1. Description
The CT 60 cooling trap is used for condensing and trapping moisture from the material being
dried by means of vacuum. The CT 60 is positioned between the sample and the vacuum pump to
protect the vacuum pump from harmful moisture. Sketch I-00-2830 shows an example of CT 60
connection to the Hetovac vacuum rotator VR-1 containing samples and the vacuum pump. The
cooling trap is capable of condensing solvents with a freezing point above approximately 50 C.

The CT 60 may be used in its basic form or a glass container may be inserted into the CT 60 to act
as the cooling trap. This is an advantage if e.g. radioactive or poisonous vapours are condensed in
the trap, as the glass container may easily be removed and defrosted in a safe place. The glass
container has a standard cone fitting the manifold.

The CT 60 consists of a stainless steel container cooled by hermetically sealed cooling system. All
parts in contact with the trapped material is made from stainless steel. The cabinet is made from
epoxy coated mind steel.

A drain valve is installed in the front panel for pressure equalisation and draining of the
condensate. The mains switch is for starting the cooling system.

The ambient temperature must be below 27 C for the CT 60 to operate correctly. At higher
ambient temperatures 60 C is not obtainable in the trap. A 5 to 10 cm free space to the right and
rear of the unit is important to ensure a free airflow through the air grilles.

2. Installation and operation

Check the supply voltage. It must correspond to the specification on the type label on the
rear.

Check the container to be dry and clean. Place the acrylic lid with the pipe manifold over the
container.

Connect the CT 60 to the power supply.

Connect the upper pipe to the system holding the material to be dried (e.g. the Hetovac VR-
1).

Connect the lower pipe (marked vacuum pump) to the vacuum system. It is recommended to
install a vacuum valve between the CY 60 and the vacuum system. A vacuum valve will
make the system easier to use.
3. Direct operation

Place the acrylic lid with the manifold over the cooling trap.

Check that the trap is empty.

Start the cooling system by pressing the power switch.

Wait 15 to 20 minutes for the trap to reach operating temperature.

Close the drain valve.

If a Hetovac is used, place the sample in the rotor and start the Hetovac.

Slowly introduce the vacuum (opening the vacuum valve). If a vacuum pump is used for
obtaining vacuum, it must be running at its operation temperature. Water is now evaporating
from the sample. The moist air is passed through the cooling trap where the water
condenses and only the dry air passes through to the vacuum system (pump).

Disconnect the vacuum supply (close the vacuum valve) when the sample is dry.

Equalise the pressure in the system by opening the vacuum system. (A bleed valve is an
accessory for the Hetovac vacuum rotator).

Stop the cooling trap by switching off the power switch.

Remove the lid and open the drain valve. The ice will slowly melt and drain (Place a bucket
under the drain valve).

Melting the ice may be accelerated by pouring warm water into the trap:

Close the drain valve.

Fill the trap with hot water (Maximum 50 C).

Wait for the ice to melt.

Open the drain valve and drain the trap.

4. Using the glass container as condensate receiver

Follow the installation procedures first five steps.

Place the empty glass container in the cooling trap.

Start the cooling system by pressing the power switch

Wait 30 minutes for the trap to reach operating temperature.

Close the drain valve.

To improve the heat transfer from the glass container to the cooling system, pour a little
alcohol into the cooling trap. Do not overfill as the glass container may float. Wait 5 or 10
minutes for the alcohol to cool down. (Check with a thermometer).

The alcohol must be changed regularly as it will absorb water, which raises the freezing
point. Should the water/alcohol mix freeze, there is a great risk that the glass insert will
break.

If a Hetovac is used, place the sample in the rotor and start the Hetovac.

Slowly apply vacuum to the system (open the vacuum valve). If a vacuum pump is used it
must be running and have reached its operating temperature. Water is now evaporating from
the sample. Moist air passes through the glass container where the water will condense on
the cold walls and only dry air passes through the vacuum pump.

Disconnect the vacuum supply (close the vacuum valve) when the sample is dry.

Equalise the pressure in the system this is done by slowly opening the vacuum system. (A
bleed valve is an accessory for the Hetovac vacuum rotator).

Remove the manifold from the glass container. The glass container may now be removed for
de-icing.
5. Cleaning
The apparatus should be cleaned with a mild soap solution.

WARNING
The acrylic lid must not be cleaned with alcohol or any other organic solvents. Must
not be exposed to UV-light.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Prior to use

Check the rubber seal on the lid. Change the seal when it becomes stiff, frayed at the edge or
shows other signs of wear.

A flawless seal is a must to obtain a low vacuum.

6.2. Every 6 to 12 months
Clean the cooling ribs behind the rear air grilles. Use a soft brush or compressed air. Be careful not
to damage the cooling fins.
