Ms. Carley
2017/2018
First and foremost, I would like to welcome you to the 2017/2018 school year. I look
forward to getting to know you all and I am confident that this will be a great school year
together.
Course Description
Hello, welcome to 11th grade College Prep English! This course will cover a survey of
American literature and informational texts from early colonial times to the 21st century.
Additionally, we will be covering the 11th grade Common Core Standards including a
variety of speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills. More specifically, this class will
focus on close reading, analyzing texts, developing rhetorical skills, citing and evaluating
credible sources, and strengthening writing.
11th Grade is an important year for students. This year, ALL 11th grade students will take
the ACT and CAASPP tests. Throughout the year, we will be working together to prepare
for these two impactful assessments.
Year at a Glance
The following is an overview of the major writing assessments for the school year.
Classroom Expectations
In order to produce a safe and productive learning environment, it is important that
students come prepared to learn every day. In order to foster this positive academic
environment that is student-centered, I expect the following from all students:
1. Be prepared and ready to work when the bell rings.
2. Listen respectfully to others: avoid side conversations or unkind remarks.
3. Follow ALL school policies set forth in the school handbook.
4. Cell phones or other devices must never be a distraction from class and must be
used respectfully and responsibly.
5. Cheating or plagiarism will result in zero credit for the applicable assignment.
6. Keep our classroom clean by picking up after yourself. No food or drink besides
water. If you are seen leaving trash, gum, anything in my classroom, you will
serve after school detention with me.
If students do not follow these classroom expectations, students will receive (1) a
warning, (2) a phone call home, (3) 30-minute after school detention, and (4) a referral
to Admin. If behavior is not resolved immediately in class, you will be sent to the office.
Academic Honesty:
Students must follow the academic honesty policy of the district. I do not tolerate any
cheating or plagiarism whatsoever in my class. Any instance of cheating or plagiarism
will result in a 0 and a note that says you cheated in the gradebook. Please attempt all
assignments and learn from them. Take pride in your work, do not share answers, and do
not feel tempted to copy others answers. Learning and growth happens when you try
struggle, and sometimes fail, take this route and you will be reward. Chances are, you
will earn a much better grade if you take his approach rather than cheat. I WILL
KNOW IF YOU CHEATED. DO NOT DO IT. THANK YOU! :)
Grading Percentages
