Introduction to Natural Gas Engineering [GPE401] {Sheet # 1}

1- For a gas of the following composition:

Componemt CO2 Methane Ethane Propane i-Butane n-Butane
Mol % 0.40 94.32 3.90 1.17 0.08 0.13
Calculate:
a- The specific gravity, the density and the specific volume of the gas at 60 F and 14.65
psia.
b- The gas viscosity at 80 F and 40 psia in cP.
2- A natural gas has the following composition is at 400 psig and 80 F:
Component C1 C2 C3 i-C4 n-C4 C5 C6 C7+ N2 CO2
Mol % 87.09 4.42 1.60 0.40 0.52 0.46 0.29 0.06 4.76 0.40
Assume a molecular weight of C7+, the same as for C7
Calculate:
a- Weight percent of each component in the gas.
b- Apparent molecular weight of the gas.
c- Specific gravity of the gas.
d- The gas deviation factor.
e- Show whether it is possible to be liquefied by compression only or cooling is
necessary and why?
3- Calculate the viscosity of the following gas at reservoir conditions of 2500 psia and
180 F.
Component C1 C2 C3 H2S
Mole fraction 0.80 0.10 0.04 0.06

4- A casing annulus is filled with gas under the following conditions:

Gas gravity = 0.65 V = 1500 ft3 pav = 1000 psia Tav= 200 F
How much gas in standard cubic feet, must be removed to drop the pressure to 800 psia?
Assume gas behaves as a perfect gas.

5- 2 cubic feet tank contains propane at 1209 psig and 332 F; taking into account the
deviation from the gas laws, how many standard cubic feet of gas have been withdrawn
from the cylinder when the pressure has dropped to 602 psig and 332 F? Atmospheric
pressure is at 14.7 psia.

6- 2 cubic feet tank contains gas at 1000 psig and at 60 F. this tank is connected to another
tank of unknown volume containing the same gas at 14.7 psia and 60 F. the two tanks are
allowed to come to equilibrium, and when this is accomplished and pressure is 650 psig and
the temperature is 60 F. What is the volume of the tank? Atmospheric pressure is at 14.7
psia. Assume gas behaves as a perfect gas.
