Vietnam from 04th to 07th September 2015.
In the evening of 07th September, the President
had a warm welcome meeting with section
members, sponsors and section officers at
Sheraton Hotel in HCMC.

In this meeting, Dr. Meehan made a presentation

about Innovation and Collaboration and
had a stimulating discussion with attendees
about emerging challenges in the oil and gas
industry.

Mr. Tony Roche, Chairman of Vietnam

Section, congratulated Dr. Meehan on his new
role as SPE President. On this occasion, Dr.
Meehan also awards the valuable Gold
Standard designation to SPE Vietnam

Although there has not been a lot of positive

news in our industry there is a lot to be positive
about regarding the SPE activities in Vietnam.

There was a very successful visit from the SPE

President to Vietnam which went extremely
well and is covered in detail below. Members
of the management committee met with a
number of operators to outline the direction
the SPE is taking and we received some very
useful and insightful feedback that will help
ensure our efforts are directed to where you the
members want the society to go. Communication
was a major issue and we are establishing key
contacts in all companies to ensure everyone
is kept up-to-date. I would like to thank all of
you that we met for giving up your time and
for your constructive comments. Our YP and
student chapters are more active than ever.
The recent Technical talk in October was a
sell out and very well received and of course
the Golf and Tennis Tourney is almost upon
us.

Meticulous planning for the Golf and Tennis
tourney has been carried out by a dedicated
team to ensure that the event is a great
success. As always we are not perfect but I
would like to thank all of the individuals
involved for their effort and giving their time to
organise this hugely entertaining networking

fully booked but we are working hard to
ensure that as many people as possible who
want to play are able to play. The tennis
event continues to grow and develop and we
hope all participants see the improved
changes this year.
SPE arranged a book collection effort to help
support the libraries we have built recently
and we collected over 1,500 books which
have already been donated to the libraries. If
anyone still has any books to donate please

We are all saddened by the passing of three
colleagues recently, Alex Daye, Mike Farrelly
and Luu Chau, our thoughts are with their
families and they will all be missed by their

TECHNICAL PROGRAM
October 2015 Technical Talk
SPE monthly technical meetings have attracted
a lot of attention and generated interesting
and productive discussions. We will continue to
maintain a good balance between exploration,
development and production topics. We also
intend to keep a good and proven practice
arranging the talks in different locations Ho
Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Vung Tau. Doing
so gives the opportunity to attract and invite
new audiences, including young professionals
and students.

The TeGiac Trang (TGT) oil field is located in
the northern part of Block 16-1, Cuu Long
Basin, offshore Vietnam and is operated by
Hoang Long Joint Operating Company
(HLJOC). Block 5 is located in the southern
part of the field and was discovered by well
X1. The principal challenge for the first Block
5 developmentwell was to confirm the fluid
distribution in the reservoirs covered by DST3
in well X1. In order to do this HLJOC
deployed the Sampling While Drilling tool
for the first Block 5 development well.
This talk reviewed the numerous benefits of
Sampling While Drilling, which included
confirming the distribution of reservoir fluids,
obtaining reservoir fluid samples with low
contamination, proving up OIIP from the
target reservoirs, giving improved understanding
of the Block 5 area by observing pressure
communication with the production area,
avoiding multiple DSTs in the first development
well and hence giving significant cost saving.
The speaker, Mr. Bui Huu Phuoc has got
10-years experience in the Oil and Gas
industry and currently works as a Senior Geologist
at Hoang Long Hoan Vu JOC. His areas of
expertise include log analysis in low resistivity
and thin bed reservoirs, pressure analysis and
petro physical evaluations, integration of
core, borehole images and conventional logs
for depositional and reservoir characterization.
He is also experienced in production log
interpretation forgeologicalmodelupdate.
The presented topic attracted a great deal of
attention from the audience with many questions

For November Technical Talk we have selected
a topic which is important for any Oil & Gas
company working either at Exploration or
Development phase the monetization of
hydrocarbon resources and reserves. This
talk covers the movement of resources from
exploration potential through to reserves,
production and ultimately revenue.
SPE has published guidelines covering the
estimation of resources from play concept
right through to producing reserves (2007
SPE PRMS). However, at each step there are
grey areas which are often poorly understood
or defined and can lead to lack of consistency
between companies and between different
areas within companies. This talk will take us
on the journey and will address the murky
areas where interpretation of the rules is
often difficult and where companies often
struggle to find consistency and auditability.

the underlying objective of the resource estimation
process is to provide reliable forecasts which
facilitate optimal field development. This is
accomplished through progressive reduction
of the uncertainty in minimum time and at

KEC, Maersk & GCA. His expertise includes
senior management, reserves & planning,

implementation of SPE-compliant reserves
reporting systems in 4 oil companies.
Tony is a member of SPE, SPEE, SEAPEX. He
used to serve as SPE Distinguished Lecturer in
2006/2007 and 2008/2009. He also served
as a member of SPE Oil & Gas Reserves
Committee from 2004 to 2007. Tony has
B.Sc. Degree in Geology & Biochemistry
from Brookes University, Oxford, UK.

SPE 2015 Golf & Tennis Tournament

Dear Fellow Sponsors and Players,
On behalf of 2015 SPE Vietnam Golf and
Tennis Committee, I would like to invite you to the
15th annual SPE Golf and Tennis Tournament.
The tournament, as its long tradition, will
once again be held at Vung Tau beach city
with the golf event taking place at the Paradise
Golf Course, and Tennis at the OSC Courts,
within the Vietsovpetro Compound.
This year, the event marks its 15th anniversary
of the tournament in Vietnam, and as we all
know, under challenging times in the industry.
Within this environment, the 2015 SPE G&T
Committee has continued to strive to attract
meaningful in-kind sponsors, to diversify the
Main Tent program, and to proactively control
costs in all outsourced services while maintaining
the high standard we all are used to.
The strong commitment of our volunteer committee
and dedication of our Sponsors has been the
cornerstone in delivering a successful tourney
throughout the years. As in past years, our
aim has been to allocate the Tourney's
proceeds to support local charities, focusing
on education, and young professionals up
and coming in the industry. We continue to

to education, there has been, and continues
to be, a social aspect to our event which has

students, helmets and school book donations;
and building school libraries and classrooms
in remote areas). The SPE Vietnam Section is
very proud of the efforts of the SPE volunteers,
and of these accomplishments.

YOUNG PROFESSIONAL
As we enter the home stretch for 2015, it is
once again time to review past activities for
the Young professionals section and set the
stage for upcoming events to close out the
year. Oil and gas industry continues to struggle
in current market conditions but this in no
means has affected the participation of
Young professionals (YP) across the board.
The section would like to thank all the YP
members and student volunteers who have
attended or been involved in organizing
some of the events.
The first technical seminar was hosted in April
this year with more than 25 attendees from
varying levels working in the Oil and gas
industry. The feedback from attendees has
been very valuable in selecting topics for
future seminars and the section would appreciate
the continued input from everyone involved. It
is planned to conduct one more technical
seminar before the end of this year, details of
which will be sent out in last week of October.
In Augurst, SPE Vietnam sponsored two YP
committee members to attend SPE YP Applied
technology workshop in Kuala Lumpur.
Participation in an event of this magnitude
has allowed for greater collaboration with
the regional SPE and YP teams.
There have been two networking events held
year to date where the committee continues to
invest time and effort to recruit new members.
It is planned to hold a final networking event
for 2015 in Dec first week.
Being part of YP is a great way to build your
experience and network with other oil and
gas professionals. If you are interested in
volunteering in any way, we would like to

SPE donated 60 bicycles for poor-smart SPE donates a Kindergarten school in Thom

Tra Vinh ranks second of three provinces with

highest number of poor households in the
Mekong Delta with poverty rate of more than
16% and poor accessibility rate of 9%.
Village 4, Phong Phu Commune, Cau Ke
District, Tra Vinh Province has population of
2,721 people with 86 children, and 167 poor
households. Monthly income is approximately
VND 400,000 per person. The poor make
money by working as seasonal hired laborers
mostly in agriculture, an unstable and
low-paid job.

Only 65% of kids in total 456 preschool

children in Phong Phu Commune have acces-
sibility to go to school. Due to the limited
budget of local government, there is no class
for pre-school children at Thom Rom.

The renovation project of the Thom Rom

kindergarten school, financially sponsored by
SPE Vietnam in partnership with Partage
Vietnam, started in July 2015 with the aim to
enable children of pre-school age at village 4
to enjoy studying in a better classroom. Most
childrens parents will be able to put their
minds at ease and earn more money for their
families and thereby reduce the portion of
poor households in the area. Moreover, the
number of the students dropping out of school

will be reduced. In addition, improving the education and living conditions for the poor children
of this remote village will allow them to break out of a cycle of poverty that spans generations.

After several months of construction, during which regular visits, check-up and inspections were
made by the project partner to help ensure standard quality was met, the Thom Rom kindergarten
school was officially opened on the 28th October 2015 with presence from SPE Vietnam (Mr.
Ngo Qui Khanh - Charity Committee member, Ms. Pham Thanh - SPE VN Admin Assistant), its
partner (Partage Vietnam) and the happy teachers and children of the new facility.

Beach Cleaning, in Vung Tau: 1st February, 05th April and 07th June 2015 attracted hundreds
of volunteers and their families and friends and cleaned up tons of trash.
