Density for granular material (p) 2000 kg/m3

bearing pressure 100 kN/m2
g 9.81
fy 460
h 8.3 m
w 3.5 m
w1 + w2 + w3 / 2 2.9 m
x 2 m
a) Sliding force

Horizontal force : It is assumed that the coefficient of active pressure, Ka = 0.33

for this granular material. So the earth pressure due to the retained material is given by
Pa = KaPgh
Pa = 53.74 Kn/m2

Allowing for the minimum required surcharge of 10 kn/m2, an additional horizontal pressure
Ps = 3.3 kN/m2
Act uniformly over the whole depth h.

Therefore, the horizonta force on 1m length of wall is

Hk = 0.5Pah + Psh
Hk = 250.4 kN

Vertical load:
Wall = 86.4 kN
Base = 25.2 kN
Earth 1 = 188.352 kN
Earth 2 = 33.354 kN
Surcharge = 12 kN
Total 345.306 kN

For stability calculation a partial factor of safety of 1.6 is used for lateral loading
Safety factor 1.4 is used for strength calculation
i) Sliding
Assume value of coefficient of friction, u = 0.45

Frictional resisting force = 155.4 kN

sliding force= 400.7 kN

Therefore, sliding FAILED

Since the sliding force exceeds the frictional force, resistance must also be provided by the
passive earth pressure acting against a heel beam and this force is given by
Hp = Yf x 0.5 Kp x p x g x aa
Where Kp is the coefficient of passive pressure, assumed to be
3 for this granular material, and 'a' is a depth of the below the 0.3 m trench
If sliding failed, pls proceed with this calculation

allowed in front of the base

Therefore

Hp = 10.59 kN

Sliding must now be considered on a plane at the level of the underside of the heel beam.
Thus,

Pa = 57.62 kN/m2
and
Hk = 285.8 kN

Vertical loads are increased by weight of soil + heel beam

41.99 kN
Thus taking =0.58 at this level, (=tan where = 30o)

Resisting force = 235.2 kN

Sliding force = 457.3 kN

Therefore, sliding FAILED

b) Overturning

Taking moment about point A at the edge of the toe and ignoring the heel beam,
at the ultimate limit state

overturning moment = Yf(0.5Pahh/3 + Pshh/2)

= 1169 kn m

restraining moment = 711.5 Kn m

Overturning is FAILED
c) Bearing pressure

Bearing pressure, p = N/D + 6M/DD

where M is moment about the base centre line. Therefore, ignoring the heel beam

M= 617.0154 + 113.7 + -21.6 + -216.6048 + -13.8

M= 478.7 Kn m

Therefore
max bearing pressure, P1 = 333.1 kN/m2

Bearing pressure is FAILED

d) Bending reinforcement

i) Wall

Horizontal force = Yf 0.5Kapghh + Yf Psh

290.1 + 37

327.02 kN

Considering the effective span, the maximum moment is

M= 970 kNm

Z= 0.95d
503.5

As = 4410.3 mm2/m

Provide : T32-150 c/c 4825mm2/2

ii) Base

The critical partial factors of safety are

Yf = 1.4 and Yf2 =Yf3 =1.0

M= 771.0 kN m

and

N= 312.0 kN

Therefore
pressure P1 = 466.7 kN/m2
P2 = -288.5 kN/m2
P3 = -29.55 kN/m2
Heel

Taking moment about about the stem centre line for the vertical loads and bearing pressure

M= 355.2 kN m

Therefore

As = 1699.1 mm2/m

Provide : T20-150 c/c 1884mm2/2

iii) Distribution bar

Bottom and longitudinal distribution steel which is required in the wall and base is
(also can be use for heel beam)
As = 780 mm2/m

Provide : T16-200 c/c 1005mm2/2
