I. DESIGN PROJECT/RESEARCH TITLE

ACOUSTICAL TREATMENT FOR ST. JOSEPH THE LABORER CHAPEL

II. INTRODUCTION
Acoustic is the science that studies the waves that are conducted through
matter due to the motion of the matter. Usually air is the material that most
people think of when it comes to acoustic waves. But acoustic waves exist in
all matter. Architectural acoustics is the study of acoustics when the air is
contained in a room. Church acoustics is a sub-division of architectural
acoustics. St. Joseph the Laborer Chapel is the place where the proponents
able to conduct treatment for acoustic reverberation time of the chapel.
Acoustic Chapel is an important factor of consideration when it comes to
designing a place for worship. The sounds that one hears can either make an
experience very memorable and exciting, or very horrendous and painful to
listen to. Churches and Chapels are usually huge spaces with very large,
blank parallel walls and vast angular ceilings. This is a recipe for a long
reverberation time (the time it takes for a sound to fade, similar to echo) which
interferes with visitors ability to understand each others speech and
increases the overall perceived noise level. This acoustical issue is intensified
in worship facilities due to the fact that they are generally crowded. Whether it
is a service or a dinner in the fellowship hall, these rooms were intended to be
full. The more voices, the louder the room becomes. The measurement of
Reverberation Time (RT) is a quite important estimation of the sound quality
in a closed environment. From this measurement, in fact, one can gain
information about intelligibility of signals and amount of reflection energy. In
particular the liturgical hall of a chapel is an interesting environment because
of its relevant volume and the materials adopted for the interior design.
As churches have multiple functions to serve, sophisticated thought
processes and design should be decided prior to the construction stage as
acoustic consultants or designers can advise on the design of the room
optimizing its acoustics and its potential to sound magnificent.
III. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study deals with the acoustical analysis, design and treatment of St.
Joseph the Laborer Chapel that is significant to each of the following
beneficiaries:

STUDENTS/ RESEARCHERS

This will serve as a basis for the students and researchers on their
Acoustic activities and researches. This study can use as a
framework and reference for further understanding of the subject
matter.

PROFESSORS

This will serve as an evaluation to know the capability of the

student to learn during the class. The application of theories and
principles comprises by the subject matter is included on the study.

IV. OBJECTIVES
1. To compute for the Reverberation Time of St. Joseph the Laborer
Chapel.
2. To be able to identify the materials and equipment found on St. Joseph
the Laborer Chapel.
V. SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

Scope

Computations for reverberation time of the equipment and materials on

the entire St. Joseph the Laborer Chapel.
Proper placement of equipment and materials to meet the
requirements of the acoustic treatment intended for St. Joseph the
Laborer Chapel.
St. Joseph the Laborer Chapel that can accommodate 210 people
under normal condition.

Delimitation

The computations for reverberation time are intended for indoor only.
The computations are only set for 500Hz and 1 kHz.

VII. METHODOLOGY

In designing or treating acoustics in any room, one cannot be able to go

through the necessary procedures in complying with the acoustical
requirements without planning and forecasting what and where to start.
Methodology should first be considered before directly starting the survey and
evaluating the site. In this study, the proponents are expected to evaluate the
present acoustical design of a chapel and assess if any lack or inadequacy in
complying the standards of church acoustics are present.
Primarily, the proponents identify the framework where the standard for
the ideal reverberation time can be found. The ideal reverberation time of a
chapel must be followed according to the framework. The framework that the
proponents chose to acquire the standards from is the Primacoustic.
Primacoustic is a division of Radial Engineering Ltd and Radial Engineering
Ltd. is a manufacturer of professional audio products based in Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada.
Next to researching a framework is to classify the location where the
evaluation and site visit will be conducted. The proponents decided to do the
site survey at St. Joseph the Laborer Chapel located at C5 Road Western
Bicutan, Taguig City. The site survey performed when the chapel is not yet
occupied or empty. In line with visiting the chapel, the proponents also
obtained the necessary details that will have an effect with the sound
engineering inside the church which are the list of all the materials seen in the
location, dimension of each materials, types of raw materials used, and the
area of the chapel as a whole and by parts. Moreover, the proponents also
obtained the maximum number of people that could be accommodated by the
chapel through determining the number of people that can sit in every pew
(long bench) and monoblock chair.
After obtaining all the necessary details, tabulation of the coefficients of
each material helped the proponents to organize the data and will ease the
complexity in conducting the computations. Then, present all the
mathematical information by computing the reverberation time, volume of the
chapel, total surface area of the chapel, the average absorption coefficient of
the chapel for normal and worst case condition and all other necessary
supporting numerical data in compliance with the acoustical parameters of a
chapel. As said in the previous statements, the framework must be the basis
for the ideal reverberation time of the church acoustics therefore; the actual
reverberation time computed is to be compared with the ideal reverberation
time indicated in the framework to verify if St. Joseph the Laborer chapel
followed the acoustical parameters for church acoustics.

XI. DISCUSSION

The proponents performed the measurement stated in Tables under

Development Strategy in an empty occupancy condition in order to best
evaluate the Reverberation Time under normal condition, since the presence
of people influence the measurement therefore it is considered as a worst
condition. In fact the acoustical response of the chapel changes in fully
occupancy since the absorbing surface increases and so the Reverberation
Time decreases. As stated in Development Strategy the Tables are classified
in to three sets. Tables 1 and 2 are set for Normal condition without people.
Tables 3 and

The number and the positions of the objects have been analyzed in order
to have a complete representation of the environment, since this set of data
can be used to get the volume of the surface as well as the Reverberation
Time. RT60 is calculated according to the measured volume of the chapel over
absorption coefficient along with the interior materials and equipment. It is
clear from the Table 2 with 500Hz under normal condition the RT60 is 1.40
secs. and on Table 3 with 1000Hz under normal condition the RT60 is 1.14.
The results shown in normal condition that the required reverberation time
passed at 500Hz and failed at 1000Hz. Therefore, the proponents are able to
treat the chapel in order to maintain the reverberation time. After the first trial
of treatment And the results of computation given in Tables _ and _ under
the worst condition are not suitable with the purpose of the chapel; in fact the
Reverberation Time is too short to ensure a good intelligibility.
XII. CONCLUSION

From the results of the reverberation time, it is found that St.

Joseph the Laborer Chapel has passed the requirement for reverberation
time (1.2 secs. 1.8 secs) under normal condition (when not in use) with a
frequency of 500Hz and failed with 1000Hz. However, the reverberation
time should be maintain when the chapel is filled with people (worst
scenario), as opposed to the empty environment in which these
measurements were taken. A more extensive analysis should be
performed to find the issues that make the chapel undesirable for its
purpose, and it should be treat acoustically so that it may be more ideal for
speech intelligibility.

XIII. RECOMMENDATION
In order to increase reverberation time at worst condition, less absorption
is needed in the chapel; this can be solved by using glass as a wall of sound
system, using seats made with glass materials, or renovate the ceiling
applicable to decrease absorption of sound and exhibit prolonged
reverberation.
