HUSH-HUSH: DEVELOPER SOUGHT CHANGES

Maybe its time to call a mis-
trial on the courthouse deal.
Progress appears deadlocked
and it appears evidence has
been withheld from the jury
otherwise known as the Com-
munity Board.
For those new to Rockaway,
theres a building at Beach 90-
01 Beach Channel Drive, which
seems like its part of the mov-
ie Groundhog Day, in which a
character is stuck in a time loop
and lives through and repeats
the same day, every day. In this
never-changing story, the main
character is what is known as
the old Rockaway Courthouse.
Still managing to be stately
and iconic on the outside, the
building is doing nothing other
than celebrating its 40th anni-
versary as an unused, neglect-
ed symbol of untapped poten-
tial.

building into a state-of-the-art
medical center. The City an-
nounced that it would transfer
the property for $50,000 with

$10 million in a major over-
haul. A group of doctors were
to be the main leaseholders.
Local elected officials hailed
the news.
But nothing happened for al-
most two years. On March 6,
2015 the property was final-
ly transferred to the new in-
vestors. Just two months lat-
er, however, Uri Kaufman of
Harmony emailed the EDC to

emails (secured through
a Freedom of Information
Request by The Rockaway
Times) reveal that Kaufman
proposed the courthouse be
used for childcare and Uni-
versal pre-K. There was also
language about having a med-
ical tenant but no ambulato-
ry surgery.
The email exchanges indi-
cated there was no pushback
from the City on the new di-
rection. David Eisenman of
the EDC told Kaufman that
once EDC reviewed and ap-
proved changes, Kaufman
would have to go back to
the Community Board and
present the updated project
before we could finalize any
modifications of our deed
covenants.
Which has never happened.
Community Board 14 has
never been fully informed or
updated on changes, accord-
ing to CB14 Chair Dolores Orr.
In fact, Orr said on Tuesday,
that the Community Board
is on record opposing child-
care or school as a use for the
building.
At one point, the EDC
seemed concerned about the
Community Board. In Octo-
ber 2015 Eisenman emailed
Kaufman: We received from
an inquiry from CB14 about
the status of the project. As we
have discussed, please check
in with us before discussing
the child-care use publicly.
We will get back to you this
week with proposed talking
points on the project status if
that is OK.
The proposed talking
points never quite went pub-
lic. In fact, a month later, in
November 2015, Kaufman
told The Rockaway Times that
plans were before the Build-
ings Department and that he
hoped to break ground in the
spring of 2016. He was con-
sulting with a general con-
tractor and a Space for Rent
sign was installed on the
building. At the time, Kauf-
man did not indicate that the
plans were for anything other
than a medical center.

Two months later, in ear-
ly January 2016, EDC asked
Kaufman in an email if he had
made any progress on con-
struction financing. Later
that month, T.K. Franz, who
had taken over for Eisenman
for EDC, emailed Kaufman
stating, Im trying to buy
as much time I can but well
need a financing commit-
ment soon. Any luck on the
leasing end?
Kaufman replies: No
change on the leasing front.
We have someone that's ex-
pressed strong interest but we
won't have anything firm for
60-90 days.
This exchange makes clear
that almost three years af-
ter being awarded the court-
house, the developer did not
have tenants lined up.
Days later, Franz becomes
a bit more concerned. Uri: I
cant stall on your behalf an-
ymore. A meeting has been
called to discuss the status
of your project today. As you
know according to the deed
you are in violation of the 75
percent leased covenant and fi-
nancing covenant. I really hope
your bank can come through
for you.
Kaufman asks if EDC will ap-
prove a daycare to be run in the
basement.
Franz replies: I cant go to
the Board asking for the school
in the basement approval
while youre in violation of the
financing covenant.
Kaufman replies that he
has a financing option with
terms that arent great and
is rounding third base with a
Department of Buildings per-
mit.
Although this is almost nine
months after Kaufman first
alerted EDC that the medical
doctors were out and that an
alternative use was suggested,
Franz seems to be catching up.
In February 2016 Frantz asks
what the space will be used for
under the new proposal.
He then quotes the original:

minimum of 10,000 square feet
is to be used for the provision
of medical services. The pro-
ject shall contain a minimum
of three operating rooms and
one procedure room. It is an-
ticipated there will be multiple
pre-operation and recovery
rooms, as well as laboratory,
pharmacy facilities.
Although Franz is just get-
ting up to speed, it is clear that
the medical center proposal
which was instrumental in get-
ting Harmony the property for
just $50,000 was no longer in
the works.
By March 2016 an email re-
vealed that a daycare, Harmo-
ny Kids, was one planned use.
Harmony Kids, according to
Kaufman, was a separate entity
from the Harmony Group that
originally secured the proper-
ty. In a later email, Kaufman
identified himself as a 99 per-
cent owner in Harmony Kids.
In addition to Harmony Kids,
Kaufman was seeking other
tenants and identified a com-
pany called Rockaway Fast
Health & Rad as a potential
tenant.
In June of last year, The
Rockaway Times asked Kauf-
man if there was any news on
the building. No, but soon,
was his reply. In September,
The Rockaway Times inquired
again. Any news? Unfortu-
nately, no. On Tuesday of this
week, more than four years af-
ter the City chose Harmony to
transform the courthouse, we
asked Kaufman if there was any
news to report. He said in an
email Expecting something
very, very soon.
Neither the EDC nor Harmo-
ny ever made public the news
that the courthouse might be
used as anything other than a
medical center. Of course, such
a use is hardly a community
need now. In the years since
the courthouse was awarded to
the Harmony Group, construc-

tion on another medical center
is well underway on Beach
105th Street and Rockaway
Beach Boulevard.
When Harmony struck a deal
with the City, it had construc-
tion deadlines to meet. Its clear
such deadlines were never met.
We asked EDC why Kaufman
retains control. We asked why
not retake possession and put
out a new Request for Propos-
als (especially since a medical
center is no longer needed and
a daycare was rejected by the
Community Board).
The EDC Public Affairs re-
sponse was hardly illuminat-
ing: We are working with the
development team to acti-
vate and revitalize this histor-
ic property. While one of the
original tenants left the project,
the team that was originally
awarded the development re-
mains intact. Also, the project
involved a land sale, so the
property is currently privately
owned.
Regarding the use of the site,
we remain committed to work-
ing with local stakeholders and
seeing the former courthouse
brought back to life in a way
that will serve the Rockaway
community.
The "privately owned" aspect
seemed a bit curious. We asked
the EDC: They got a building
for $50,000 simply because
they promised to put millions
into it. And if they fail to do
so?
The EDC spokesperson said,
The deed also requires the
owner to comply with specif-
ic construction milestones.
There are also safeguards that
would allow the City to take
stronger action against the
owner if deed provisions are
not met.
In a call right before press
time, an EDC official insisted
no modifications have been
made to the original plan or
deed and that Uri Kaufman
was still searching for poten-
tial tenants and the courthouse
was still set to be a medical
center. And yes, EDC would
alert Community Board 14 if
any modification were likely to
get City approval.
So what will happen? We'll
have to wait (as we usually do
when it comes to the court-
house).

Development Boom: Whats Going Up?

Construction fences, heavy
machinery and scaffolding dot
the peninsula as many curious
passerby wonder, whats going
on here? In the past few years,
a development boom has taken
place on the peninsula. From
hotels to medical offices to res-
idential buildings, Rockaway
continues to rise higher.
In the past few years, de-
velopers have come to know
what residents have known for
much longer. Living in a little
paradise by the sea, with Man-
hattan just a bus, train, and
now ferry ride away, is a pretty
sweet deal. Investors and de-
velopers have been taking a
chance on Rockaway, resulting
in a residential building boom.
Last summer, a brick residen-
tial building at 93-06 Shore
Front Parkway was completed
and a city housing lottery for
the apartments starting as low
as $690, closed by the end of
the year, with thousands ap-
plying for just 63 spots. Now

many more developments are
in the works.
In Arverne, Arverne by the
Sea (ABTS) has been develop-
ing the area for more than a
decade and they recently broke
ground on another big piece
of the puzzleThe Tides. This
most recent development in
the Beach 60s will consist of
214 market-rate rental units
within two mid-rise build-
ings, plus commercial space
and ground-level parking. The
units will range from studios
to three bedrooms, with luxu-
ry apartments on upper levels.
The first building of this pro-
ject is expected to be complete
by spring 2018. By the time the
whole ABTS development is
complete, it will be made up of
2,300 housing units.
In Rockaway Beach, anoth-
er residential building devel-
opment is taking place. The
29-unit, 40-foot building at
142 Beach 96th Street was sup-
posed to be completed by April
2016, but the apparent skele-
ton of the building shows a lot

Fires during Hurricane Sandy
may have burnt down the area
around Beach 114th and Rock-
away Beach Boulevard, but it
will soon be revitalized with
the completion of another
new residential building. Lo-
cal resident Dino Tomassetti of
Laquila group purchased the
property in 2015. The build-
ing in progress will contain 54
residential units, with two re-
tail units, and a medical and
community facility. According
to Laquila Group, this project
should be done by November
of this year. Irene Tomassetti
of Laquila says now is the per-
fect time to invest in Rockaway.
We feel that Rockaway is really
being revitalized. It has a lot of
new things going on and it has
become even more accessible
because of the ferry. Its really
on the upswing and has a good
future.

with One Sixteen. The Marcal
Group is getting ready to break
ground on the first part of this
development, an 8-story build-
ing with 90 condos and com-
mercial space on the ground
floor. Mark Caller, principal of
the Marcal Group expects to
break ground on this building
at the former Beach Club site
by the end of the month. The
other projects as part of this
development by the Marcal
Group include a building of 60-
70 affordable rental units for
seniors on Beach 117th Street.
Two other residential build-
ings, one on the east side of
Beach 116th Street, and anoth-
er facing Beach 115th Street,
wont be developed for at least
another two years.
In addition to places to live,
Rockaway will be getting some
new places to stay. In August
2015, Mike McMahon pur-
chased the Rogers Pub build-
ing and announced plans to

turn the upstairs portion of
the building into a hotel, like
it was in its heyday. The space
would allow for as many as 28
hotel rooms. The RT reached
out to McMahon for the latest
on this development, only to
find that the plan is on hold.
The hotel is on hold for now,
but we hope to have it up by the
100th anniversary of Rogers
in 2019, McMahon said. We
also inquired about some other
McMahon properties, includ-
ing the site of the old Bryans
Auto across from St. Camil-
lus. As for this, there are on-
going negotiations to bring in
a martial arts school at this
property, but McMahons
longterm plans are to devel-
op the site and bring in 30
condos. McMahon says Rock-
away is ideal for developers
because its still the cheap-
est place in the city to invest
and its a great community,
he said. Now with the ferry,
its even easier to get to the
city. Its made a great impact
on business and has been
fantastic for Rockaway. Rog-

for the Tubridy-owned Rock-
away Beach Hotel coming to

cation of the cell tower at the
site has held up plans, but
the family believes the issue

the meantime, the Blvd Pro-
ject and beer garden at the
site have been keeping fer-
ry crowds and locals enter-
tained for the summer.
With the increase of visitors
and residents over the years,

Another construction pro-
ject that some may be curious
about? The Harbor Light. The
beloved Belle Harbor restau-
rant was destroyed by fire dur-
ing Hurricane Sandy. Signifi-
cant progress has been made
on the building, but the com-
pletion is still up in the air. The
completion date remains un-
certain because an entity called
the Board of Standards and
Appeals must first review and
rule on the building applica-
tion. Such a review is still some
months away. Heres to hoping
its sooner than later.

responded to reports of a
missing swimmer last Sun-
day afternoon. Fortunately,
it was just a rumor and no life
saving was required. Still,

of things to watch out for on

meters using the ParkNYC
app, if you move your car to

you will be ticketed. And weve
mentioned this before but its
worth another warning. You
might get ticketed if you drive
over the cobblestone at the end
of 116th instead of staying on
the blacktop. We figure its a
ticket worth fighting. There are
no street markings (white lines
or arrows) and cobblestone
streets exist in other parts of
the city. Whos to say the cob-
blestone isnt part of the street

Far Rock Street Renamed

For Fallen Officer
and fellow NYPD officers,
gathered in Far Rockaway to
pay their respects to Detec-
tive Holder, who was killed on
duty in an incident along the
FDR Drive in October 2015.
Holder was pursuing a sus-
pect who had stolen a bicycle
when he was shot in the head
by the suspect. This past April,
the shooter was sentenced to
life in prison.
Holder was a Guyanese
immigrant and a third gen-
eration cop who called Far
Rockaway home. The newly
renamed street is across the
street from his familys resi-
dence.

street, but that is totally unfair.
They live here, and rely on this
plaza for food, medical necessi-
ties, clothes and a lot more. We

in Hammels, Dayton Towers,
other residents from east and
west ends of the area who all
come here for their shopping
needs and of course, our visi-

improved, especially in light of

Time is running out to check
out a movie under the stars.
Over the first few weeks of
summer, locals and visitors
have been able to enjoy out-
door films on the beach, in
parks, or at local establish-
ments. There are just a few
weeks left until Labor Day, but
still plenty of films in the line-
up.
For the past few summers,
the Rockaway Civic Associa-
tion has brought us Beach Flix.
Each week, they show movies
at different locations along the
beach, with the help of various
sponsors. Bring a beach chair
or towel and enjoy family films
right after sundown (around 8
p.m.). Coming up, on Thurs-
day, August 10, Kong Skull Is-
land will be shown on Beach
121st Street. On Friday, Au-
gust 18, The Secret Life of Pets
will be shown on Beach 73rd
Street. On Thursday, August
24, Star Wars: Rogue One will
play on Beach 125th Street.
Some of the sponsors of these
films include Caracas, Coast-
al Frozen Yogurt, Healys Pub,
Jamesons, Boardwalk Bagel,
Arverne by the Sea and more.
The Parks Department has
also been hosting outdoor
films. On Sunday, August 13,
the film, Fences starring Den-

at Beach 59th Street Play-
ground at 8 p.m. On Sunday,
August 20, at the Beach 94th

Dear Editor:
I am a 12-and-a-half-year-
old resident of Rockaway and
I feel like the ferry was a very
good addition to the Rock-
away community. The ferry
has helped many Rockaway
businesses. The people come
from the ferry and walk to the
beach or take the shuttle to
different areas of Rockaway.
Also the ferry has made com-
muting to and from work so
much easier. The ferry brings
people from the city and other
places to our neighborhood.
Even though it brings more
the locks. They need to have
more police to try to stop
crime. I think they should
have more ferries at rush
hour and at times when the
most people are coming and
leaving the beach. Also in
the winter I think they don't
need as many boats because
it will mostly be commuters.
Overall the ferry can be good
and bad for Rockaway.

my wife for cash. Why is this

A Piece of History Lost

Rockaway has lost a local
icon. Constantine Dean
Georges died peacefully
on Tuesday, August 1. He
was 81.
Born on June 26, 1936
to Ann and John Georg-
es, Georges was a lifetime
Rockaway resident who
loved this peninsula. He
was born in Rockaway
Beach Hospital and grew
up on Beach 98th Street.
He attended P.S. 44, P.S.
43 and graduated from Far
Rockaway High School in
1954. Young Dean grew
up around the family busi-
nesses. He would sit at
the counter and help his
parents at Georges Hot
Dog Stand. He spent some
time away from Rockaway
after studying horticulture
at SUNY Farmingdale,
when he joined the U.S.
Army. However, upon re-
turning to the peninsula,
he jumped right back in
and joined the other fam-
ily business, Georges Flo-
rist on Beach 116th Street.
Many on the peninsu-
la came to know Georges
for helping them with any
special occasion, whether
it was a wedding, birthday,
holiday, funeral, prom or
just because. For more
than 40 years he helped
put smiles on the faces of
his beloved customers by
pecially children. Anytime
a customer came in to the
shop with a child, hed
bend down and ask them
what their favorite color
was before disappearing
into the walk-in refriger-
ator and returning with a
flower for the young cus-
tomer. Then hed take the
grown-ups floral order.
Aside from spreading
happiness through flow-
ers, Georges was involved
in the community in
many other ways. He once
served as president of the
Rockaway Rotary, and as

dren, John, Jennifer, Rob-
ert and Chris Georges, and
his granddaughters, Ella
Grace, Edie Blake and Na-
talie Ann.

How to tips:
Most wood burning kits will
come with instructions, but here
are a few tips that most won't in-
clude:
1- Always practice first on
scrap wood.
2- Always burn your outer de-
signs first, before working on the
fill of the design.
3- Use light colored, unstained
wood for your projects, then
stain or coat with a light colored
or clear stain/coat.
4- Practice layering. Layering
the fill area of your design can
make the difference in how
your project comes out.
5- Take your time. Wood
burning is a timely, detailed
art. Rushing it will reflect the
final project.
6- Experiment. Wood burn-
ing kits come with an assort-
ment of tips for a reason. Fa-
miliarize yourself with the tips,
the look you get with each tip
and using each tip on different
angles. One project can require
using one or as many as six tips.
7- Age recommendations.
Kits start with a recommend-
ed age of 10+ years old. Wood
burning tools can be danger-
ous, I recommend adult super-
vision for anyone 14 years old or
younger.

Boardwalk End Blossoms

Beach Wall is blossoming
thanks to The Shore Garden
Club. On Saturday, July 15, the
Garden Club installed a beach
wall garden at the beach wall
at the end of the boardwalk as
part of the Rockaway Civic As-
sociations (RCA) Beach Block
Garden Restoration Project,
which has been planting beach
gardens along the beach walls
in Rockaway all summer.
The Parks Department has
given permission to the RCA
to plant and maintain these
gardens. The club volunteered
to be the steward for Beach
126th Street. Club member
and landscape architect, Alex
Berkowitz, created a plan for
a seaside garden filled with
ecologically sensitive plants,
which would survive in the
sandy soil and severe heat.
These plants will help control
sand erosion and provide cov-
er for various birds.

FROM THE RBA: ARE YOU ON COMBRR?

Perhaps you were standing on
a jam-packed Broad Channel
platform this past Sunday morn-
ing, along with hordes of other
excited beachgoers, awaiting
the S train that would take you
to New York Citys favorite local
paradise, otherwise known as
Rockaway Beach.
As you stood in the sun, per-
haps chatting with a friend, you
may have been approached by a
young man, who handed you a
piece of paper.
Excuse me, he might have
said. I dont mean to interrupt,
I just wanted to pass along some
information about a new beach
delivery service in the Rockaways
called Combrr.
Now its possible that you car-
ried that flyer with you all the way
to the beach, where you plopped
yourself down in the sand and
immediately downloaded the
Combrr app.
But, more likely than not, that
flyer ended up crumpled at the
bottom of your beach bag, un-
derneath a soggy towel, some
smushed grapes and a 6-pack of
Bud Lite Lime.
Each day we get inundated with
information about things we should
buy, articles we should read, and
apps we should download nowa-
days it seems like theres an app for
everything. So why does the Rock-
away Business Alliance think that
Combrr is so great?
As many of you know, part of
the RBAs proposal for the Neigh-
borhood Challenge Grant allo-
cates funding toward market-
ing Combrr, an app that allows
beachgoers to order delivery di-
rectly to the beach.
One of our main goals as the
RBA is to support Rockaway
businesses by helping them con-
nect with potential customers.
As businesses in Rockaway are
well aware, summertime beach-
goers are a massive (and quickly
expanding!) market. In fact, it
would be challenging for Rocka-
way businesses to be successful
without reaching this market.
When the RBA was drafting its
proposal for the Neighborhood
Challenge Grant, we spent a long
time mulling over the challenge
of connectivity: how do we con-
nect businesses to customers?
How do we encourage beachgo-
ers to leave the beach and explore
the wide variety of businesses on
the peninsula?
And then we discovered Com-
brr. Instead of bringing the beach-
goers to the businesses, Com-
brr brings the businesses to the
beachgoers, a (we think) brilliant
solution for an ongoing penin-
sula-wide challenge that circum-
vents the task of asking apathetic
beachgoers to get off their bums
and trek out to the corridors.
And Combrr isnt just for food
delivery! You can order whatever
you need, from beach-towels to
sunscreen.
But dont just let us tell you
about Combrr! Heres a loyal cus-

"I couldn't believe how quick

and in half the time it would

hundreds of millions of dollars of

Summer always seems to
come upon us quickly and be-
fore you know it, Fourth of July
is here. The beginning of the
summer is busy: making plans
for all sorts of activities, cele-
brations, reunions, get-togeth-
ers. That has all been done!
Now is the time to rest. When I
first started dealing with Italy
for business and then visiting,
on holiday, I loved the fact
that everything closed in Au-
gust! It is changing now, but
one whole month was devoted
to rest, relaxation and holiday.
I think it is so great to have
that embedded in a culture.

After this period, something
new begins. Every time we

ning in the fall and the hustle
and bustle of school, new work
projects, holiday planning, etc.

Local Youth Get Waves of Joy Through Surfing

Every morning for the last
two months, a group of lo-
cal children eagerly rise and
shine, gulp down their break-
fast, and in feverish excite-
ment, make a beeline for
Beach 123rd Street.
The lure? Free surfing in-
struction from 8 a.m. to 10:30
a.m. with their beloved in-
structor, Mr. Louis.
Louis Harris, founder of the
Black Surfing Association-East
Coast, meets with this eager
flock of children hailing from
all over the peninsula, all
thrilled at the opportunity to
get back on a board and learn
to surf.
According to 10-year-old
Adanya Gabourels dad, surf-
ing has become an addiction
for his daughter. I cancelled
three family trips that I al-
ready paid for this summer
because Adanya did not want
to miss surfing with Mr. Lou-
is. For these kids, surfing has
become a healthy addiction.
Without my prompting, she
wakes up at 6 a.m., excited to
go surf. We live in Bayswater,
and make the trek up to Beach
123rd every morning with her
board in tow. Adanya wants to
be on a surfboard in the water
all the time. Its all she talks
about.
Its amazing what Mr. Lou-
is does. No money involved,
hes here every morning just
to teach and share his love
for surfing with children. He
could be doing a million oth-
er things at this time, and he
definitely could be charging a
lot of dough for this like the
other local surf instructors.
But no, he is out there in the
water with them, freely giving
his time every day, providing
that the weather conditions
are safe and suitable for the
children, said Gabourels dad.
As for Adanya, already ath-
letic in build with a radiant
smile, surfing is her passion.
After the first time I went out
surfing, I was hooked. Though
I have been surfing only two
months, my parents saw my
passion, and bought me a
board and wetsuit. This is
what I really want to do. When
I am in the ocean, I feel like I
am in paradise. When I catch
a wave, I feel like I won and
accomplished something. My
first time out in the water, I was
scared, but Mr. Louis boosted
my confidence, and he made
me want to keep going out and

117 Shack edged out 135 in
a thrilling lifeguard softball
championship by a score of
8-7. The two lifeguard shacks
met in the championship for
the third consecutive year, in
a game that was initially called
off due to weather. The reign-
ing champs from 135 put up six
runs in the final inning but fell
short as all-star shortstop Jack
Hurley caught an infield fly to
seal the deal.
Both teams couldnt help but
think back to the top of the first,
when Billy Dunn of 135 failed
to tag up on a long fly ball to
117 captain, Jimmy Buckley. In
a post-game interview, Dunn
explained that he thought
there were two outs. He was
wrong, and one couldnt help
but ponder the possibility that
he was still concussed from the
infamous slap heard round
the rock two weeks prior.
In a season plagued with
attendance issues, 117 made
an improbable run. The team
was in jeopardy of missing

missed several key games while
partying with his Marine Park
bros at his Jersey Shore rental.
Captain Buckley knew some-
thing had to be done to salvage
the season for the chief. It all
turned around when Buckley,
and senior lifeguard Bobby
Butler visited Lisa at JKS Print-
ing. The team ordered stylish
powdered blue jerseys and
never looked back.
While the team went unde-
feated after purchasing the
magical jerseys, it was no easy
road. Seventh inning woes
and Houdini-like escapes
became the norm for Rocka-
ways flagship shack. The team
pulled a game-ending triple
play against 106 Shack in the
semi-finals with the winning
run on first. Poor base run-
ning, and a lack of baseball
I.Q., cost 106 the game.
Similarly, the team allowed
six runs in the seventh after
bringing an 8-1 lead to the fi-
nal inning of the champion-
ship. Veteran pitcher Lt. Kev
buckled down and got the
outs the team needed. These
kids dont know how to close
a game. Their entire gener-
ation is weak-minded, he
ranted as he walked off the
mound frustrated despite
winning it all.
I met up with Bobby But-
ler, who went 8 for 8 with six
runs in the postseason. Af-
ter getting him to put down
his trombone, he expressed
his joy for the shack. Emma
Meade played a solid sea-
son in the outfield and at the
plate with her patented line-
drives up the middle. Despite
the absence of the rising surf
diva Thomas Tyne, the team
played a solid infield. The
season also had the debut
of rookie second baseman,
Buckley Horn, who happens
to be the younger brother of
the teams captain. He made
an incredible backhanded flip

Heats Up With Carnival

p.m., Zumba Under The Stars at
the hockey rink on Beach 108th,
hosted by zumba queen, Lisa
G. gets even hotter, as folks rev
up for Rockaways first annual
Caribbean Carnival. This Car-
nival-themed zumba party will
feature wild, frenetic live soca
music with USA Soca Monarch
finalist, Simeon Dillon. As Dil-
lon pelts out hot soca tunes
on the hockey rink, join in by
wearing colorful carnival head
pieces provided for free and
zumba-cize alongside a man on
mile-high stilts, (referred to as a
moko jumbie). Bring a towel and
get ready to wave and jump up to
the infectious soca music.

what would have been the
game-winning out on a rou-
tine fly. Luckily for him, the
team won, saving him from
an eight-hour tour.
The team plans to enjoy its
second trophy in three years
with a free shack dinner at
Buckleys. Getting my folks
to treat us to a solid shack
dinner is the least I can do for
the infamous Shack of Fools,
a beaming Buckley declared.

We would like to start off by
thanking everyone that came
out to our All Star Game. It was
a big event that grew a crowd
of about a hundred people. A
special thanks goes out to the
Broad Channel Athletic Club
(BCAC) for hosting us this year.
As for the game, in a tourna-
ment-style matchup, the East
Division beat the West. Con-
gratulations to Jack Conneely
of the Knights of Columbus for
taking home the Mike Nolan
Award (All Star Game MVP). A
special shout out goes to Pete
Torres for donating his time
and going in the dunk tank.
Sunday wrapped up our reg-
ular reason. In a rematch of
last years championship, the
Mudsharks only gave up two
hits to Morning Wood (MW) as
they won 2-0 in Game 1. Play of
the day goes to Marty Feeney as
he turned a triple play against
the Sharks. MW bounced back
in Game 2 and won, 5-4. In the
battle of last place, the Orioles
won their second game of the
year beating the No-Shows
8-4. No-Shows fought back
in Game 2 and won 9-7 giv-
ing the Os the title for worst
team in the league. The Army
clinched a playoff spot by win-
ning by forfeit as nobody from
the Misfits even showed up to
the field. Poor sportsmanship
from the Misfits as they were
in 1st place a month ago then
dropped eight straight games,
and then didnt show the final
week of the year.

the two losses, the Knights
dropped from 2nd place in the
East down to 3rd. The Chug-
gernauts finished their season
strong winning their final four
games as they took two from
the Member Berries winning,
8-5 and 4-3. It is rumored that
the Chuggers are offering some
contracts to members of other
players in the league for next
season, so look for them to
bounce. In a big heated match-
up that started on Bookface
earlier in the week, the Kings
swept Old Head. After playing
Old Head the Kings had to play
The Army in a Week 1 make-
up. The Army scored six runs
in both games but that wasn't
enough as the Kings put up 12
and 18 to win a total of four
games on the day and move
into 2nd place in the West di-
vision.
Sunday starts our playoffs.

The Moneyballs and Morn-
ing Wood have the week off
for clinching 1st place in their
divisions. In the West Divi-
sion, the Kings and Mudsharks
square off in a rematch of Week
4 where the Kings swept the
Sharks. Both of these teams are
playing great ball and it might
take all three games to see
who will move on to face the
Moneyballs. Over in the East
Division, The Army will face
the Knights of Columbus with
the winner taking on Morning
Wood. These two teams just
played each other a week ago
with the Knights winning by
a walk off home run and then
The Army won by the mer-
cy rule. This matchup might

Felice is like my OG. She
was my first student, and with
her mom, Monique Hernan-
dezs help, we started attract-
ing other local kids. I love
teaching these kids how to
surf because its a way for me
to give back by sharing my
love of surfing. A lot of these
kids like Adanya and Felice,
all have their own surfboards
now, and that makes me hap-
py. I love that they have fallen
in love with surfing. Its like I
have a band of daughters and
sons now. Im not wealthy, but
in my mind, I feel rich know-
ing that I am giving back and
sharing my passion. These
are all great kids, and even if
they were bad kids, I know
that teaching them surfing
for a few hours every morning

she understands why people
flock to Rockaway just to surf.
I would see people surfing
near my house, and question
why they would go out every-
day, even in the wintertime!
But now that I am doing it, I
now understand why. Surfing
is magical, she said.
Jamie McLoughlin, mom
of 11-year-old Madison says,
Its so awesome and amazing
what Mr. Louis is doing with
these kids. He even teach-
es some kids skateboarding.
They should have more free
programs like this in the com-
munity. In Rockaway, there
really isnt anything for kids
to do. This keeps the chil-
dren busy and they love it. We
drive up here from Dayton in
Rockaway Beach. In Rocka-
way, we live near the water,
more water sports like this.
I never had experiences like
this when I was a kid, and I
have lived in Rockaway all my
life, McLoughlin said.
Harris says that he also
teaches the children about
water safety. The first thing
I teach the children is how
to identify a rip tide, Harris
said. As he was talking, he
asked Adanya to identify a rip
tide, which she confidently
did. When you see the water
converging, forming a funnel,
thats how you know its a rip
tide. A lot of people who both
live and visit Rockaway dont
know that. They get in the
water without knowing about
the dangers. Water safety and
respect for the ocean are par-
amount. I tell the children,
Never turn your back on the
ocean.
