I. DESIGN PROJECT/RESEARCH TITLE
II. INTRODUCTION
Acoustic is the science that studies the waves that are conducted through
matter due to the motion of the matter. Usually air is the material that most
people think of when it comes to acoustic waves. But acoustic waves exist in
all matter. Architectural acoustics is the study of acoustics when the air is
contained in a room. Church acoustics is a sub-division of architectural
acoustics. St. Joseph the Laborer Chapel is the place where the proponents
able to conduct treatment for acoustic reverberation time of the chapel.
Acoustic Chapel is an important factor of consideration when it comes to
designing a place for worship. The sounds that one hears can either make an
experience very memorable and exciting, or very horrendous and painful to
listen to. Churches and Chapels are usually huge spaces with very large,
blank parallel walls and vast angular ceilings. This is a recipe for a long
reverberation time (the time it takes for a sound to fade, similar to echo) which
interferes with visitors ability to understand each others speech and
increases the overall perceived noise level. This acoustical issue is intensified
in worship facilities due to the fact that they are generally crowded. Whether it
is a service or a dinner in the fellowship hall, these rooms were intended to be
full. The more voices, the louder the room becomes. The measurement of
Reverberation Time (RT) is a quite important estimation of the sound quality
in a closed environment. From this measurement, in fact, one can gain
information about intelligibility of signals and amount of reflection energy. In
particular the liturgical hall of a chapel is an interesting environment because
of its relevant volume and the materials adopted for the interior design.
As churches have multiple functions to serve, sophisticated thought
processes and design should be decided prior to the construction stage as
acoustic consultants or designers can advise on the design of the room
optimizing its acoustics and its potential to sound magnificent.
III. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study deals with the acoustical analysis, design and treatment of St.
Joseph the Laborer Chapel that is significant to each of the following
beneficiaries:
STUDENTS/ RESEARCHERS
This will serve as a basis for the students and researchers on their
Acoustic activities and researches. This study can use as a
framework and reference for further understanding of the subject
matter.
PROFESSORS
IV. OBJECTIVES
1. To compute for the Reverberation Time of St. Joseph the Laborer
Chapel.
2. To be able to identify the materials and equipment found on St. Joseph
the Laborer Chapel.
V. SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS
Scope
Delimitation
The computations for reverberation time are intended for indoor only.
The computations are only set for 500Hz and 1 kHz.

XI. DISCUSSION
The number and the positions of the objects have been analyzed in order
to have a complete representation of the environment, since this set of data
can be used to get the volume of the surface as well as the Reverberation
Time. RT60 is calculated according to the measured volume of the chapel over
absorption coefficient along with the interior materials and equipment. It is
clear from the Table 2 with 500Hz under normal condition the RT60 is 1.40
secs. and on Table 3 with 1000Hz under normal condition the RT60 is 1.14.
The results shown in normal condition that the required reverberation time
passed at 500Hz and failed at 1000Hz. Therefore, the proponents are able to
treat the chapel in order to maintain the reverberation time. After the first trial
of treatment And the results of computation given in Tables _ and _ under
the worst condition are not suitable with the purpose of the chapel; in fact the
Reverberation Time is too short to ensure a good intelligibility.
XII. CONCLUSION
XIII. RECOMMENDATION
In order to increase reverberation time at worst condition, less absorption
is needed in the chapel; this can be solved by using glass as a wall of sound
system, using seats made with glass materials, or renovate the ceiling
applicable to decrease absorption of sound and exhibit prolonged
reverberation.
