Online Course Delivery and Email

The development of the Internet has made many new things possible. One of these is on-line
course delivery. If used properly on-line course delivery can be very useful in distance education.
Students can save a lot of time and money because they do not have to travel to Colombo or
make telephone calls. The Open University will be able to deliver a better service to students and
save money on postage etc.

The Open University has had an on-line course delivery system under the Distance Education
Modernization Project (DEMP) since 2006. The computer network supporting this system is
known as NODES (National Online Distance Education Service). The NODES network includes
clusters of computers known as NODES Access Centres (NAC) which are located at all
Regional Centres and several Study Centres.

Online course delivery is done using a learning management system (LMS) known as Moodle.
Moodle is a software package that allows you to discuss your problems with each other and with
me. I will be able to post notices, results of examinations, additional course material, useful

internet links etc. on the site for our course. CEX3232 Hydraulics and Hydrology was one of
the first courses to be put on Moodle on the NODES server.

The Open University has been using an an installation of Moodle hosted on the NODES servers
since 2006. However, in the past few years there have been many problems with this service
including service disruptions, browser compatibility issues, etc. While NODES is now under the
Open University, these issues have still not been addressed completely.

Therefore we will use an installation of Moodle provided by a company names Gnomio on the
Internet known as a cloud service - for our course this year. Gnomio provides us a fully
featured, up to date version of Moodle at no charge with the only provision being that they will
run some advertisements on the webpage.

You will be able to access this Moodle server from any computer connected to the Internet. In
particular you can use the NACs in ANY of the following Regional and Study Centres :
Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Batticaloa, Jaffna, Galle, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Ambalangoda,
Ratnapura, Ampara, Monaragala, Bandarawela, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya.

As there are NACs all over the country and as you have already paid for the use of the computers
and the internet connection, CEX3232 will be delivered this year as a blended course. This
means the course will be delivered in the usual way through course material, assignments and
model answers, day schools etc. However, answering questions and participation in the
discussion on the Moodle site will be compulsory. You also have to submit the Mark Sheets for
the Assignments and some sections of the reports of the Home Activities and Laboratory Classes
on the site.

Moodle will also be the main way in which I communicate with students this year. All
announcements regarding the course will be posted on Moodle. It will be your responsibility to
read the these announcements. We will not be mailing any letters or putting up notices at
Regional Centres. The Moodle software also makes it possible for you to receive copies of all
posts (including announcements and notices) to your own email address.

Another important use of Moodle is for you to select your Groups for Laboratory Classes and
also schedule your Vivas. These choices will be made available at the relevant times.

Continuous Assessment

The Continuous Assessment (CA) of the course CEX 3232 Hydraulics and Hydrology has been
conducted in a new way since the year 2006/07. Please read the following and make sure you
understand how the way this course is conducted is different from other courses at the Open

The most important change is that Assignments do not have to be submitted and Assignment
marks are not included in the calculation of the overall Continuous Assessment (CA) mark. The

main reason for this change was that it was found that many students were simply copying the
answers to Assignment questions from other students without learning anything. These students
were obtaining high marks unfairly, while honest students attempting the Assignments on their
own obtained lower marks.

Therefore it was decided not to include the Assignment marks in the CA mark. It is hoped that
this change will encourage students to attempt the Assignments on their own and then learn from
their mistakes when they look at the Model Answers. If things become difficult for you I have
included some Hints that you can look at to get an idea for your answers. Students are expected
to correct their own Assignments based on detailed Model Answers and enter the marks in
detailed Mark Sheets.

Another important change is the introduction of Learning Activities. These are observations and
measurements that students have to make at home using simple apparatus and techniques.

Other features of this course that will be new to you are the introduction of a Learning Diary
(Journal) and Time Sheet. These are intended to help you plan your work and monitor your
progress. These features are described below.

A Viva based on the corrected Assignments and the Home Activities will be conducted towards
the end of the academic year. The marks from this Viva will take the place of the marks given for
the Assignments.

Please also make sure you understand how the Continuous Assessment (CA) mark also known
as the eligibility mark will be calculated. The equation for the CA mark is given on page 7.

Assignments, Hints and Model Answers

You are expected to complete six Assignments for this course. These are available on the
Moodle site. You are advised to complete the Assignments according to the given Work Plan.

Please consider the Assignments to be like an examination. The only difference is that you have
as much time as you want and you can look at the course material, textbooks, the Internet etc.
Please use only ONE SIDE of the paper. The blank side should be kept for corrections and notes.

You should try to answer the Assignments on your own. You will not learn anything by copying
what another student has done. Please also keep in mind that many of the Assignment questions
are the same as in 2015/16. Therefore do not look at any answers from last year. Many of the
questions were also used in the final examination of previous years.

The Model Answers to the Assignments will be made available on the Moodle site. Please do not
look at the Model Answers until you have completed the Assignments or at least made a very
good effort to solve them. Make sure that you try your best to answer the questions before
looking at the answers. Otherwise you will not learn anything.

Please answer the questions to the Assignments on your own do not discuss them with anybody
else. You can discuss the SAQs in the course material and problems from other books with
others but not the answers to the Assignments. Otherwise you will not learn anything.

Please write your answers as neatly as possible but dont worry if you make a mistake and have
to cross out something. Just cross it out neatly and go on. If you cross out a whole page DO NOT
throw it away just attach it at the end of your Assignment.

Please DO NOT write your answers roughly and re-write them neatly after you complete the
answer. I believe that including your mistakes will help you learn and help me understand what
problems you are having.

I find that students cannot resist looking at the Model Answer when they are not able to continue
the answer. Therefore this year I have included some Hints. If you get stuck in your answer look
at the Hint for that section and then try to complete the answer. If you look at a Hint for a section
please note it down in your answer. You should also reduce your marks for that section by 50% .

Once you look at the Model Answer for a certain question do not add to the answer. You can
complete the answer when you do the Corrections as described below. If you follow this
method you will be able to identify your weak points. If you look at the Model Answer and then
add to your answer you will only be fooling yourself!

The Model Answers also contain detailed explanations of some important topics. Therefore you
should read and understand the answers carefully.

Please note that you do not have to submit the assignments. Once you have finished writing out
the answers to the Assignments you can correct them by looking at the Model Answer and enter
the marks in the Mark Sheet.

Please correct your Assignments using a red pen. This will make it easy for me when I look at
your Assignments during the Viva. Note the mistakes you have made on your answer paper.
Write the correct solution on the blank page facing the page where you made the mistake. When
you write the correct solution please use a different colour. Writing the correct solution in this
way will help you when you revise.

Once you have completed correcting your Assignments you should enter your marks in the Mark
Sheets, which will be available on the Moodle site. You can download the Mark Sheet, enter
your marks and comments directly in the document and then submit it to the Assignment Drop
Box on the Moodle site. In this way we do not have to print anything and we save a lot of paper.

Detailed instructions on how to complete the Mark Sheets are given in the next section.

I will look at all the corrected assignments and Mark Sheets at the Viva for the Assignments.

Mark Sheets

As explained earlier, you do not have to submit the completed Assignments this year. Instead
you have to correct the Assignments yourself using the Model Answers given to you and enter
the marks on the Mark Sheets. The Mark Sheets will be available on the Moodle site. You have
to upload the Mark Sheets to the LMS according to the given deadlines.

The Questions in the Assignments have sections a), b) etc. In the Model Answers I have broken
the answer to each section into steps. The steps in a Question are identified by capital letters A,
B, C etc. In the Suggested Answer this letter is given at the end of a Step, followed by the
maximum marks for the step for example C(5).

You have to correct your answers based on the Model Answer. Correct means to mark each
step right or wrong. The steps are identified in the suggested answer and the mark sheet. Enter
the marks for each step in the second column of the table. The first column has the number of the
Question and the letter of the Step.

You should give yourself full marks only for a complete answer numerical answers should
have units, figures should indicate everything I have indicated. If you answer is not complete you
can decide what percentage to give yourself. If you have looked at the Hint for that section you
should reduce the mark by 50%. The marks for every step should be entered in the Mark Sheet
and the total mark for each question calculated.

In the third column I have identified what you needed to complete the step correctly. This could
be a theory, equation or idea. Or it could be a skill like drawing a figure, solving an equation or
simplifying an expression.

The fourth column is for you to write your remarks. Here you can write the reasons for your
mistakes. Please be specific. I want to know exactly what you did not understand or did not
know. It is only with this specific information that I can improve the course. Reasons could be
did not understand the question, did not know the theory, could not solve the equation,
made a mistake solving the equation, or anything else. I will be looking very carefully at the
Remarks that you write. They will help me understand whether you have learned from your

Learning Activities

Learning Activities are a new part of the course. This course deals mostly with the occurrence
and flow of water. While understanding the flow of water is important in Civil Engineering, it is
also something that we all experience in our daily lives. The Learning Activities are meant to
help you relate what you see in your daily life to what is taught in this course. These activities
will help you understand the course material better.

There are eight Home Activities. The Instruction Sheets for all the Home Activities will be given
on the Moodle site. You should perform these activities by yourself or in a group of two only.
Larger groups are not permitted.

If you are working in a group of two each student should write a separate report based on a
separate set of measurements. However you should include the names and registration numbers
of the other student in the group in your report. The students in the group should write their own
answers to the Discussion questions. Only the experimental setup should be the same in the two

The measurements and results obtained in the Home Activities should be recorded in neat
reports. Follow the numbering given in the Instruction Sheets when writing your reports. Follow
the usual guidelines for writing a report. Make sure the units of quantities are included
everywhere text, table headings and graph titles. Be careful about how many significant figures
you use to report your results. The number of significant figures you use should reflect the
accuracy of the measurements.

You will have to submit the reports of Learning Activities 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the Moodle site
BEFORE the Laboratory Classes.

Learning Diary and Time Sheet

The Learning Diary and Time Sheet are meant to help you monitor your progress and also to
help me understand the problems that you have.

The Learning Diary is available on the Moodle site and is for you to fill in your actual progress
every week and write down what problems you had. Please note that only you and I can see what
you write in the Journal.

There is also a Time Sheet that you have to maintain. In the Time Sheet you have to fill in the
number of hours you spent each week on various activities reading course material, answering
assignments etc.

Laboratory Classes

There will be FIVE groups for the first set of classes which are scheduled in May (4 groups) and
July (1 group) between CAT 1 and CAT 2. Each group will have two days of classes and the
same four experiments will be conducted for all the groups.

The second set of laboratory classes are scheduled for August and September (after CAT 2). We
may re-arrange the groups on the course website before these classes.

Please see the section Preparation for Laboratory Classes on the Moodle site for details on how
the classes will be held and assessed. You are expected to study the material listed in that sheet
before you come for the laboratory classes.

The Instruction Sheets for the Laboratory Classes will be handed out on the first day of the
classes. There will be eight experiments this year, held over four days.

Students who have attended the laboratory classes in 2013/14 and 2014/15 do not have to attend
the classes this year if they are satisfied with their marks for their performance during classes.
Students who want the previous mark to be taken should request an exemption from the
Laboratory Classes on the Moodle site by the end of April.

Students requesting an exemption from the Laboratory Classes also have to come for the Viva
for the Laboratory Classes and bring their completed reports for the eight experiments.

I look through all your Laboratory Reports at the Laboratory Viva. I found that many students
had not completed all the work and had not answered all the discussion questions. Many other
students presented very untidy work and wrote long and irrelevant answers. Some students could
not understand what they had written!

I mark your Laboratory Reports based on whether all the calculations and discussions have been
completed, whether the work is neat and all the graphs and tables are of a proper standard and
whether you can explain your calculations and what you have written in the discussions.

This year I will be asking you to submit some sections of your reports on the Moodle site.

Continuous Assessment Mark

There are two important differences in how the overall Continuous Assessment (CA) Mark will
be calculated in this course when compared to other courses in the Faculty. Your performance in
the Assignments and the Laboratory Classes will be evaluated by Viva Voce examinations. Also
the performance in both CAT examinations will be used to calculate the CA mark. The equation
for the CA mark is

CA = 0.2*ASS + 0.5*(0.5*CAT1 + 0.5*CAT2) + 0.3*LAB

Day Schools

The Day Schools will be used to discuss any questions you have after reading the course
material. We will not be conducting lectures. Therefore please come prepared with your
questions. If there are no questions the Day School will end very quickly!

We will discuss the basic concepts of control volumes and the fundamental equations of mass
and momentum conservation at the first Day School.

The Day Schools will be held in a large class room which will be identified on the Notice Board.

Students who are traveling from far away (more than 1 hours) should not need to attend Day
Schools to ask us questions unless it is very important or they have something else to do in
Colombo. They can use the Moodle site or ask for Remote Sessions at their nearest NAC (see

Office Hours

I don't believe that 3 Day Schools over 7 months are enough. Therefore I will maintain Office
Hours at least once a month between the Day Schools. Office Hours are times that I will be in
my Office - on a Sunday or other holiday - and available for you to meet me and ask questions. I
will announce these dates on the course website.

During these Office Hours I will also be available for Remote Discussions with students in
Regional Centres (see below).

Remote Discussions Sessions

Over the last five years I have used the facilities at the NACs to have discussion with students in
Kandy, Matara, Jaffna and Batticaloa. In these Remote Discussion Sessions we used Skype and
other technologies to link two computers one in Colombo where I was and the other at a
Regional Centre where several students were gathered. With this link I could see and hear
students and they could see and hear me. I could also write on my screen and make that visible to

These discussions were quite successful and I am ready to have such sessions this year IF
students are interested.

Study Groups

Students from Matara performed much better than students from Colombo at both the
Continuous Assessment and the Final Examination in 2010/11. 17 of the 24 students who
attended the Vivas at the Matara centre obtained eligibility making up 25% of the total students
eligible. All 17 of these students sat the Final Examination and 14 of them passed.

The main reason for the success of the Matara students in that year is that they studied regularly
and in groups. Please form study groups as much as possible. However, a study group is much
more than some students meeting for a few hours. A proper study group meeting should have an
agenda that means a list of topics you will discuss. Everybody should come prepared to discuss
these topics. One person should keep a record of what was discussed and make a list of things
that you did not understand. This list can be sent to me by posting on Moodle or by email - and
I can try to solve your problems.

Instructional Videos

In addition to the Course Material I will be making a series of Instructional Videos to help you
learn. These videos will be uploaded on YouTube. They will also be available at the NAC
Centres and the Regional Centres. Once I have made several I will create a DVD that you can
watch on your TV at home as well as on a computer.

I hope to translate these videos into Sinhala and Tamil if I have the time.

Final Examination

The format of the final examination paper will be the same as last year. The examination will
consist of a single three-hour paper, consisting of two parts. There will be three structured essay-
type questions in the first part and you will have to answer all of them. The second part will have
four structured essay-type questions of which two have to be answered.

Student Performance in 2015/16

I am providing a summary of the student performance from 2015/16. I hope you will understand
from these statistics that you have to work regularly right through the year to be successful in
this course.

244 students registered for the course. 207 students obtained a CA mark greater than 0 that
means that 207 students did at least one component of the assessment.

206 students sat for CAT 1 and 174 students sat for CAT 2. 177 students attended at least some
of the Laboratory classes while 4 students asked to use the marks obtained in previous years.

108 students came forward for the Assignment Viva while 120 students came forward for the
Laboratory Viva. Those who attended the laboratory classes and sat for the CAT examinations
but did not come to the Vivas were the students who had low marks (generally less than 20%) for
the CAT examinations.

108 students completed all five major components of the assessment (2 CAT examinations,
laboratory classes and 2 Vivas). Of these students 51 obtained eligibility to sit the final
examinations. The spread of marks for the components of the continuous assessment and the
total CA mark is given in the table below.

In this table the first column (headed by 0) indicates the number of students who did not perform
the activity (i.e. the number of students who were absent).

The first row gives the distribution of the marks given for the Viva for the Laboratory classes. In
this Viva I give marks for your Laboratory Reports and also your answers to questions related to
the Laboratory Classes (Apparatus, Procedure, Observations, Preliminary Calculations) and your
Laboratory Reports (Detailed Calculations and Discussions).

The next row gives the spread of marks for the Assignment Viva. At the Assignment Viva I look
at your Portfolio. By Portfolio I mean all the material you compile during the year
Assignments (with corrections), Mark sheets for Assignments (with remarks) and the Reports of
Home Activities. I will give you a mark for the Portfolio and a mark for your answers to
questions related to your Home Activities and Assignments.

The mark for the Assignment Viva combines these marks with the mark given for the Portfolio
(what has been done up to that time) that was brought to the first Laboratory Class where it is
reviewed, some comments made and some marks given.

If you study the distribution of the marks in the table you will see that the worst performance has
been for the CAT 2 (only 26 students received more than 40%). The next worst performance is
in the Laboratory Viva (only 31 students received more than 40%).

171 students (including 49 who obtained Eligibility in 2015/16) sat for the Final Examination
and 42 (including 27 who obtained eligibility in 2015/16) passed. Therefore the pass rate for
those who sat for the Final Examination in the same year as they obtained eligibility is 55%
while the pass rate for students who obtained eligibility in previous years is only 12%.

This statistic shows that it is in your interest to sit for the Final Examination in the same year that
you obtained eligibility. On the other hand if you cannot sit for the Final Examination for some
reason you should understand that you have only a small chance of passing in the following year
unless you repeat the work throughout the year.
