The next game against Ghana would
be critical to continue that wave of
support.!
But it was not to be.! The match
against Ghana turned out to be heart-
wrenching.! Once again, Bob Bradley
had gone with Ricardo Clark in
midfield and Robbie “I can’t finish a
sandwich”!Findley up front.! This
proved costly as we had to use
substitutions early on in the match
after Kevin Prince-Boateng slammed
home an early goal.! For the third time
in four matches we had conceded
early because we weren’t prepared.!
Even after we had equalized on
Donovan’s penalty, it seemed like
Ghana were going to be the team
going through, especially once it went
into extra time.! As the match wore
on, we were clearly exhausted but
having wasted two substitutions fixing
Bradley’s mistakes we couldn’t do
anything about it, and we had to
watch as Ghana ran circles around us.!
In the end, I couldn’t help but wonder
“what if” on many levels; what if
selection? What if Findley knew how to
finish his chances?! What if Jozy
Altidore didn’t get lost in the
moment?! What it we had Charlie
Davies?! Despite the success of CONTRIBUTORS:

OH, WHEN THE YANKS! A USA World Cup Report

Of all the groups in the World Cup,
ours was getting the most attention
over here, and for good reason.! For
the first time since that famed win in
1950, England and we Colonists
would be going head-to-head in the
World Cup.! And, oh yeah, Algeria
and Slovenia could come play if they
wanted to, also.
When I saw the draw, I was very
excited.! I thought we had gotten a
fair draw, despite England, so I liked
our chances.! Looking at the team we
were bringing, the group we were in,
how we had done at the
Confederations Cup and all the other
factors, I thought this team had an
opportunity to impress. The
expectations were definitely high.! For
me, and in talking to other supporters,
the consensus was that anything short
of advancing to the Round of 16 would
be a failure.! It was time for the US to
take the next step as a soccer nation,
and this time around was their chance.!
As we learned, the US quickly had bigger
fish to fry than getting out of the group
stage.! I was watching it with a friend
and both of us were stunned when
Captain Scouse scored so early on.! As
was our M.O. during qualification, we
had given ourselves an uphill battle by
being in a daze at the start of a match.!
It was terrible play by Ricardo Clark, and
Onyewu was slow to react to the
danger.! I only hoped we would recover.!
Fortunately, Robert Green had a bit of a
howler which put us on level terms,
restoring our hopes.! As both sides
traded chances as the game progressed,
it became hard to say who the better
team was.! In the end, I thought a draw
was the fairest result, as both teams had
portions of the play, both had chances
and both had to make fantastic
defensive plays to cut out opportunities.
With a point in hand, we moved on to
Slovenia, and what I thought was a very
winnable game. We sat in good position,
tied for second in the group, still in
control of our own fate. But once again,
we were pegged back early.! I thought
we actually started well in that match.!
But we fell asleep at the back again, got
caught on the counter-attack and really
should have done better to close down
what was a very good strike. All of a
sudden it was “here we go again”.! Even
though we recovered well enough to get
back on the attack, we got lazy at the
back once more and our task got larger
when Slovenia tallied a second goal.! We
needed a boost, and we needed one
early and thank you Landon Donovan for
giving it to us.! His fantastic rocket into
the top of the net gave us just the bump
we needed, and it was like a switch was
flipped.! The whole second half we had
the best of the play, despite scrambling
in defense at times.! We just lacked that
final ball or clinical touch for the
equalizer.! Altidore’s header on to
Michael Bradley showed both, and if
Altidore showed how to combine the
two, Bradley showed us how to perfect
it.! It was a fantastic touch with the
bottom of his boot and we were back on
terms!!
It was enough to make you grateful that
you had gotten a point from 2-0 down.
Or it was, until Koman Coulibaly became
a household name by denying Maurice
Edu a well-earned winner.! I should have
been pleased, but I wasn’t.! I should
have taken the performance as a
positive, but I couldn’t.! We had been
robbed of two points by an obviously
wrong call, and I was gutted.! Even
though we still controlled our destiny I
still felt as if the US had been hard done,
an all too frequent theme in World Cup
play it seemed.
Heading into the final game, our inability
to play a full 90 minutes caused me
concern.! More than anything else, the

US needed a fast, aggressive start to
the match with Algeria.! By kick-o"
time on the morning of the 23rd, my
nerves and excitement reached a
simultaneous peak.! We started on
the ascendency just as we had
against Slovenia, giving an incredible
e"ort.! Even as Algeria sat back to try
and absorb the pressure, it felt like it
was only a matter of time until we
put one in the back of the net.!
Instead we got a roller-coaster
moment when Dempsey slammed
home a good ball from Gomes, only
to have it disallowed for apparent
o"side.! After replays, it looked like
once again, we had had a good goal
stolen away from us.! Thoughts of
conspiracy started running in my head.!
However, as time wore on, I could not
use that as an excuse, given the number
of chances we wasted.! Altidore’s e"ort
over the bar, Dempsey’s curler o" the
post and subsequent o"-target rebound
try, and Bradley’s thundering free-kick
saved were all heart-wrenching misses.!
I began to think we would not be able to
grab a goal to save the game and our
World Cup.! As time ticked away, my
thoughts went lower and lower.! I even
said, “This is it”, expecting Algeria to
score as the cross Tim Howard collected
was played in.! No sooner had I said
that, the play was going back the other
way, with Donovan spearheading the
attack started from Howard’s brilliant
throw.! As the ball was played into the
box and then came to rest in the area, I
was hoping with everything I had that
someone was making a following run up
the middle.! As Donovan came tearing
into the area, my heart skipped; then it
was bedlam.! I was screaming my head
o" with my non-football-fan friend, who
was as excited as me, and immediately,
it all turned around.! Surely we had just
won the game!! Surely we were going
through, and as group winners to boot!!
I couldn’t contain my excitement as the
final whistle blew, celebrating just as
hard as I celebrated Chelsea’s Double.
Finally, US Soccer had its moment, the
moment when an entire nation was
behind our team, the moment when
people were captivated by the sport.!

TEL'S MONTH IN QUESTION

Welcome to the start of hopefully
another Premiership-winning season.
I've decided to change it up a little this
season, so instead of doing a specific
year I thought I would do!highlights and
lowlights on!one of our opponents for
the Month in Question, especially if we
have some kind of tie to them. This
month we have West Brom coming into
town, so I picked them as their manager
is none other than Roberto Di Matteo.
As!I have said in the past if anyone has

do have a bit of history
with the good ol' boing

1960-61 season. Our team that day was

crowd of just 19,568, Brabrook, Greaves

CHELSEA LEGEND:
Being as we are playing West Brom, it’s
only fitting that our first Chelsea legend
is Roberto Di Matteo. Robbie will always
be in the Chelsea Legends for “that” goal
after 43 seconds in the FA Cup final, but
there was more to him than that. He
scored other great goals including a
semi-final sizzler in Luca Vialli’s first
game as coach. I think that was the
hardest I had ever seen a ball hit! Robbie
was Swiss by birth. He was actually Swiss
Player of the Year in 1993. He was a very
tough but yet still agile midfielder who
linked the defenders and forwards very
well. He chipped in with 26 goals in 175
games for Chelsea, scored in three cup
finals for us and went on to gain 34 caps
for Italy. Chelsea won six trophies in his
time with us - the FA Cup twice, League
cup, European Cup Winners Cup, the
Super Cup and! a Charity Shield. A badly
broken leg against Swiss side St. Gallen
in September 2000 would eventually end
his career and in Feb 2002, he decided
to retire. Robbie gave us many happy
memories!during his career at Chelsea,
including the celebration after scoring
the winner (and his first goal for us)
against Middlesboro in front of the West

David Webb is the only defender for

How did you become Chelsea, and when?
In 2003 I was exposed for the first time to
a full season of the Premier League. I didn't
care much for any of the other of the "big"
English clubs I had watched before (mainly
in the Champions League) so I decided to
follow the Chelsea games, considering they
were the only other team that looked like
they could challenge the "big" clubs. The
more I watched the more I became
obsessed with the team. Chelsea didn't win
any trophies that season - we finished 2nd
behind Arsenal and got knocked out of the
Champions League by Monaco, but I didn't
care by then because I was already hooked.
Who is your favorite first team player?
Michael Essien. He is one of a kind and
simply cannot be replaced.
Have you ever been to Stamford Bridge,
do you have a favorite memory?
Yes, I've seen two games at the Bridge, the
most recent one and my favorite memory is
the 7-1 thrashing of Aston Villa last March.
If you could have any player from any
other team play for Chelsea, who would
it be?
Joe Cole! We should've never let him go.
What is your favorite Chelsea song?
Wherever we be, we follow our team, cause
we are the Chelsea and we are supreme

CIA FAREWELL TO JULIANO BELLETTI
On Wednesday, 9 June Chelsea FC
announced that Juliano Belletti would be
leaving the club. The move came as no
surprise as we had all read that Chelsea
was looking to allow some of the
younger players the opportunity to earn
a spot on the first team. His move will
not cause the emotional reaction with
the fans that Joe Cole’s has, but he will
be sadly missed.!
In August of 2007 Chairman Bruce Buck
was determined that Chelsea “would not
be held ransom” in the transfer market.
At the time, the front o#ce felt that
there was one transfer price for Chelsea
and another price for everybody else.
The first few games of the 2007 season
saw a rotating cast at Right Back with
Paulo Ferreira, Glen Johnson and Michael
Essien all earning starts. Jose Mourinho
was desperate for a full-time right back
and Chelsea was heavily linked to
Sevilla’s Daniel Alves. Once Chelsea had
a reported £21.5 million bid for Alves
was rejected, they quickly signed Belletti
for the much lower price of £3.7
million . !
After Mourinho’s departure the following
month, Belletti was a regular starter at
CIA FAREWELL TO JOE COLE by Allison Kasic
For me and many other Chelsea
supporters the most painful moment of
the summer transfer season was
watching our favorite number 10 Joey
Cole leave Stamford Bridge in a free
move to Liverpool.! Joey was a player,
after all, that was “here, there, and every
*#@^-ing where” for Chelsea for seven
years.! In that time Cole appeared 282
times, scoring 39 goals and architecting
many more sizzling attacks.
Cole arrived in the summer of 2003 from
West Ham United as one of the first
signings in the Abramovich era.! Cole
proved his versatility by playing in a
variety of attacking roles for the Blues
over the years.! No matter where he was
on the pitch, Joey was sure to brighten
up any game with his high energy and
lightning-fast pace.! With his creativity,
work rate and penchant for scoring
against Manchester United, Joey was
destined to be a fan favorite.
Cole had many memorable moments in
Right Back in Avram Grant’s Chelsea
lineup. He earned himself a name less
for his reliable defending than his ability
to excite the crowd with spectacular
long-range goals. His e"orts that year
against Wigan and Spurs guaranteed his
cult like status with the fans. (Chelsea
supporters voted his goal against Spurs
as "Chelsea Goal of the Season" in 2007–
08.)!
2008-2009 brought both Jose Bosingwa
and Luis Felipe Scolari to Chelsea FC.
Scolari favored Bosingwa at Right Back
and Belletti was used as a utility player,
either in the holding role or in midfield. I
always met his substitute appearances
with a smile and a little fist pump. He
his time at Chelsea and was rewarded
for his outstanding work with the Player
of the Year award in the 2007-08
season.! But it is the handful of clutch
goals that Joey scored against
Manchester United in our recent title
campaigns that I will never forget.
A high point for any Chelsea supporter
was the spectacular 3-0 thumping of
Manchester United at the Bridge in April
2006 that secured our second
consecutive league title.! Cole provided
the best moment of the match at the

provided us with another breathtaking
long-range goal against Middlesbrough,
and my personal favorite Belletti
moment, a last minute equalizer against
Stoke. !
This past season’s performances will not
be remembered with the same fondness
as previous years. After missing part of
the season with an injury picked up
against Preston in the FA Cup, his
Premier League appearances were
irregular. He saw red for a clumsy
professional foul on Gareth Barry in a
dismal Chelsea performance against
Manchester City, and he gave away a
penalty against Portsmouth in the FA
Cup final that luckily was saved.!
Juliano Belletti was never the best player
on the field and his absence will be
noted only by the Chelsea faithful. His
time at Chelsea FC will be remembered
for his reliable defending, his versatility,
and his electrifying long-range goals.
Since leaving our beloved club, Belletti
has signed a two-year contract in his
native Brazil for Fluminense FC. I am
sure he’ll win over the hearts of their
supporters as he has done ours. Best of
luck Juliano.

rocket of a shot.! It was a spectacular
individual performance in an already
memorable match.
Cole only scored one goal in 2010, but it
couldn’t have come at a better time.! As
the season was winding down we once
again found ourselves in a close race
with United for the league title.! An away
win at Old Tra"ord is always a tall order,
and it’s even more challenging when a
title hangs in the balance.! But thanks in
part to Cole’s brilliant back heel touch at
the twenty minute mark o" a low cross
from Florent Malouda, Chelsea beat the
Red Devils 2-1 and went on to win the
double a few weeks later.! That delicate
touch wasn’t Cole’s flashiest goal, but it
was one of his most important for the
club and I can’t help but think that it was
a parting gift for us fans.

CHELSEA SUPPORTERS CLUB TOURNAMENT: COBHAM, ENGLAND

summer; I know, why
would I go all that way
when there were no
Chelsea games to see?!

I did the next best
thing and got myself
along to the training
ground at Cobham as
a referee at the annual
Chelsea Supporters Tournament.
! !
Dazz on the CFCNet board (http://
www.cfcnet.co.uk/) was arranging a
team, and he passed my name along to
the tournament organizer, Cli" Auger.
So, on World Cup Final Day, July 11th, I
arrived at 9am at Cobham, where
security was tight.
First o", I met a couple of other referees
and then had a reunion with Steve ‘Jock’
Finnieston, who I had met on the US
Summer Tour 2009. I also met Gareth

Michael Ballack wasn't a universally
beloved Chelsea player like Joe Cole
while he was here. He also didn't
develop a cult-like fanbase like Juliano
Belletti. Michael Ballack didn't quite live
up to the expectations that Chelsea fans
had, yet he was one of my favorite
players in Blue for the past few years.
When Ballack's contract at Bayern Munich
ended in 2006, he chose to sign for
Chelsea and Jose Mourinho despite
interest from clubs like Real Madrid and
A.C. Milan. Injury constantly hampered
his career with the Blues, but he did
have perhaps his brightest spell in the
second half of the 2007/08 season
under Avram Grant. He captained the
side several times in the absence of JT
and Frank Lampard and scored some
important goals. One of his most
memorable performances in those few
months was against Manchester United
at the Bridge on April 26, 2008, scoring
two goals (and dedicating the win to
Super Frank, whose mum had just died)
to keep us in the title race that season.
He'll also be best remembered for his
Hall, Colin Pates and Clive
Walker, who all shared the

graciously signed my flag

The only one of me is the first one, with
Clive Walker and Gareth Hall.! You can
tell it’s me because I was smart enough
to wear a big hat to keep the sun

Cobham is very impressive, with over 30
pitches. We were allocated four fields on
the edge of the complex and the grass
was quite brown due to England’s driest
angry rant at Tom Henning Ovrebo
(spit!) after our Champions League
semifinal defeat against Barcelona.
People can criticize him now for
overreacting, but really, wasn't he just
acting out what we all were screaming at
our television screens?
Half of the fans felt he was useless, the
other half felt he was underrated and
unappreciated. I always thought he was
a great leader of the team along with JT,
Frank and Drogba. When JT would give
interviews about some of the guys
leading the team talks pre-match, he
would always mention "Bally" helping to
rally the team spirit. He was a passionate
player and seemed to really love the

summer for 71 years.
At the end of the day, I refereed the

We were all hot and tired, but I met a lot
of great Chelsea fans, helped raise 200
pounds for the Help a London Child
charity and was very glad I went.

thus many Chelsea fans never really took
to him.
The phrase "always the bridesmaid" was
often used in reference to Ballack, so
happily he finally won a league title in
England in what would be his last season
at Chelsea. So, whether you like it or
not, Ballack has his name engraved in
the history books for an incredible
double-winning 2009/10 season.
