2 ODIC FORCE
The Odic force (also called Od [d], Odyle, nd, Odes, Odylic, Odyllic, or Odems) is the name given in the mid-
19th century to a hypothetical vital energy or life forceby Baron Carl von Reichenbach. Von Reichenbach
coined the name from that of the Norse god Odin in 1845. [1][2]

2.2 HISTORY[EDIT]
As von Reichenbach was investigating the manner in which the human nervous system could be affected by
various substances, he conceived the existence of a new force allied to electricity, magnetism, and heat, a
force which he thought was radiated by most substances, and to the influence of which different persons
are variouslysensitive. He named this vitalist concept Odic force. Proponents say that Odic force
[3]
Believers in Odic force said that it is visible in total darkness as colored auras surrounding living things,
crystals, and magnets, but that viewing it requires hours first spent in total darkness, and only very
sensitive people have the ability to see it. They also said that it resembles the eastern
[5]
concepts prana and qi. However, they regarded the Odic force as not associated with breath
(like India's prana and the qi of Eastern martial arts) but rather mainly with
biological electromagnetic fields. [6]
Von Reichenbach did not tie Odic force into other vitalist theories. Baron von Reichenbach expounded the
concept of Odic force in detail in a book-length article, Researches on Magnetism, Electricity, Heat and
Light in their Relations to Vital Forces , which appeared in a special issue of a respected scientific
journal, Annalen der Chemie und Physik . He said that (1) the Odic force had a positive and negative flux, and
a light and dark side; (2) individuals could forcefully "emanate" it, particularly from the hands, mouth, and
forehead; and (3) the Odic force had many possible applications.
The Odic force was conjectured to explain the phenomenon of hypnotism. In Britain, impetus was given to this
view of the subject following the translation of Reichenbach's Researches by a professor ofchemistry at
the University of Edinburgh. These later researches tried to show many of the Odic phenomena to be of the
same nature as those described previously by Franz Mesmer and even long before Mesmer by Swedenborg. [7]
The French parapsychologists Hippolyte Baraduc and Albert de Rochas were influenced by the concept of
the Odic force.
[8]
Von Reichenbach hoped to develop scientific proof for a universal life force; however, his experiments
relied on perceptions reported by individuals who claimed to be "sensitive", as he himself could not observe
any of the reported phenomena. The "sensitives" had to work in total or near-total darkness to be able to
observe the phenomena. Reichenbach stated that, through experimentation, possibly 1/3 of the population
could view the phenomenon, but far less otherwise.
2.3 SCIENTIFIC RECEPTION[EDIT]
The concept of Odic force was criticized by the scientific community as there was no reliable or replicable
data for its existence. In the 19th century it was described as quackery by critics and is regarded today as
an example of pseudoscience. [9][10][11]
Science writer Martin Gardner in his book Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science (1957) noted that
"scientists were unable to duplicate the baron's experiments." [12]
The baron had no training in psychology or psychopathology and no training in devising experiments
involving people. He applied many standard scientific techniques and followed standard practices of data
collection and recording, including graphs and charts. But he seems to have had no sense of how to do a
controlled experiment with so-called "sensitives," people who might better be described as neurotics or
delusional. (Jastrow says that for the most part, his subjects were "neurotic young women.") Given the fact
that he deceived himself so thoroughly over such a long period of time, it seems reasonable to assume that
he was (at the very least) unconsciously suggesting behaviors to his subjects. His enthusiasm for the
project undoubtedly biased his subjective observations. That he came to think that the odic force could
explain dozens of disparate phenomena, while being unable to convince other scientists that he had
discovered anything, signifies the pathological nature of his investigations. Reichenbach's pursuit of the
odic force is a classic example of pathological science.[13]
Scientists have abandoned concepts such as the Odic force. In western popular culture the name is used in a
similar way to qi or prana to refer to spiritual energies or the vital force associated with living things. In
Europe, the Odic force has been mentioned in books on dowsing, for example. [14]

cclvi. Cancelled_(South_Park)
cclxxvi. Plot[edit]
cclxxvii. This episode begins almost identically to the very first South
Park episode, "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe",
with Cartman arriving and talking about a dream where he
was abducted by aliens. There are some minor differences
from the previous episode such as Cartman calling Ike a
"semen-puking asshole dickhead" after Kyle tells him not to
call his brother a "dildo" and Ike saying more profane
statements like "Suck my balls" and "Don't kick the goddamn
baby!" When the children realize that all this has happened
before, they come to the conclusion that they are stuck in a
"repeat," they and Chef decide to do something about the anal
probe Cartman has; they first see a proctologist, then a
scientist. Cartman then refuses to activate the satellite
unless Kyle is the one who sticks his finger into his ass.
Cartman torments Kyle seven times by continually farting,
and finally Kyle gets fed up and plugs him. The scientist, Jeff
Goldblum,[1] discovers that he can reverse the polarity of
the message that the alien ship is transmitting. A group
of Visitors then show up, and the children and Chef flee.
However, the children are ultimately abducted.
cclxxviii. The kids wake up on the ship, and meet Najix, an alien who
looks like Stan's dad, and explains that he chose an
appearance that would be most pleasing to them. They hate
this as it is too reminiscent of the movieContact, which they
hated. He shows his true form, a grotesque, terrifying
monster, so the children have him go through a series of
transformations, mostly of celebrities or famous television
characters, until Cartman suggests "a taco that craps ice
cream". Najix then explains he and the other aliens make
a reality show called Earth, and all of Earth's species, such
as Asians, bears, ducks, Jews, deer and Hispanics, are taken
from their respective home planets for the purposes of the
show, and everyone around the world is unknowingly being
filmed and watched.
cclxxix. The scientist discovers this at the same time on Earth by
translating the binary code that resulted from reversing
the polarity of the message he proceeds to tell everyone,
which leads the alien network heads to cancel the show and
prepare to destroy the Earth. The scientist concludes that
the show is cancelled thanks to associating the term "chaos
theory" up to "cancelled", then uses his word association
skills with the word "jackets" to come up with a plan to send
the ship a computer virus to disable their computers. Chef
responds "That doesn't make any goddamned sense!". When
word spreads to the rest of the planet that Earth is one big
reality show, humans become elated that they're famous.
cclxxx. In outer space, Najix is informed that Earth is being
cancelled, because humans' knowledge that they are a
reality television show has ruined the program's quality.
When the boys are informed that Earth will be destroyed in
order to make way for something more useful, they go to the
planet Fognl to meet the alien producers, the "Joozians", a
species that control all media in the universe. The aliens are
unmoved by the boy's pleas to save Earth, explaining that
after 100 episodes, the show should be cancelled because
shows tend to lose quality after 100 episodes. The Joozians
then go to a strip bar, and inhale a purple powder in a
manner similar to cocaine. They later get a hotel room with
a hooker, and engage in acts that Kenny photographs. When
Joozians later sober up and express shame and
embarrassment at their prior acts, the boys agree not to
publicize their photo of the Joozians' sexual interlude if the
Joozians agree to refrain from destroying Earth. The
Joozians agree to this, though they decide to wipe out the
truth about Earth's nature as a reality show from the
memories of all humans, including those of the boys.
cclxxxi. Back on Earth, the boys have no memory of what transpired,
but Kenny still has the photo, and though no one can
remember what it is, Chef tells Kenny to keep it, as he feels
sure that it is something very important. The episode ends
with another advertisement forEarth, promising that in the
next episode the "Americans and Iraqis have an all-out
brawl". (Coincidentally, the invasion of Iraq was launched on
March 19, 2003, the night of this episode's original airing.)

the Hunebed tombs of the Netherlands and the three massive

they do not fit the above definition. The location of the
megalithic structures is atop of a hill in the region, known as
Tel Baalbek. Numerous archaeological expeditions have
gone to the site starting in the 19th century, primarily
German and French groups, and into the 20th century
research continued.[1] Each one of these stones is 70 feet
long, 14 feet high, 10 feet thick, and weigh around 800
tons. These three stone blocks are the largest building
blocks ever used by any human beings anywhere in the
world.[2] The supporting stone layer beneath features a
number of stones which are still in the order of 350 tons and
35 feet wide.[3] In the quarry nearby, two Roman building
blocks, which were intended for the same podium, even
surpass 1,000 tons, lying there unused since their extraction
in ancient times.[4]

Lilith
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about the Jewish mythological figure Lilith. For other uses, see Lilith (disambiguation).
Lilith (1892) by John Collier in Southport Atkinson Art Gallery
Lilith (Hebrew: Ll) is a figure in Jewish mythology, developed earliest in the Babylonian
Talmud (3rd to 5th centuries CE). The character is generally thought to derive in part from a
historically far earlier class of female demons (liltu) in Mesopotamian religion, found
in cuneiform texts of Sumer, Akkad, Assyria, and Babylonia.
Evidence in later Jewish materials is plentiful, but little information has survived relating to the original
Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian and Babylonian view of these demons. While the connection is almost
universally agreed upon, recent scholarship has disputed the relevance of two sources previously
used to connect the Jewish lilith to an Akkadian liltuthe Gilgamesh appendix and the Arslan Tash
amulets.[1] (See below for discussion of the two problematic sources. [2])
In Hebrew-language texts, the term lilith or lilit (translated as "night creatures", "night monster", "night
hag", or "screech owl") first occurs in a list of animals in Isaiah 34:14, either in singular or plural form
according to variations in the earliest manuscripts. In the Dead Sea Scrolls' Songs of the Sage the
term first occurs in a list of monsters. In Jewish magical inscriptions on bowls and amulets from the
6th century CE onwards, Lilith is identified as a female demon and the first visual depictions appear.
In Jewish folklore, from the satirical book Alphabet of Ben Sira (ca 7001000 CE) onwards, Lilith
appears as Adam's first wife, who was created at the same time (Rosh Hashanah) and from the same
dirt as Adam compare Genesis 1:27. (This contrasts with Eve, who was created from one of Adam's
ribs: Genesis 2:22) The legend developed extensively during the Middle Ages, in the tradition
of Aggadic midrashim, the Zohar, and Jewish mysticism.[3] For example, in the 13th-century writings of
Rabbi Isaac ben Jacob ha-Cohen, Lilith left Adam after she refused to become subservient to him and
then would not return to the Garden of Eden after she had coupled with the archangel Samael.[4] The
resulting Lilith legend continues to serve as source material in modern Western culture,
literature, occultism, fantasy, and horror.

Etymology[edit]
The semitic root L-Y-L served as derivative for the Hebrew layil and Arabic layl, meaning "night".
The Talmudic and Yiddish use of Lilith cognates with the Hebrew.
In the Akkadian language of Assyria and Babylonia the terms lili and lltu mean spirits. Some uses
of lltu are listed in The Assyrian Dictionary of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago (CAD,
1956, L.190), in Wolfram von Soden's Akkadisches Handwrterbuch (AHw, p. 553), and Reallexikon
der Assyriologie (RLA, p. 47).[5]
The Sumerian she-demons lili have no etymologic relation to Akkadian lilu, "evening."[6]
Archibald Sayce (1882)[7] considered that Hebrew lilit (or lilith) Hebrew: ;and the
earlier Akkadian: lltu are from proto-Semitic. Charles Fossey (1902)[8] has this literally translating to
"female night being/demon," although cuneiform inscriptions from Mesopotamia exist
where Llt and Lltu refers to disease-bearing wind spirits.[citation needed] Another possibility is association
not with "night," but with "wind," thus identifying the Akkadian Lil-itu as a loan from
the Sumerian lil, "air" specifically from Ninlil, "lady air," goddess of the south wind (and wife of Enlil)
and itud, "moon".[citation needed]

The spirit in the tree in the Gilgamesh cycle[edit]
Samuel Noah Kramer (1932, published 1938) [9] translated ki-sikil-lil-la-ke as Lilith in "Tablet XII" of
the Epic of Gilgamesh dated c.600 BCE. "Tablet XII" is not part of the Epic of Gilgamesh, but is a
later Assyrian Akkadian translation of the latter part of the Sumerian poem of Gilgamesh and the
Netherworld.[10] The ki-sikil-lil-la-ke is associated with a serpent and a zu bird.[11] In Gilgamesh and the
Netherworld, a huluppu tree grows in Inanna's garden in Uruk, whose wood she plans to use to build
a new throne. After ten years of growth, she comes to harvest it and finds a serpent living at its base,
a Zu bird raising young in its crown, and that a ki-sikil-lil-la-ke made a house in its trunk. Gilgamesh is
said to have smitten the snake, and then the zu bird flew away to the mountains with its young, while
the ki-sikil-lil-la-ke fearfully destroys its house and runs for the forest. [12][13] Identification of ki-sikil-lil-la-
ke as Lilith is stated in Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible (1999).[14] According to a new
source from Late Antiquity, Lilith appears in a Mandaic magic story where she is considered to
represent the branches of a tree with other demonic figures that form other parts of the tree, though
this may also include multiple "Liliths".[15]
Suggested translations for the Tablet XII spirit in the tree include ki-sikil as "sacred place", lil as
"spirit", and lil-la-ke as "water spirit".[16] but also simply "owl", given that the lil is building a home in the
trunk of the tree. [17]
A connection between the Gilgamesh ki-sikil-lil-la-ke and the Jewish Lilith was rejected by Dietrich
Opitz (1932)[18] and rejected on textual grounds by Sergio Ribichini (1978). [19]
In the Bible[edit]
The only occurrence is in the Book of Isaiah 34:14, describing the desolation of Edom, where the
Hebrew word lilit (or lilith) appears in a list of eight unclean animals, some of which may have demonic
associations. Since the word lilit (or lilith) is a hapax legomenon in the Hebrew Bible and the other
seven terms in the list are better documented, the reading of scholars and translators is often guided
by a decision about the complete list of eight creatures as a whole. [26][27] Quoting from Isaiah 34 (NAB):
(12) Her nobles shall be no more, nor shall kings be proclaimed there; all her princes are
gone. (13) Her castles shall be overgrown with thorns, her fortresses with thistles and briers.
She shall become an abode for jackals and a haunt for ostriches. (14) Wildcats shall meet
with desert beasts, satyrs shall call to one another; There shall the Lilith repose, and find for
herself a place to rest. (15) There the hoot owl shall nest and lay eggs, hatch them out and
gather them in her shadow; There shall the kites assemble, none shall be missing its mate.
(16) Look in the book of the LORD and read: No one of these shall be lacking, For the mouth
of the LORD has ordered it, and His spirit shall gather them there. (17) It is He who casts the
lot for them, and with His hands He marks off their shares of her; They shall possess her
forever, and dwell there from generation to generation.
Hebrew text[edit]
In the Masoretic Text:
Hebrew: - ; -
, -
,
Hebrew (ISO 259): u-pagu iyyim et-iyyim v-sair al-rhu yiqra; ak-am hirgia lilit u-
maa lah manoa[28]
34:14 "And shall-meet desert creatures with jackals
the goat he-calls his- fellow
lilit (lilith) she-rests and she-finds rest[29]
34:15 there she-shall-nest the great-owl, and she-lays-(eggs), and she-hatches, and she-
gathers under her-shadow:
hawks[kites, gledes ] also they-gather, every one with its mate.
In the Dead Sea Scrolls, among the 19 fragments of Isaiah found
at Qumran, the Great Isaiah Scroll (1Q1Isa) in 34:14 renders the
creature as plural liliyyot (or liliyyoth).[30][31]
Eberhard Schrader (1875)[32] and Moritz Abraham
Levy (1885)[33] suggest that Lilith was a goddess of the night, known
also by the Jewish exiles in Babylon. Schrader and Levy's view is
therefore partly dependent on a later dating of Deutero-Isaiah to the
6th century BC, and the presence of Jews in Babylon which would
coincide with the possible references to the Lltu in
Babylonian demonology. However, this view is challenged by some
modern research such as by Judit M. Blair (2009) who considers that
the context indicates unclean animals. [34]
Greek version[edit]
The Septuagint translates the reference into Greek as onokentauros,
apparently for lack of a better word, since also the se'irim, "satyrs",
earlier in the verse are translated with daimon onokentauros. The
"wild beasts of the island and the desert" are omitted altogether, and
the "crying to his fellow" is also done by the daimon onokentauros.[35]
Latin Bible[edit]
The early 5th-century Vulgate translated the same word
as Lamia.[36][37]
et occurrent daemonia onocentauris et pilosus clamabit alter ad
alterum ibi cubavit lamia et invenit sibi requiem
The translation is: "And demons shall meet with monsters, and one
hairy one shall cry out to another; there the lamia has lain down and
found rest for herself...".
English versions[edit]
Wycliffe's Bible (1395) preserves the Latin rendering Lamia:
Isa 34:15 Lamya schal ligge there, and foond rest there to hir silf.
The Bishops' Bible of Matthew Parker (1568) from the Latin:
Isa 34:14 there shall the Lamia lye and haue her lodgyng.
Douay-Rheims Bible (1582/1610) also preserves the Latin
rendering Lamia:
Isa 34:14 "And demons and monsters shall meet, and the hairy ones shall cry out one to
another, there hath the lamia lain down, and found rest for herself."
The Geneva Bible of William Whittington (1587) from the
Hebrew:
Isa 34:14 and the screech owl shall rest there, and shall finde for her selfe a quiet dwelling.
Then the King James Version of the Bible (1611):
Isa 34:14 "The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and
the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a
place of rest."
The "screech owl" translation of the KJV is,
together with the "owl" (yanup, probably a
water bird) in 34:11 and the "great owl" (qippoz,
properly a snake) of 34:15, an attempt to render
the passage by choosing suitable animals for
difficult-to-translate Hebrew words.

Dead Sea Scrolls[edit]
The Dead Sea Scrolls contain one indisputable

And I, the Instructor, proclaim His glorious
splendour so as to frighten and to te[rrify] all the

Greco-Roman mythology[edit]
Main article: Lamia (mythology)
In the Latin Vulgate Book of Isaiah 34:14, Lilith
is translated lamia.
According to Augustine Calmet, Lilith has
connections with early views on vampire and
sorcery:
Some learned men have thought they
discovered some vestiges of vampirism in the
remotest antiquity; but all that they say of it
does not come near what is related of the
vampires. The lami, the strig, the sorcerers
whom they accused of sucking the blood of
living persons, and of thus causing their death,
the magicians who were said to cause the death
of new-born children by charms and malignant
spells, are nothing less than what we
understand by the name of vampires; even
were it to be owned that these lami and strig
have really existed, which we do not believe can
ever be well proved.
Arabic mythology[edit]
Lilith (Arabic: )is not found in
the Quran or Hadith. The Sufi occult
writer Ahmad al-Buni (d.1225) in his Shams al-
Ma'arif al-Kubra (Sun of the Great Knowledge,
Arabic: ) mentions a demon
called the mother of children, a term also used
"in one place" [75] in the Jewish Zohar and is
therefore probably derived from Jewish
mythology.
In Western literature[edit]
In German literature[edit]
Lilith's earliest appearance in the literature of
the Romantic period (17891832) was
in Goethe's 1808 work Faust: The First Part of
the Tragedy.[76]
In English literature[edit]
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which
developed around 1848,[77] were greatly
influenced by Goethe's work on the theme of
Lilith. In 1863, Dante Gabriel Rossetti of the
Brotherhood began painting what would later be
his first rendition of Lady Lilith, a painting he
expected to be his "best picture
hitherto".[77] Symbols appearing in the painting
allude to the "femme fatale" reputation of the
Romantic Lilith: poppies (death and cold) and
white roses (sterile passion). Accompanying
his Lady Lilith painting from 1866, Rossetti
wrote a sonnet entitled Lilith, which was first
published in Swinburne's pamphlet-review
(1868), Notes on the Royal Academy
Exhibition.[78] The poem and the picture
appeared together alongside Rossetti's
painting Sibylla Palmifera and the sonnet Soul's
Beauty. In 1881, the Lilith sonnet was renamed
"Body's Beauty" in order to contrast it
and Soul's Beauty. The two were placed
sequentially in The House of Life collection
(sonnets number 77 and 78).[77]

After God created Adam, who was alone,
He said, 'It is not good for man to be alone.'
He then created a woman for Adam, from
the earth, as He had created Adam himself,
and called her Lilith. Adam and Lilith
immediately began to fight. She said, 'I will
not lie below,' and he said, 'I will not lie
beneath you, but only on top. For you are fit
only to be in the bottom position, while I am
to be the superior one.' Lilith responded,
'We are equal to each other inasmuch as
we were both created from the earth.' But
they would not listen to one another. When
Lilith saw this, she pronounced the Ineffable
Name and flew away into the air.
