Rabbit and Bear

1
Once upon a time, there lived as neighbours, a bear and a rabbit. The rabbit
is a good shot. In contrary, the bear is always clumsy and could not use the arrow to
good advantage.

One day, the bear called over the rabbit and asked the rabbit to take his bow
and arrows and came with bear to the other side of the hill. The rabbit feared to
arouse the bear's anger so he could not refuse it. He consented and went with the
bear and shot enough buffalo to satisfy the hungry family. Indeed he shot and killed
so many that there was lots of meat left after the bear and his family had loaded
themselves and packed all they could carry home.
2
The bear was very gluttonous and did not want the rabbit to get any of the
meat. The rabbit could not even taste the blood from the butchering as the bear
would throw earth on the blood and dry it up. The poor rabbit would have to go
home hungry after his hard day's work.

The bear was the father of five children. The youngest child was very kind to
the rabbit. He was very hearty eater. The mother bear always gave him an extra
large piece of meat but the youngest child did not eat it. He would take it outside
with him and pretended to play ball with the meat. He kicked toward the rabbit's
house and when he got close to the door he would give the meat with such a great
kick. The meat would fly into the rabbit's house. In this way, the poor rabbit would
get his meal unknown to the papa bear. 3

Mr. Hollands Dream

When Mr. Holland was a young man, he played a lot of football, and he had
always been thin and very strong. But then he worked in an office for many years, and he

12 | M Z
drove to work in a car, so when he was forty, he was fat and very soft, and he didnt wish
to get fatter and softer every year.

One day one of his friend said to him: Would you like to be thinner, Fred? Of
course, I would, Mr. Holland answered. Well, his friend said, stop going to your office
by car, and get a bicycle. Mr. Holland had not ridden a bicycle for many years. Its very
hard to learn to ride a bicycle again at your age, his wife said.

But it was not too hard for Mr. Holland to do. He usually sat in his living room
and read the newspapers in the evening, but he bought a bicycle for his birthday and
practiced riding it every evening instead. He hoped that it would help him to get thinner,
and he got a lot of pleasure from it.

He found little roads which were not really very narrow, but were too narrow for
cars, and there he got away from the nasty noises of the city, which were becoming too
much for him. They were not really very loud, but they were too loud for Mr. Holland.

Then he began to go to his office by bicycle. Sometimes all the cars stopped at a
red light, and he went past them to the front, because his bicycle was narrow. Then he
was very happy.

Yesterday he stopped at a red light, and a man came up behind him on another
bicycle. He stopped too and said to Mr. Holland, Have the police taken your driving
licence away too.

Mr Holland was not fat when he was young. Then he became fat and soft because
he sat too much. He wanted to get thinner, and a friend told him not to use his car, but to
go by bicycle instead. Mr Holland's wife thought that it was too hard, but it was not. Mr
Holland began to ride to his office with his bicycle, but another man thought that he did
this because the police had taken his driving licence away.

Dear Steven,
I am in the fifth form. Our classroom is on the second floor of the school. There are
twenty-one desks in the classroom and two pupils sit at each desk. The teachers
desk is in the front of the pupils desks. The blackboard is on the wall to the left of
teacher. The chalk and the duster are in a box near the blackboard. There are four
very large windows on the side of the room opposite to the door. We open the
windows during the break between lessons. There are portraits on the wall over the
blackboard. There are pictures and maps hanging on the walls in the classroom.
There are lamps hanging above the desks. In winter it gets dark early so we turn on
the light. We begin our lessons at 12.05. We have five lessons a day. We have a short
10-minute break between lessons, but we have a long 20-minute break between the
second and third lessons. During the long break we go to the dining-room and have
lunch. We finish our lessons at ten minutes past five.
Convey my regards to your parents.
Yours sincerely,
Alex

Hello Patrick,
I want to tell you about my best friend.
I have several friends at school. But the best among them is Anton, who is my class
fellow.
He is of my age. But he is much taller than I in size. Anton has a very cheerful
nature. I've known him for two years but have never seen him angry. His face is
always smiling. Even if any boy abuses him, Anton never loses his temper.
At school he sits on the same bench with me. We are together for the greater part of
the day. Together we learn and play together. Other boys envy our friendship. But we
do not mind it.
Anton is very good at his lessons. He never neglects his studies. He never gives the
teacher a chance to complaint. Mathematics is his weak subject. But Anton is doing
his best to make up his weakness.
My friend is active and smart. He is good at both studies and games. Anton never
tells a lie. He helps his parents in the house He loves hard work and honest labor.
All his qualities have attracted me. I cannot find a more ideal friend than Anton.
Best wishes,
Alex

Making Invitations

Here are some useful phrases to make and accept invitations in English.
1. Inviting
Invitations are often structured into three parts: asking the person if they're free, saying
what the event is, then inviting the person to attend. For example:

"What are you doing next Saturday? We're having some people over for a meal.
Would you like to come?"

"Have you got anything on for this evening? A couple of us are going to the pub after
work if you'd like to come."

(to have something on = to have an arrangement)

Other ways to make an invitation:

"Are you free next Thursday?"

"Are you doing anything next weekend?"

"Would you be interested in coming to the cinema with me tonight?"

"How do you fancy going out for a meal at the weekend?"

Accepting
If "Do
youryou fancy coming
invitation to the
starts with cinema
a phrase with us on Tuesday?"
like:

"Would you like to join Sally and I for a bite to eat after work?"

"Would you like to"

You can reply:

"I'd love to, thanks."

"That's very kind of you, thanks."

"That sounds lovely, thanks."

21 | M Z
You can accept with:

"What a great idea, thanks."

"Sure! What's on?"

"Yeah, why not!" (this can sound a little unenthusiastic, so use it with good friends.)

2. Declining

"Would you like to come over for dinner on Saturday?"

"That's very kind of you, but actually I'm doing something else on Saturday."

"Well, I'd love to, but I'm already going out to the cinema."

"I'm really sorry, but I've got something else on."

"I really don't think I can I've planned to go away that weekend."

Giving and Asking Directions
If you're in a new town or city and you want to know where a place or building is, these
are useful phrases to ask for (and get) directions.
1. How you can ask

Say "Excuse me" before you ask a person. To make it sound like a question, make
your voice go up on "me".

"Excuse me. How do I get to (the railway station) please?"

"Excuse me. Where's the nearest (post office) please?"

"Excuse me. I'm looking for the Number 6 bus stop."

2. Giving Directions

The person who helps you often says how near or far the place is:

"It's about five minutes from here."

"It's about a ten-minute walk."
"It's easier if I can show you on the map"

Specific instructions
Here are some useful words and phrases for giving street instructions.
"Turn left / right."
"Go straight on at the lights / when you come to the crossroads." (Lights = traffic
lights; crossroads = where two roads cross)
"Go across the roundabout." (Roundabout = where all the cars go round a circle in
the middle of the road)
"Take the first turning / road / street on your left / right." (Turning = road that goes
left or right)
"You'll see / You'll come to a (bank). Then "
"Don't take the first road."
"Go on for about (2 minutes / 100 metres)."

23 | M Z
3. Landmarks

We often make reference to landmarks when we give directions to help the other person.
These can be places in a town, such as cinema, bank, bus stop, etc. They can also be parts
of the road system. Here are some common terms:

taxi rank = a place where taxis queue for passengers

level crossing = where the road and railway meet. There are barriers that go up and
down to signal when a train is coming

underpass = a walkway that goes under a busy road so pedestrians can get to the
other side safely

overpass / flyover = a road that goes over another road (or railway)

are traffic lights.

crossroads = where two roads cross each other

junction = where one road meets another, and you can either go left or right

fork in the road = where the road divides, and you decide to go left or right

turning = a road off to your left or right

main road = a big road where there is lots of traffic

lane = a small road, or a part of a road (the left-hand lane / the right-hand lane; the
bus lane)

24 | M Z
4. Use Prepositions of Direction

Go past = continue past something so that is is now behind you

Go across = cross something, like a road or crossroads

Go along = continue down a road

Go straight on = don't turn left or right

Go up = walk / drive up a hill

Go down = walk or drive down a hill or a road

Go through = pass through something, such as a tunnel or a town

Go out of = exit (i.e. a railway station)

It's in front of you = you can see it facing you

It's opposite the bank = it faces the bank

It's on the corner = it's where two roads meet at a 90 angle
