SOP for starting ofHT motor

In the recent past there is a rise in the failure rate of HT motors. One of the major contributors of
such failure is repeated starting without following the manufacturer's guidelines htarting
procedure.

The life of HT motor mainly depends on number of starts as well as interval between (he start.
Efforts must be continued to avoid unwarranted tripping by proper inspection, maintenance,.
protection coordination and enhancing reliability of operation of auxiliary systems like ventilation,
lubrication, vibration monitoring, temperature scanning etc.

Moreover it is observed that many a time cohsecutive starts are taken even when the motor had
tripped on electrical protection. So it was felt that the existing procedure for starting HT motor
needs revision to make it more comprehensive. In order to have a uniform starting procedure for
HI motors following SOP must be followed.

TRIPPING OF HT MOTOR ON TECHNOLOGICAL PROTECTION:

(Failure of ventilation, lubrication, high vibration, high winding temperature)

CASE-I: Tripping during starting from ambient temperature (cold start)

After elimination of cause of tripping and drive coasting to rest one start is permitted with due
intimation to shift in-charge /shift manager PSD. .

If it trips again, eliminate the cause and further start is permitted only after 30 minutes with"
due permission from dispatcher/shift manager. Wherever winding temperature scanners are
available, ensure before starting the temperature is within limit. The Shift In charge
Electrical of concerned shop shall inform shift in-charge /shift manager in this regan1.

Time interval between 3rd and 4thstart shall be at least one hour.

For Plate Mill synchronous machines when stopped by application of dynamic braking further
start is permitted only after attainment of normal temperature.

CASE-2 Tripping during running (hot start)

After elimination of cause of tripping and drive coast~ngto rest one hot start is permiW:dwith
due intimationto shift in-charge/shift manage~'. .

If it trips again, eliminate the cause and further start is permitted only after 45 minutes with
due permission from shift in-charge /shift manager.

Beyond fourth start shift in-charge /shift manager shall obtain clearance from higher-up.
TRIPPING OF HT MOTOR ON ELECTRICAL PROTECTION:
(Permissionfor starting to be sought from ShiftManager/ Shift In-chargePSD)

1. Operation of Earth Fault Protection (10)

A.-Earth Fault during starting
Case - I: Motor trips on earth fault along with system earth fault signal at'MSDS
/sub-station. Megger power cable and motor separately.
a) Ifthe fault is in the cable porti<;,nthen rectify the fault and take start. :

b) If the fault is visible at motor terminal (Flash mark); clean, reinsulc;te and'
megger. Permit start if megger value is ok.
c) If the megger value of motor is ok but fault is not visible then
i. Replace motor if there is a history of repeated motor failures.
ii. Arrange for HV Test / Winding Resistance measurement, etc. and take a
decision based upon the results.
(Burning smell at the niotor terminals indicates damage inside the winding /
leads) ,

Case- II: If system earth fault appears and persists but the motor does not trip then
switch off the motor immediately.
Case-III: .If system earth fault is generated and disappears but motor'
doesn't trip allow it to run.

B. Earth Fault during running .

I. If earth fault protection operates and system earth fault appears during running
then follow the instructions as m~ntioned in Case-I above. '
II. If earth fault relay operates at the time of switching off then most probably one of
the HT CB pole has not opened.

2. Operation of Unbalance Protection (12)

A During starting
1. Check HT fuses (in case of vacuum contactor) and inspect breaker if it is MOCB.
II. Check HT CB for single phasing, all cable terminations, motor terminals and star.
point terminals. Check tightness of cable connections at motor terminals and in
the HT panel -;>

III. Check winding continuity with multimeter (preferably) and IR using megger. If
the values are normal then permit start.
IV. If it trips once again then replace the relay if it is CTMM; measure the winding ':
resistance and megger. If values are found normal permit another start.
V. If it trips again then do not permIt further start.

B. During running
Follow steps I, II & III above.

3. Operation of short circuit Protection (II)

A. During starting
I. Look for any sign of voltage dip or voltage dip associated trippings of other
equipment. Megger, inspect MOCB, motor terminals, cable end termination and
look for any deterioration, burning smell and smoke, etc. If found normal permit
start.
II. If it trips again replace relay (if it is CTMM), check all points of'!, above (megger
motor and cable separately) .If found normal then permit start.
B. During running
Look for any sign of voltage dip or voltage dip associated tripping 6f other
/ equipment. Megger cable and motor separately, inspect MOCB, motor terminals,
cable end termination and look for any deterioration, burning smell and srroke, etc.
Replace motor if cable is found healthy.

4. Operation of Stalling Protection 11(t)

A During starting
I. Ask shop to look for any sign of mechanical jamming / partially or fully open
outlet damper.
II. After getting clearance from shop permit start.
III. If it trips again and other physical conditions mention at'!' are norm:.!lthen
do not permit another start. There may be damage to rotor bars.
IV. Plan for motor replacement.

B. During running
Shop may be asked to find out reason of excessive jamming. Permit staJi after
clearance from shop.

5. Operation of Thermal Overload Protection (Ith) during starting / running

I. Look into all conditions leading to overload viz jarbming, excessively opened
delivery valve / outlet damper. Permit start if found normal after resetting thermal
protection.
II. Observe starting / load current.
III. If the protection operates again replace relay (if it is CTMM) and permit start.
IV. Do not permit further starts if motor trips again.

6. Operation of Out-Of-Step Protection:

I. There are two timers which are associated with out-of-step protection. Timer
having longer delay (Usually 16sec or more) blocks the operation of out:of-step
protection for the normal starting period. After expiry of first delay out"of-step
protection is made effective. During this time if asynchronous operation takes place
and persists; it activates second time delay (4 sec approx) which trips main circuit
breakers. Ensure operation of out-of-step protection only by looking at flag of 4.0
sec timer. The flag of out-of-step relay or flag of timer having higher setting may
be misleading. .
II. If operation of out-of-step prot(;:ctionis confirmed then ask shop to take a DC check
after inspecting slip rings and brushes. DC check is possible where fielp of the
motor is fed by thyristor based static exciter.
III. The shop may be asked to check coupling, slip rings, and brush condition of exciter
where the motors are fed from rotary exciter.
IV. If step 2 or 3 found normal permit one start of the motor.
V. If it trips again on same protection, next start is permitted only after checking and
clearance by ETL.
" ""
All tripping of HT motor onelectricalprotection to be communicated to ETL Uyshift '

Manager.

Any change in relay setting by ETL is to be discussed with PSD & logge4 in S/S log-'<
book
