Theory of Operations
Overview This document describes the operation of Criticares Poet IQ2
8500Q agent gas monitor. The 8500Q monitor has an Integrated
Bench (IBench) which measures concentrations of anesthetic gases.

The IBench is a self contained module which requires only a power

supply and a sidestream connection to the patient anesthetic circuit.
The Integrated Bench samples gas being breathed by the patient
through the sidestream circuit. It measures the concentrations of
CO2, N2O, and halogenated anesthetic agents in the sampled gas. A
galvanic or paramagnetic O2 sensor connected to the IBench
measures O2 concentration which the IBench delivers with the other
gas readings.

The IBench determines the concentrations of anesthetic gas and CO2

by measuring the optical absorption of the sampled patient gas at a
number of specific wavelengths in the medium to long-wave IR
region. The number and placement of the sampling wavelengths
enables the IBench to measure concentrations of individual gases in
any anesthetic gas mixture.

To measure IR absorption on a number of bands, the radiation from a

pulsed thin-film IR source is directed through the patient gas and onto
a number of thin-film optical filters, one at each wavelength.
Pyroelectric detectors measure the IR radiation passing through to
the back of each filter. The detector output signals taken together
indicate the concentration of anesthetic gas. The bench has no
moving parts and therefore avoids long-term random and systematic
errors which can occur in a conventional spectrometer due to the
run-in wear and resultant play between optical parts.

The IBench contains a complete pneumatic system. It requires

connection to a Criticare water trap.

IR Bench Refer to Figure 3-1: Detector Diagram

Figure 3-1: Detector Diagram

The thin-film IR source (1) is pulsed (at 13.5Hz) under control of the
module microprocessor (MPU). It shines through the patient gas
sample cell (2) and onto an array of eight narrow-band thin-film IR
filters (3). So that each filter passes the correct wavelength (below)
they are aligned such that the normal from the centre of each filter
points to the center of the IR source.

Behind each filter is a light pipe (5) whose inner surface is reflective.
The light pipe gathers the radiation which passes through the filter
and directs it down to a pyroelectric detector (6) mounted in the
aluminum detector block (7).

Each pyroelectric detector converts the incident radiation from the IR

source into an AC signal. These signals are amplified by
transimpedance amplifiers (8) and are digitized by MPU (9). The
MPU demodulates the signals to the IR source drive waveform. The
resulting modulation envelopes are processed to derive the
concentrations of absorbing gases in the sample cell.

Pyroelectric Detectors A pyroelectric detector is a thin plate of pyroelectric material which

produces a displacement of electrical charge as it heats or cools. The
IR source is pulsed (at 13.5Hz) and so the IR radiation incident on the
detector varies at that rate. The resulting temperature fluctuation of
the detector gives rise to an electrical signal at the IR source
modulation rate. Because the temperature fluctuations are minute
(typically 10-5C) the thermal dynamics of the detector are first order
and the output signal (at 13.5Hz) is proportional to the fluctuation in
the incident IR radiation.

The detectors are sensitive to rate of change of temperature. To

prevent external temperature fluctuations from producing noise (on
the detectors) they are embedded in an aluminium block which is in
turn enclosed in a foam boot. This combination of thermal mass and
insulation provides a quiet thermal environment.

Page 3-2 Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Criticare Systems, Inc.
Section 3 Theory of Operations

Optical Filters: Each filter consists of multiple (5 - 40) refracting layers laid on a
Filter Heater silicon or germanium substrate. The layers give each filter a
band-pass characteristic with a half band of 0.1 - 0.3% (of
wavelength). Of the eight optical filters, one is specific to CO2 in that
CO2 absorbs at its wavelength and N2O and agents do not. Another is
specific to N2O. Five are specific to the halogenated agents
(Halothane, Isoflurane, Enflurane, Desflurane, and Sevoflurane);
each of these agents has absorptions at more than one of the five
wavelengths but CO2 and N2O doesnt absorb at any of the five. None
of the gases absorbs at the wavelength of the eighth filter; this (Ref)
is used in deriving absorption ratios on the other (measurement)
channels relative to no absorption on each channel.

For a given IR modulation frequency the resulting signal at each

detector is the convolution of the IR source output, sample gas
absorption, and optical filter gain wrt to frequency, i.e.:

I = Go * ko * (IR(l) * filter_gain(l, Tfilt) * gas_absorption(l) ) dl

where:
I = AC current from the detector
G0 = optical path gain

In the absence of any absorption, the proportion of radiated power

emitted by the IR source which would fall on the detector.
k0 = pyroelectric detector gain

Electrical charge out vs. integral of incident optical power.

IR = AC radiated power from IR source.

Thin-film IR filters are temperature-sensitive; expansion and

contraction changes the thickness of the refracting layers and this
causes both the centre frequency and bandwidth of a narrow-band
filter to shift. When convolved with the IR absorption spectrum of a
gas, the resulting output signal to the detector changes with the
temperature. In the extreme where gases have overlapping spectra, a
filter set is not able to discriminate between gases in a mixture. To
avoid this problem, the filters in the IBench are maintained at a
constant temperature by a heater (4) embedded in the bench next to
the filters. The heater is a metal strip which touches the filters. The
strip is maintained at 50C. The strip, the filter, and plastic in the
immediate vicinity form a compact lightweight thermal assembly that
can be brought to operating temperature in under one minute. This
enables the IBench to deliver full-accuracy gas concentrations shortly
after startup.

Criticare Systems, Inc. Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Page 3-3
Section 3 Theory of Operations

Gas Calibration To track the optical gain of each channel with time it is necessary to
periodically measure the output from each channel in the absence of
absorbing gases. To do this measurement the gas sample cell is
quickly flushed with scrubbed room air (see Pneumatics on page 3-
7) and the output from each channel read while the air is still at room
pressure.

Deriving Gas For each absorbing gas that a given optical channel is sensitive to,
Concentrations the output signal (A) from the channel is related to the concentration
of the gas (c) in the sample cell by:

A = A0 exp (- lc)

where A0 is the signal with no absorbing gas and l is the absorption

coefficient. For multiple absorbing gases the output is the product of
the absorptions of the individual gases.

A = A0 Pi (exp (- lici)) A = A0 exp (- i lici)

The IBench derives gas concentrations from optical signals by

applying the inverse of the transformation above. For multiple gases
absorbing over multiple optical channels:

Cr[] = G2[] * ln( G1[] * Av[] )

where:

G1[] = G0[] * (1 / A0[] )

and:

G2[] = Ml-1

where:

Cr[] gas concentrations in the sample cell.

Av[] optical signal amplitudes in the presence of absorbing

gas.

A0[] optical signal amplitudes with no absorbing gas.

G0[] optical channel gain matrix (8 x 8).

Ml[] matrix (7 x 7) of gas absorption coefficients over optical

channels.

Page 3-4 Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Criticare Systems, Inc.
Section 3 Theory of Operations

Ml[] depends on the convolution of the gas spectra and the filter
spectra. The filter spectra are temperature-dependent (see Optical
Filters: Filter Heater on page 3-3) and so, if filter temperatures
change, a different Ml[] is required to discriminate between gases. To
avoid this the Integrated Bench maintains the filter at a constant
temperature (see Optical Filters: Filter Heater on page 3-3).

The sample cell is under suction, so the pressure in the cell is less
than room pressure. The absolute concentrations measured by the
spectrometer must be converted into relative concentrations.

Cc[] = (Proom / Pcell) * (Tcell / Troom) * Cr[]

To derive absorbing gas concentrations in the gas sampled from the

patient circuit, the module must know A0[], the optical signals which
would be present if no absorbing gases were in the cell. A0[] is the
product of:

A0[] = k * Gbench[] * Gdetector[](Tdet) * PIR[](l, TIR) *

Gfilter[](l, Tfilt) dl

where:

Gbench[] = geometry dependent optical power gain; from IR

source to each detector.

Gdetector[] = gain of pyroelectric detectors and amplifiers.

PIR = IR source output; a function of wavelength (l) and

equivalent black body `temperature (TIR) of the
pulsed source.

Gfilter = Optical filter, transmission per unit wavenumber, a

function of wavelength `and filter temperature (Tfilt).

Gbench[] is set when the bench is assembled and doesnt change

over its lifetime. However other terms are temperature-dependent and
may change as the bench warms up and/or the temperature of its
operating environment changes. While the bench is sampling patient
gas it estimates A0[] by periodically executing Gas cals (see
Pneumatics on page 3-7). Each cal provides a direct reading of
A0[]; the value of A0[] at any time afterwards is obtained by
extrapolation from the most recent cals.

Criticare Systems, Inc. Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Page 3-5
Section 3 Theory of Operations

While a succession of gas cals provides a running estimate of A0[],

the error in that estimate is reduced if the actual A0[] drifts as little as
possible. To maintain accuracy of the gas matrix G2[] the optical
filters are maintained at a fixed temperature (see Optical Filters:
Filter Heater on page 3-3). This eliminates drift in Gfilter[]. In
addition, because the pyroelectric detectors and amplifiers are
embedded in an aluminum block which is insulated from ambient air,
they can heat or cool only very slowly and therefore drift of
Gdetector[]between Gas Cal. intervals is low.

The output of the IR source changes as it warms and once warmed

up, will change if the temperature of the device case changes. So, like
the detectors, the IR source is embedded in an aluminum block which
limits the rate at which its output can be affected by changes in
ambient temperature. That apart, the output from the IR source
changes in a predictable manner as is warms up. This known
warm-up is factored into the estimates of A0[].

Pneumatics Refer to Figure 3-2: 8500Q Pneumatics.

1
2

Figure 3-2: 8500Q Pneumatics

The Integrated Bench contains a complete pneumatic system. With

the module installed it is connected to a gas sample line (1) and
water trap (2) on the inlet side and a scavenge port (3) on the outlet
side. The system can sample patient gas at 100, 150, or 200 ml/
minute.

Criticare Systems, Inc. Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Page 3-7
Section 3 Theory of Operations

Sampling Patient Gas When sampling patient gas, a pump (4) sucks gas through the
sample line. The gas flow splits at the water trap, with approximately
80% going through the gas sample cell (5) via the cal valve (V1) and
then through the O2 cell (6). The remaining 20% of flow passes
through the trap reservoir and restrictor (R2).

A hydrophobic filter in the water trap (7) prevents any fluid sucked
down the sample line from going down the sample side. The trap-side
flow sucks this fluid into the trap reservoir (8).

An air bleed via (R3) adds to the airflow into the pump. This extra
airflow enables the pump to pull as little as 100ml/min from the
sample line and still rotate at an adequate speed.

If the pneumatics are off but the bench is still connected to a patient
circuit, check valve (Chk3) prevents a positive pressure at the patient
circuit from forcing patient gas out the bleed and into room air.

Absolute pressure sensor (SENS1) measures the pressure at the gas

sample cell. Since the gas sample cell is under suction the absolute
gas concentrations measured in it is lower than if that same
absorbing gas mixture were at room pressure. The sensor reading is
used to scale the cell reading to room pressure.

Differential pressure sensor (SENS2) across restrictor (R1) provides

a measure of the flow through the sample side of the pneumatic
circuit; this flow is servoed so that the overall flow down the sample
line equals the current setting (100/150/200 ml/min).

As the diaphragm of the pump reciprocates the air pressure upline of

the pump rises and falls. The series of restrictors and reservoir
(C1,R1,C2,R4,C3) between the pump and the gas sample cell filters
out these pressure fluctuations so that pressure at the cell is steady.

C4 provides an outlet volume for the pump to work into. C4 and R5

together muffle the output of the pump for quiet operation.

If the pneumatics are off but the IBench is connected to patient

circuit, check valves (Chk1, Chk2) prevent air from being sucked into
the patient circuit via the bench.

Clearing Occlusion If the sample line becomes occluded, the pressure sensed by
(SENS1) falls. A minor occlusion is sucked quickly into the water trap
and the pressure at (SENS1) returns to normal. However if the
pressure drop persists, indicating a large occlusion, then a bypass
valve (V2) is opened and the pump is driven at high speed to quickly
suck the fluid from the sample line into the trap reservoir (8).

Once the trap is full an occlusion appears which cannot be cleared, a

TRAP FULL alarm displays.

Page 3-8 Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Criticare Systems, Inc.
Section 3 Theory of Operations

Gas Cal To do a Gas Cal (see Bench - above), the cal valve (V1) is switched
and the pump runs fast. This flushes the sample cell with room air
pulled through a scrubber (9). The pump is then stopped. The sample
cell is connected to room air through the cal valve and is at room
pressure. The outputs of the IR bench, the O2 sensor and the
absolute pressure sensor are measured. The cal valve is then
switched back to the gas sample line and the pump is revved to bring
sample gas back into the cell. This cycle takes three seconds.

While a cal is in progress check valve (Chk2) prevents a positive

pressure from the patient circuit from forcing sample gas into the O2
cell and sample cell via the bypass circuit (R2) and C1, R1.

Figure 3-3: 8500Q Hardware

The Bench consists of four main assemblies (see Figure 3-3: 8500Q
Hardware):
A An MPU (microprocessor),
B A power supply,
C Detector Amplifiers (pyroelectric detectors), and
D Electronic sensors.

These assemblies are described in the following pages.

Page 3-10 Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Criticare Systems, Inc.
Section 3 Theory of Operations

MPU A single MPU (microprocessor) controls and operates the IBench and
interfaces to the Host. The MPU does the following.
Drives the IR source and synchronously samples the resulting
optical signals from the detectors.
Drives the optical filter heater and servo the drive level to
maintain the filter temperature (at 50C).
When sampling patient gas, reads the flow rate and servos the
pump drive to maintain the sample flow at 100/150/200 ml/
minute.
Derives gas inspired and end-tidal concentrations from the
optical signals.
Performs gas cals to maintain the accuracy of the instrument
while running.
Detects and clears sample line occlusion.
Interfaces to the Host monitor via a serial TTL link.
Implements a safety system which ensures that the Module
does not deliver erroneous reading to the Host or operates the
pneumatics in a way which compromises the patient.

The MPU contains Flash EPROM which contains code and has a
section for factory calibrations. The code may be updated via the
Host Interface so that a complete encased gas bench does not have
to be disassembled to upgrade the code.

User configurations are stored in an EEPROM and may be modified

via the Host Interface.

Power Supply The power supply provides separate, protected power rails for the
following principal electrical subsystems:
Digital (MPU, RAM etc.), +5V
IR bench, pyroelectric detector amplifiers (6V)
Pump and valves (+6.5V)
IR source and heater strip (+2.5V)
Pressure and flow sensors (+5V clean)

The power supply uses a single step converter to efficiently deliver

these powers. This enables the device to use only 3 watts while
running from a typical instrument supply voltages (10 - 28VDC).

A module-on-off control line at the Host Interface enables the Host to

power down the module. When powered down the module uses less
than 1mA.

Criticare Systems, Inc. Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Page 3-11
Section 3 Theory of Operations

Detector Amplifiers The pyroelectric detectors used in the Integrated Bench appear as
capacitors (30 - 60pF). The AC signal from each detector is in the
range 200fA - 1pA p-p. The detector signals are amplified by
transimpedance amplifiers with gains of 1012 - 1013S. Amplifier
noise floors are approximately 0.3fA/0Hz. This high-impedance low
noise circuitry mounted directly by the detectors under the aluminium
detector block and is isolated from external electric fields by a metal
shield.

The amplifiers have a passband of 8 - 16Hz. Their output signal are

digitized by an A/D converter inside the shield. The sampling is
controlled by the MPU and is synchronous with the IR source drive
(also controlled by the MPU). This amplitude of the IR modulation on
each channel is extracted digitally (by the MPU).

Sensors Apart from the IR detectors themselves, there are a a number of

electronic sensors which are read by the MPU to control the bench
and the pneumatics:
The flow sensor measures the flow through the sample cell;
used to control the patient sample flow.
The absolute pressure sensor mounted next to the sample cell
enables the MPU to convert absolute gas concentrations
measured in the cell to relative concentrations (vol%) at room
pressure.
An ambient temperature sensor on the Main Board is used to
ensure that the ambient conditions under which the IBench is
operating are within the allowable range.
A detector temperature sensor mounted on the Detector Board
behind the aluminium detector block is used to ensure that the
detector block is not changing temperature too rapidly.
An optical filter temperature is determined by measuring the
resistance of the optical filter heater strip in a resistance bridge.

Page 3-12 Poet IQ2 8500Q Service Manual Criticare Systems, Inc.
Section 3 Theory of Operations

O2 Theory of Operation The O2 Board utilizes an oxygen sensor that generates a voltage
output that is proportional to the amount of oxygen in the sampled
gas. The oxygen sensor is a galvanic electrochemical device that
works by a process known as oxidation reduction. Oxygen from the
air comes in contact with a highly reactive metal, reacts with the
metal, and produces a current. As the oxygen reacts, this reactive
metal is gradually being used up. Once the metal is used up, the cell
is depleted and can no longer sense oxygen. The oxygen cell
contains temperature correction circuitry.

The millivolt signal and slow response time from the oxygen sensor is
electronically amplified before the microprocessor processes and
displays it. The response time of the oxygen cell is electronically
processed to increase the response time.

Correction for temperature and pressure effects on the O2 sample is

implemented to maintain accuracy over a wide temperature and
atmospheric pressure range. The oxygen sensor temperature is
maintained at a nominal 40 degrees Celsius to maintain a consistent
performance.

electrical circuits and should only be attempted by experienced
electrical or biomedical technicians.
When a monitor is altered through repair or hardware
adjustment, you should fully test it before use.

! CAUTION !

Always follow ESD precautions when you perform any

procedure discussed in this section.
The manufacturer recommends that a serviced monitor be
allowed to run for 24 hours before you place the monitor back
into operation.
Modules and PCBs that have been repaired may require more
extensive testing than what is described in this manual.

The pre-assembly testing of printed circuit boards (PCBs) is not

covered in this manual. Disassembly of surface mounted components
on PCBs is not recommended. Tests provided here are only for the
identification of damaged or degraded PCBs.

Performance Tests

Power Supply 1. Connect a power supply and set it for 13.2VDC +0.2V and an
Performance ammeter inline at J10 of the Main Board (pn 91371A001), verify
that the quiescent current is less than 1mA.
2. Turn the unit on and verify that the "ON current" is less than
1100mA. Measure current @ J10.

Low Battery 1. Connect a battery cable to J10. Connect a voltmeter at the end
of the battery leads. Attach the other end to a power supply with
12.5VDC. Turn on the unit and verify that the GREEN BATTERY
ICON is present.
2. Lower the voltage with the adjustment of the power supply, until
a YELLOW BATTERY ICON appears. The yellow icon should
appear in a range of 12.0 (0.2VDC).
3. Lower the voltage with the adjustment of the power supply, until
a BLACK BATTERY ICON appears. The black icon should
appear in a range of 11.8 (0.2VDC).
4. Continue to decrease the voltage and verify that the unit shuts
down at 11.0VDC (0.3VDC).

Charging Circuit 1. Connect the battery simulator to the Main Board at J10. With
S1, S2, and S3 open, apply AC power to the charging circuit.
The LED should blink and then become steady.
2. Verify that the AC light is illuminated on the front membrane.
3. Close S1. The charger applies current at about 138ma for 9
minutes. The result should be less than 0.025VDC across R85
on the Main Board for the next nine minutes.
4. After 9 minutes, the charging rate should go to about 1.1a. The
result should be 0.20VDC (0.040VDC) measured across R85.
5. Close S2. This should end the fast charge mode after 45
seconds. Verify that the green LED is now on. The current falls
back to 138ma and the result is < 0.025VDC across R85.
6. Close S3. This simulates a high temperature condition and the
charger drops down to trickle charge rate of 5ma. The voltage
should now be 0.8mVDC (0.2mV) across R85.

Hi-Pot and Yearly Tests After completing these tests, perform the annual Hi-Pot, Voltage, and
performance tests found at Electrical Leakage and Voltage Testing
on page 5-12 and Functional Tests on page 5-14.
