Intended Learning Outcomes:

What will the students be able to know and do by the completion of this lesson?

Students should develop an understanding of what a budget is and the best ways to
allocate their spending.

How do these learning outcomes relate to the relevant curriculum documents:

(VELS, VCE, VCAL,VET)?
AusVELS level 5: Create simple financial plans (ACMNA106)

How will students be involved in negotiating learning outcomes?

Students will have free choice on the items they choose to purchase and how they
will go about working them out. Simple instructions will be given in the
beginning of the lesson.

Prior Learning and Experiences:

What prior learning is assumed for this lesson?

Students will need to use their prior knowledge of addition, multiplication and
perhaps division to work out the total spending.

How will students prior learning and experiences be used in this lesson?

These mathematical concepts will be utilised throughout this activity.

Why is this lesson relevant to the lives of the students?

Aspects of creating a budget will be an ongoing circumstance in these students lives as it
is a ongoing life skill requirement.
Teaching Strategies: (the actual lesson- how will you start it, break it down,
time management) small activities to fill in small amounts of time to keep the
class from losing concentration.

How will the lesson and ideas be introduced and made relevant to the students?

To introduce this lesson, the question on 'What is a budget' will be asked to the
students. After answers the correct answer will be given followed by instructions for
activity. The students will be told that they are hosting a party and need to supply all
the food. They have a budget of $200 and will need to select proper food and drink to
cater for the whole class. There must be a variety of snacks, drinks and main meals.

What exactly will the students be required to do and what will be your role?

Students will be required to select foods from a catalogue and attempt to select a range
of food and get as close to $200 as possible.

How will you create a collaborative learning environment and how will the
classroom be arranged to support this?

Students will be allowed to work in small groups to complete this activity. This
aspect, promoting peer support and involvement throughout the environment.

How will you address the needs of individuals in the group?

During activity, the teacher will be able to assist students who may not understand
the activity and give them a good starting point.
What difficulties will need to be anticipated?

Students may not have had experience with this type of mathematical aspect, so a
clear explanation will be needed before they break off and being.

How will you ensure the students are on-task and what strategies will you use
to manage difficult behaviours?

It will be crucial to break up the students who will not work correctly or
complete the activity.

I will need to remain in top of the students to ensure they do not get away with
anything.

During the lesson, I will roam around the classroom to ensure everyone is still
doing the right thing.

How will you draw ideas together and conclude the lesson?
We will conclude the lesson by coming back together and seeing which group was
able to get as close as possible to the budget of $200. This given all students the
ability to see how each accomplished it while having a range of food items.
Resources, Materials and Organisation: (Need to have all planned beforehand, not
good to leave a class halfway - duty of Care)

For this activity, students will need access to a supermarket catalogue which will be supplied for them.
They will also need maths books and pencil cases.

Assessment: (taking notes on the students when they are doing work - notes on what
they need to work in writing, etc.)

How will you assess what the students have learnt?

At the end of the lesson, we will be able to see what the students accomplished
throughout and will have a clear view if they were able to successfully complete lesson.

What strategies will you use to encourage students to build on their learning?

Students will be encouraged to think of what they have learnt in this activity for
when they will need to do it again in the future.
