Assignment-1
Due Date: Thursday, August 17, 2017 Slot: B1

Faculty : Dr. Bibin John

Instructions : 1) Submissions after the deadline will not be considered for evaluation. 2) Symbols
and abbreviations will have their regular meaning. 3) For air, take = 1.4 and cp = 1005 J/kgK
unless otherwise specified.

[1.] Air as perfect gas with constant properties has a total temperature of 300 K and a
velocity of 300 m/s at a point in a duct. What is its static temperature? What is the total
pressure if the measured static pressure is 1.8 bar.

[2.] Air flows through a blower where its total pressure is increased by 150 mm of water.
At the inlet p0 =1.05 bar and T0 =150 C. find the exit total pressure, total temperature, the
isentropic and actual changes in total enthalpy.

[3.] An air compressor has eight st ages of equal pressure ratio 1.35. The flow rate through
the compressor and its overall efficiency are 50 kg/sec and 82 %, respectively. If the conditions
of air at entry are 1.0 bar and 400 C, determine (i). The state of air at the compressor exit,
(ii). Polytropic efficiency, (iii). Efficiency of each stage and (iv). Power required to drive the
compressor assuming overall efficiency of the drive as 90%.

[4.] The increase in total enthalpy of fluid flowing through a turbine is 6.1 kJ/kg when
the inlet total pressure and temperature are 1.013 bar and 300 C respectively. What class of
turbomchine is this? Find the exit total temperature if the fluid is air. If the total-to-total
efficiency is 75% and the fluid is air, what is the total pressure ration across the machine? Also
find the total pressure ratio across the machine if the fluid is water and the efficiency is the
same as with air.

[5.] Air flows through a turbine where its stagnation pressure is decreased in the ratio of
5 : 1. The total-to-total efficiency is 80% and the flow rate is 5 kg/sec. If thetotal power output
is 400 KW, find (i) the actual exit total temperature (ii) the actual exit static temperature, if
the flow velocity at exit is 100 m/sec and (iii) the total-to-static efficiency.

[6.] A gas turbine nozzle has a pressure ratio of 1.8. The initial pressure and temperature
are 3.5 bar and 1050K. The gas velocity at exit is 548 m/s. Determine the efficiency of the
nozzle and exit Mach number. Take R = 287 J/KgK, =1.4.

[7.] A diffuser at the exit of a gas turbine has an area ratio of 2.0. If the static pressure
at the exit is 1.013 bar and the velocity of the gas 30 m/s, calculate the static pressure of the
gas at the turbine exit. Take diffuser efficiency equal to 77 % and density of gas as 1.25 kg/m3
(constant).

[8.] At the inlet of an air compressor the area-averaged velocity is C1 =300 m/s, the flow
area is A1 =0.08m2 , and the environmental temperature and pressure are atmospheric at Tenv
=300 K and Penv =100 kPa. The compressor blading delivers 3 MW of work to the working
fluid. Assume the air is a perfect gas with (ratio of specific heat capacities) equal to 1.4.

Evaluate:

1. the stagnation and static pressures, temperatures, and densities at inlet;

2. the maximum stagnation pressure P02max that can be reached at the outlet;

3. the entropy generated by irreversibility, if the actual stagnation pressure reached at the
outlet is P02 = 0.97 P02max .

[9.] write short notes on losses of turbomachines.
