CHAPTER 4
IDENTITIES
An Identity is a statement which is true for all values of the unknowns.
The symbol is used to denote an algebraic identity.

The important identities are as follows:-

1. (a+b)2 a2+2ab+b2

2. (ab)2 a22ab+b2

3. (a+b)(ab) a2b2

4. (x+a)(x+b) x2+(a+b)x+ab

5. (x+a)(x+b)(x+c) x3+(a+b+c)x2+(ab+bc+ca)x+abc

6. (a+b+c)2 a2+b2+c2+2ab+2bc+2ca

7. (a+b)3 a3+b3+3ab(a+b)

8. (ab)3a3b33ab(ab)

9. (a3+b3) (a+b)(a2ab+b2)

10. (a3b3) (ab)(a2+ab+b2)

11. (a+b)2+(ab)22(a2+b2)

12. (a+b)2(ab)2 4ab

13. a3+b3+c33abc(a+b+c)(a2+b2+c2abbcca)

14. (a+b)2=(ab)2+4ab

Example1

Expansion of identities of the form (a+b)2 and (ab)2


a) (x+6)2
Solution:- (a+b)2=a2+2ab+b2
Substituting a=x, b=6
(x+6)2 =x2+2(x) (6) +62
(x+6)2=x2+12x+36

b) (4x+5y)2
Solution:- (a+b)2= a2+2ab+b2
Substituting a= 4x, b=5y
(4x+5y)2=(4x)2+2(4x)(5y)+(5y)2
(4x+5y)2=16x2+40xy+25y2

c)(x6)2
Solution:- (ab)2 = a22ab+b2
Substituting a=x, b=6
(x6)2=x22(x)(6)+62
(x6)2=x212x+36

d) (5a4b)2
Solution:- (ab)2 = a22ab+b2
Substituting a=5a, b=4b
(5a4b)2=(5a)22(5a)(4b)+(4b)2
(5a4b)2=25a240ab+16b2

Example 2
Factorise using the Identity a2b2 = (a+b)(ab)
a)x29
Solution:- a2b2 =(a+b)(ab)
x29 =x232=(x+3)(x3)

b) 4x225y2
Solution:- a2b2 =(a+b)(ab)
4x225y2 = (2x)2(5y)2=(2x+5y)(2x5y)

Example 3
Find the product of the following using the identity (x+a)(x+b)= x2+(a+b)x+ab
a)(y+3)(y+5)
(x+a)(x+b)=x2+(a+b)x+ab
Here x=y, a=3, b=5
(y+3)(y+5)=y2+(3+5)x+(3)(5) [Substituting]
=y2+8x+15

b)(x7)(x5)
(x+a)(x+b)= x2+(a+b)x+ab
Here x=x, a=7, b=5
(x7)(x5)=x2+(75)x+(7)(5) [Substituting]
=x212x+35

Example 4
Find the product of the following using the identity
(x+a)(x+b)(x+c)= x3+(a+b+c)x2+(ab+bc+ca)x+abc

a)(x+1)(x+2)(x+3)
Solution:- (x+a)(x+b)(x+c)= x3+(a+b+c)x2+(ab+bc+ca)x+abc
Here x=x, a=1, b=2, c=3
= x3+(1+2+3)x2+(1.2+2.3+3.1)x+(1)(2)(3) [Substituting]
=x3+6x2+(2+6+3)x+6
=x3+6x2+11x+6

b)(3m2)(3m+1)(3m4)
Solution:- (x+a)(x+b)(x+c)= x3+(a+b+c)x2+(ab+bc+ca)x+abc
Here x=3m, a=2, b=1, c=4
(3m2)(3m+1)(3m4) [Substituting]
=(3m)3+(2+14)(3m)2+{(2) (1) +(1)(4)+(4)(2)} 3m+(2)(1)(4)
=27m3+(5)9m2+(24+8)3m+8
=27m345m2+6m+8

Example 5
Expand the following using the Identity (a+b+c)2 = a2+b2+c2+2ab+2bc+2ca
a) (a+2b+3c)2
(a+b+c)2=a2+b2+c2+2ab+2bc+2ca
Here a=a, b=2b, c=3c
(a+2b+3c)2=a2+(2b)2+(3c)2+2(a)(2b)+2(2b)(3c)+2(3c)a [Substituting]
=a2+4b2+9c2+4ab+12bc+6ca

b) (2x5y+9)2
(a+b+c)2 = a2+b2+c2+2ab+2bc+2ca
Here a=2x, b=5y, c=9
(2x5y+9)2=(2x)2+(5y)2+(9)2+2(2x)(5y)+2(5y)(9)+2(9)(2x) [Substituting]
` =4x2+25y2+8120xy90y+36x

Example 6
Find the cube of the following using suitable Identities.
a)(a+3b)
(a+3b)3
Solution:- (a+b)3= a3+b3+3ab(a+b)
Here a=a, b=3b
(a+3b)3=a3+(3b)3+3a(3b)(a+3b) [Substituting]
=a3+27b3+9ab(a+3b)
=a3+27b3+9a2b+27ab2
b)(2x5y)
(2x5y)3
Solution:- (ab)3=a3b33ab(ab)
Here a=2x, b=5y
(2x5y)3=(2x)3(5y)33(2x)(5y)(2x5y) [Substituting]
=8x3125y330xy (2x5y)
=8x3125y360x2y+150xy2

Example 7
Factorise using the suitable identities

a)x3+27
Solution: (a3+b3) =(a+b)(a2ab+b2)
Here a=x, b=3
x3+(3)3= (x+3)[x2(x)(3)+32] [Substituting]
x3+27=(x+3)(x23x+9)

b)p3+8q3
Solution: (a3+b3) =(a+b)(a2ab+b2)
Here a=p, b=2q
P3+(2q)3=(p+2q)(p2p(2q)+(2q)2) [Substituting]
P3+8q3=(p+2q)(p22pq+4q2)

c)a3125b3
Solution: (a3b3) =(ab)(a2+ab+b2)
Here a=a, b=5b
a3(5b)3=(a5b)[a2+(a)(5b)+(5b)2] [Substituting]
a3125b3=(a5b)(a2+5ab+25b2)

d)x38y3
Solution: (a3b3) =(ab)(a2+ab+b2)
Here a=x, b=2y
x3(2y)3=(x2y)[x2+(x)(2y)+(2y)2] [Substituting]
x38y3=(x2y)(x2+2xy+4y2)

CONDITIONAL INDENTITIES
The identities which are true for all values of the variables involved, subject to the
condition mentioned are called Conditional Identities
Examples:-
1)If a+b+c=0 then a3+b3+c3=3abc
2)If a+b+c=2S then a2+b2c2+2ab=4s(sc)

Example 1
If a+b+c=0 then show that a3+b3+c3=3abc
Solution: - Given a+b+c=0
a+b=c
Cubing on both sides
(a+b)3 =(c)3
a3+b3+3ab(a+b)=c3
a3+b3+3ab(c)=c3 [ a+b=c]
a3+b33abc=c3
a3+b3+c3=3abc

Example 2
If a+b+c=2S then show that s(sa) +s(sb) +s(sc) = s2
Solution: - LHS. s(sa)+s(sb)+s(sc)
=s2sa+s2sb+s2sc
=3s2sasbsc
=3s2s(a+b+c)
=3s2s(2s) [a+b+c=2s]
=3s22s2
=s2 = R.H.S

Example 3
If a + b + c = 2s, prove that a2 + b2 c2 + 2ab = 4s (sc)
Solution:- L.H.S. = a2 + b2 c2+ 2ab.
=a2 + b2 + 2ab c2 by grouping

=(a+b) c 2

=(a+b+c)(a+bc) by factorisation
=(a+b+c)(a+b+c2c)
=2s(2s2c)=2s. 2(sc) =4s (sc) =R.H.S.
