Cleaning axle suspension bearings ‘Whea cleaning the‘axle suspension bearings, put them into a container with kerosene heated up to about 60°C, without degreasing, and leave them for more than 10 minutes, to remove excess grease. Then, blow away sticking grease with compressed ai. Repeat this procedurs a few tives, after which the bearings are fieally washed with clean kerosene at normal temperature. Dry with compressed air, When handling the beating after the final washing, make sure hands are cleaned with such degressing agent-as ethyl alcohol to pfevent the bearing from getting rusty, 4.2.2 Cleaning of other parts Soak the dismantled parts such as the suspension tube, covers and bearing housing in kerosene for more than 30 fninutes to remove grease. Fig. 9 Removal of bearing cup (road whee! end) 44 Reassembling 44.1 General information w @ @ Heating beatings and components far assembly Electric ovens or electrically heated oil baths can be used but these should have thermostatic control, ‘Where oil is heated in a pan or metal container over an open flame, there should bea screen on which the bearings will rest which is raised Z5 Ri or so from the'bottom of the pan. The bearings should not rest on the bottom of the pan as the heat will be transferred directly fromthe flame through the pan to the bearing, This temperature.will be very high and will draw the bearing. IF am induction heater is used, eare should be exercised to prevent residual ueaynetism afTeetiny: the bearing anateria. ' Assembly methods Drivers and sleeves will asmure casies assombly and prevent damage to be ing components If drivers are not available, mild steel bars can be used. Use only mild steel, not hardened duifis or brass bars. The hardened bars will Uamage the bearing and brass will chip casily. On no account should a copper or bfass-faved haynuner be used during assembly of bearing parts. ld st Storage Completed wheelsets must be protected against-the entry of water of foreign matter into the bs housings. ring For short-term storage the wheelsets should Be kept in a covered building. Machined suifaces should be coated with a sultablé rust proventative If the wheelsets are stored outside, the tube should be tuned so that the open portion is ox the lower side and wedged in position. The sssembly’should be cavered with waterproof shests for further pro: tgction and again, the machined surfaces should be coated with a suitable rust preventative 4.4.2.
