How do we accommodate these students?

*Preferred method: Rest breaks, as permitted

Cooperative learning strategies
Additional time for in-class assignments
Allow student to audio record lectures
Avoid use of high pressure situations
Use multiple choice test questions in lieu of essay
responses, when possible.
Rescheduling exams

IMPLEMENTING REST BREAKS:

When the student is feeling exhausted, give them a few minutes to lay their head
down.
When the student is about to begin a big assignment, a rest break before or after is
ideal.
When a student begins to wander off mentally, a rest break could be helpful in
redirecting the students attention.
HOW TO ADJUST ACCORDING TO THE
STUDENTS RESPONSE:
If a student is responding appropriately, continue
the rest breaks, as needed.
If a student is not responding appropriately to
the rest breaks, allowing the child to step outside of
the room (free of any peers) to clear their
frustrations is another option.
If a student is not responding at all to the rest
breaks, they may need to be sooner in a lesson or a
different method needs to be executed.

.4% were classified as having a TBI.

HOW DO WE MONITOR & ASSESS PROGRESS?

Students with TBI often respond well to graphic organizers.
Providing learners with detailed rubrics outlining benchmarks is
advantageous to the student, as well.

Although some children with brain injury experience persistent cognitive and behavioral
changes, when provided appropriate resources and strategies, all students can reach
maximum potential.
