PAINT REPAIR PROCEDURE Effective from: 1/1/17

The following repair procedures apply to systems when used to repair damaged coatings and weld areas suitable for small area repair or
welds for atmospheric exposure.

Nature of damaged coatings:

Damage to topcoat only


1. Remove any loose and flaking coating to a firm sound edge
2. Thoroughly clean and degrease area to be repaired
3. Feather back existing sound coating abrade area to be coated and surrounding area (5cm)
4. Ensure surface to be coated is dry and free from any contamination immediately prior to coating
(including any dust from abrading)
5. Re apply topcoat at specified dft overlapping existing sound system by about 5cm

Damage to intermediate coat


1. Remove any loose and flaking coating to a firm sound edge
2. Thoroughly clean and degrease area to be repaired
3. Feather back existing sound coating abrade area to be coated and surrounding area (5cm)
4. Ensure surface to be coated is dry and free from any contamination immediately prior to coating (including any dust
from abrading)
5. Re apply damaged intermediate and topcoats at specified dft overlapping existing sound system by about 5cm

Damage down to substrate (bare metal)


1. Remove any loose and flaking coating to a firm sound edge
2. Thoroughly clean and degrease area to be repaired
3. Feather back existing sound coating

Bare metal (1) if the original specified standard of cleanliness and profile is undamaged:
1. Ensure surface to be coated is dry and free from any contamination immediately prior to coating (including any dust
from abrading)
2. Re apply damaged primer, intermediate and topcoats at specified dft overlapping existing sound system by about 5cm

Bare metal (2) if surface is corroded, damaged or original specified standard of cleanliness and profile does
not exist:
1. For small areas Mechanically prepare to achieve ISO 8501: ST 3 standard of cleanliness with original specified profile.
Take care not to over polish a minimum profile of 30m is recommended
2. For large areas Re blast area to original specified standard of cleanliness and profile
3. Re apply damaged primer, intermediate and topcoats at specified dft overlapping existing sound system by about 5cm
4. For areas where new work has taken place e.g. welding then the area should re blasted to original standard
