Birth Defects
Instructions: Each student will be assigned a birth defect to research and create a brochure. The
brochure is to help parents understand the type of birth defect, the causes of the birth defect,
preventative measures, who is most susceptible to having the birth defect, when it appears (prenatal,
neonatal, or childhood), the effects the birth defect has on the person, and the type of treatment
available. Students may use information from page 108-109 in text figure 4.3 to help begin their
research, but two other citations are required (internet, magazines, books, etc).
Grading: Points:
7. Explains when the birth defect first appears (pre-natal, neonatal 5 points
childhood, etc).
8. Describes the effects on a person who has this birth defect. 5 points
(physical, mental/intellectual, or emotional effects, and the
quality of life.
