1 Introduction
This document states the user manual of DC SPD Unit, ZG Lightning
Protection Technologies Co.,Ltd part number ZGZH-89, which is intended for
use in indoor RBS sites.

2 General Information
ZGZH-89 SPD Unit is a kind of surge protective device for DC power supply.
It is deployed between indoor DC power supply and outdoor Remote Radio
Unit (RRU), preventing lightning surges from damaging indoor equipment. It
can also provide protection against surge current or transient overvoltage
coming from outdoor environment.

3 Functions and Features

1. 48 V DC input, 7440 W output power.
2. 1-path input and 7-path output support, each output features overcurrent
protection.
3. Providing up to 6-path protection against lightning surges coming from
outdoor RRUs.
4. Indoor wall mounting, for easy installation and maintenance.

4 Operating Principles
The surge protective components inside of SPD Unit perform short-circuit
immediately when surges invasion occurs from outdoor environment, surge
current will be conducted to the ground (GND) through the earthing line of
SPD Unit. The transient overvoltage on the output port will be limited at a safe
level so that the indoor power supply is under protection. When surges gone
the surge protective components inside will perform high impedance between
power line and ground (GND), after that the power supply will recover to
normal state.

7 Installation and Cable Connections

7.1 Preparation

Installation tools need to be prepared as listed below:

7.2 Position of Installation

SPD Unit is required to be installed on the wall (wall mounting).

7.3 Steps of Installation

There are 6 steps to finish the installation.

Step 1: Refer to dimensional requirements of Figure 2, punch four 1050

mm holes on the wall by using an impact drill.

Step 2: Refer to Figure 3, place the expansion bolts into the holes, and fix
them.

Step 3: Fix the SPD Unit with the expansion bolts, and fasten the nuts with a
socket spanner. When installation finished, check if the SPD Unit is fixed
tightly on the wall, as is shown in Figure 4.

Step 4: Strip the outer coating layer of cable with correct peeling length, see
Figure 5 and Figure 6.

Step 5: Input cable connection and fixing.

Penetrating input and PE cables into corresponding terminals via harness

washers on the bottom of SPD Units cabinet, using TORX screwdriver to fix
cables tightly, see Figure 7.

Using strapping tapes to fix cables on support bars, see Figure 8.

Step 6: Output cable connection and fixing.

Loosening screws by using philips screwdriver to uninstall cable clampers.

Penetrating output cables into corresponding terminals via harness washers

on the bottom of SPD Units cabinet, make sure there is no divergence for
cable stripping part, using philips screwdriver to fix them tightly, see Figure
10.

Adjusting the shielding layer of output cable to ensure there is tight

connection among shielding layer, cable clampers and support bar, using
philips screwdriver to fix them together tightly, see Figure 11 and 12.

Important Note: There is 0 V and -48 V indication on installation panel, DO NOT reverse
48 V and 0 V pairs of output cable.

7.5 Reliable PE Cable Connection

To secure the discharging path for surge current to GND, the sectional
area of PE cable must be equal to 35mm2, and the length needs to be as
short as possible, because the over-long PE cable will degrade or even
eliminate the protection performance of the SPD Unit.

7.6 Check after Installation

Check if the cables are all correctly connected and fastened them tightly.
Close the circuit breakers (QF0 to QF6) which are required to be
switched on, turn on the power supply. After that, the SPD Unit is
operational.

7.7 External Fuse Connection

This SPD Unit is designed and certified for so the DC input can be protected
with an external fuse with the following specification:
1) Fuse, type gL-gG-gD, in accordance with IEC/EN 60 269-1 and UL 248-8.
2) Circuit breaker in accordance with IEC 60 947-2 and UL 489A..

8 Safety Guide for Operation

8.1 Power-Off Operation

Before performing installation or maintenance, power supply to the SPD

Unit must be switched off. Operation with power-on is prohibited.

8.2 Power-On Operation

Only after all connections have been checked, the circuit breakers can
be closed and power supply can be switched on.

8.3 Maintenance

In general the SPD Unit needs no special maintenance during its lifetime.
However, the SPD Unit is under condition of long-term operation, the
working status needs to be checked periodically especially after lightning
storm. If no voltage found on output port, the SPD Unit itself and the
power supply system must be checked in time.

8.4 Grounding System Check

The grounding system of the SPD Unit must be checked frequently during
normal operation, especially in lightning storm seasons to make sure it
maintains good grounding connection all the time. Otherwise the lightning
protection performance of the SPD Unit will be degraded more or less. If the
grounding connection opens, the SPD Unit will be failed to provide surge
protection function.

8.5 Replace Failed SPD

If the SPD inside of SPD Unit found damaged, replace it by a good one at
once, see following 5 steps as shown below.

Step 1: Use a Torx screwdriver to loosen all screws, see Figure 14.

Step 2: Use a straight screwdriver to loosen the slide of the SPD. Select point
A as support, rotate the SPD until the slide is away from the rail, see Figure
15.

Step 3: Push the SPD forward to make sure the bayonet is completely away
from the rail, see Figure 16.

Step 4: Pull out the SPD from the rail, see Figure 17.

Step 5: Reverse operation from Step 4 to Step 1 to install a new SPD,

replacement completed.

8.6 Replace Failed Circuit Breaker

If the Circuit Breaker inside of SPD Unit found damaged, replace it by a

new one at once by following the same procedures in Figure 14 to
Figure 17 above, the screwdriver for loosening and tightening the screws
required to be changed to Philips or Slotted type.

9 Storage and Transporting Conditions

The transportation is to be done when the package is in good condition. No
strong shock and impact are allowed during transportation. Keep the package
away from moist materials, exposure to rain must be avoided.

Product with package can be stored in room at temperature range of 40C to

+70C; make sure the package is stored in good ventilated condition and the
relative humidity is no more than 90%; no corrosive gas is allowed in storage
environment. Re-check the product before using it if stored longer than one
year.
