ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM

FACULTY OF LANGUAGE AND ARTS EDUCATION
UNIVERSITY OF PGRI SEMARANG
2016
My Experiences in Bali

On May 9 until May 13, 2016 the students of English Education Faculty of Language
and Arts Education University of PGRI Semarang were went to Bali to did field study. We
were gathered near our campus which the bus had already waited for about 6.30 A.M.
I spent our first day in the bus due to it is quite far from Semarang to the Ketapangs
harbor. So my friends and I spent the day with sang, talked something, watches some movies,
snacking, or just slept. In the midnight I was finally crossed to the Gilimanuks harbor. I
stayed inside the ship for about 2 hours until we arrived in Bali, and my trip just started.
We were in Desa Adat Panglipuran, we were welcomed with the chairman. First we
were gathered in an aula and we listened some explanation from the chairman. The chairman
said that in Desa Adat Panglipuran, the men could not poligamy and if there any, than that
man will get a punishment as the law that valid in Desa Adat Panglipuran. And also in Desa
Adat Panglipuran, the society are appealed to keep the environtment clean therefore Desa
Adat Panglipuran got the reward of the most clean village. After that, we were looking
around and we roved that there were none of trash! All were clean. Then we talked with the
local people and they said they also sells jamu ramuan cem-cem. Its a kind of drinking water
but it has green color and it has some good effects to our body, one of the benefits is relieve
nausea. Some of our friends bought it and try to tasting flavored drinks.
Then we also visited Teman Joger in Luwus. Jogger is a kind of a shopping center
which sells T-shirts, sandals, bags, and many more which this Jogger is the Bali icon. When
we went to Bali, it is not complete if we did not buy Jogger. Therefore we were spending
much money there and sometimes we did not realize that we were bought so many things.
Besides we visited Jogger, we also visited Pandawa beach on Balis southern Bukit
Peninsula. The tour guide said that this beach is Hidden behind large carved limestone
cliffs that reveal wide views to the Indian Ocean and also dubbed as Secret Beach. We
see a beautiful scenery along the way to get there. When we arrived at the beach, we see
big stone which the letter PANTAI PANDAWA and also see six white stone statues
draped in colourful Balinese waistcloths, named Dewi Kunti, the mother figure from the
epic, and the five heroes: Dharmawangsa (also known by the name Yudhistira), Bima,
Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadewa. A single empty arch seems to make way for another
planned character, either the heroes father, Pandu, or his second wife, Madri. The water
of the sea is so clear with the blend of blue and green. We walk through the way to get
the most beautiful place to take a selfie with our group member. Then we split up the job
to asked tourist for interview. Here, we went to the edge of the sea to interviewed the
tourist. We meet a couple tourist named Ahmad and Daisy. We asked them about their
vacation and they answered enthusisastly. It is their first time visited Bali and they loved
to get there. They said that Bali is a beautiful place to spent the time during vacation.
Then we took a photo together and left. We left the beach about 3pm and continued our
journey to Garuda Wisnu Kencana.

Then we visited Garuda Wisnu Kencana. Garuda Wisnu Kencana or GWK is one of
the Bali icon because in this place we can see a huge Wisnus statue and it was amazing for it
statue is very high and big. But when we arrived there, it was already twilight so we could
enjoyed the Wisnus statue. Therefore we directly watched the Kecak dance which also very
fascinating. There also some tourist who watched that Kecak dance too.

The crew of the Kecak dance shared a paper story about Kecak Dance so we can read
for a moment before the show start. It will be quite dark when the show began as it was the
time of the sunset. The story is about Rama, Sita and Laksamana was walking in the forest
when suddenly a deer appears. Rama leaves Sita with Laksamana to hunt the deer. Suddenly
Sita heard a scream, and told Laksamana to help Rama. Laksamana was reluctant to leave
Sita alone, but Sita was persistent. Laksamana then drew a circle of fire to protect Sita.
Rahwana tries to kidnap Sita by masquerading as Bhagawan (old man) that is exhausted and
thirsty. When Sita steps out of the fire circle to give Bhagawan some water, Bhagawan
kidnaps Sita. Sita screamed for help and was heard by a Garuda (bird) that is passing by the
sky. Garuda tries to help but Rahwana shoot down one of its wing. Sita was taken by
Rahwana to Alengka Pura. Rama and Laksamana were actually lost in the forest Ayodya
Pura. Rama thought of his wife, Sita who were taken by Rahwana to Alengka Pura. Rama
requested the help of Hanoman (white monkey) to take his ring to Sita in Alengka Pura. Sita
wails for her fate in Taman Istana Alengka when Hanoman suddenly appeared. Hanoman
said he was sent by Rama and shows Sita the ring. Sita in return, give a flower to Rama and
requested Hanoman to bring the message to Rama to save her. The duration of Kecak Dance
is about an hour. When the show was end, we walked together to the parking area to enter the
buss. Then we continued to our next trip.

Another interesting place we visited was Bali museum. In Bali museum, there were
some tools we used in the past for hunting, cooking even guns are there. We took some
pictures on it and took a note of it knowledge.
Then we also visited Sukowati art market. Sukawati art market is very well known to
the world. Sukawati art market is located in the village of Sukawati,Gianyar regency. The
distance from Denpasar airport is about thirty kilometres. We were there on the second day,
Wednesday, May 11, 2016.Sukawati art market is very well known for selling clothes and
crafts traditional Balinese with very cheap price. Batik clothing as distinctively Batik
Balinese ornaments. As the art market, Sukawatisold stuff art such as paintings, frames,
unique stones, antiques, cars, rickshaws, miniature bicycles and others. In addition, there are
many fabrics with Balinese motifs, shorts, t-shirts, batik, wallets, and clothes at a bargain
price. Many other crafts like beads, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other souvenirs with
ethnic nuances such as bags, bed cover, and household items are also available here.We saw
many good clothes and pants that can be used on the beach and the price is very cheap
compared to other places. We also do not forget to bring clothes and crafts for family and
friends at home. All prices are offered here can you bargain. We can conclude that the
pricewas a half of the price offered by the seller.
Besides cloths and Batik, there are also sculpture, crafts, accessories, clothing, snacks
Bali, spa equipment, and paintings that can be bought, the paintings that were sell was
naturalistic and abstract. One of the craftsmen painting said that the price offered was diverse
depend on the size and complexity of the images.
At the second day on Wednesday 11th May, 2016, we went to Kuta Beach. Kuta is a
beach resort remains one of Indonesia's major tourist destinations. It is known internationally
for its long sandy beach, varied accommodation, many restaurants and bars, and many
renowned surfers. It is located near Bali's NgurahRai Airport. As we took a bus, so we had to
stop at the central parking lot and tookpublic transportation to Kuta Beach Bali.Along the
road to the beach, there were plenty of hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, art markets, and
other tourist support facilities.
We visited Kuta Beach in the early evening so we can see the lovely sunset there. It is
right place for people to see scenic sunset in the afternoon. It was an outstanding view.
People who come to Bali will be very unlucky if they do not see the panoramic sunset in this
town. It is real that tourists feel happy to be there. My group tried to interact with foreign
tourists, while search, we walked from end to end enjoying the view and the breeze. We also
do not forget to capture the moment. Tired take pictures and enjoyed the sunset, we sat at the
beach side to enjoy the cool drink. Besides, we also can do many activities in this beach for
its complete beach activities. They can sunbathe, swim, surf, play soccer beach, kite flying,
play volleyball or just took a walk like us. For persons who like playing soccer, do not forget
to try the game with some locals. The locals usually set up the goal posts between Hard Rock
Cafe and Discovery Shopping Mall at 16.00.For novice surfers, no need to worry if you want
to learn the sport of surfing. Along the beach many rent surf boards with varying prices,
depending on the large and the quality of the material. We accompanied by an experienced
guide who had always ready to help you to surf.
If you were tired down the beach, local villagers, was ready waiting to offer massage
services. Many tourists who used the services of the massage was to relax or simply relaxing
their muscles. Mostly were foreign touristswhile local tourists prefer to sit or took pictures.
The next tourism object that we have visited was Krisna. Krisna is central souvenirs
in Bali. We were visited Krisna after spent 2 hours at Kuta Beach. It was about 18:30 we
were picked up by public transportation and taken us to Krisna. Krisna divides into 2
sections. in the first section is for our dinner and live music and the second one is the
souvenir shop itself. There are a lot of kinds of souvenir, such as herbal beauty product that
famous in Bali, clothes, bag and etc. Krisna also has an entire section of local delicacies.
Most of us decided to have a dinner before entered the souvenir shop. But there were some of
us who get into the souvenir shop just before had a dinner. When we had a dinner, there was
a student of PGRI Semarang who showed her ability in sing a song. She sang several songs
during dinner, make our dinner more fun.
Our journey to visited Bali Island is complete. Then we back to Semarang by crossed
the Gilimanuk harbor and arrived in Semarang on Friday at 09.00 a.m.
Identification of the Local Wisdom and Cultural Values

In Bali, a lot of Hindustan live there. Therefore Bali has a strong local wisdom which
perhaps only in Bali we can meet such a strong local wisdom, such as Balinese often bring
sesajen, the way they wear their clothes, the people are respect each other, even they are very
friendly to the visitors.
In Bali, when you see sesajen in the road side, public places, even store, do not be
surprised. Balinese have a habit tobring sesajen in some places. They do this in order to
respect their ancestors.
In certain time, they will renew their sesajen. They bring it from their home and read
some words. They do this everyday.
Another things that we can find in Bali is that sometimes the women and men wear
their traditional clothes. For the example when they want to go to the Pura, they will wear
this clothes. Moreover if there is any celebration, they will wear this clothes too.
Balinese also very friendly to each other even to the new comers. They often ask
some questions such as from where we are, where will we go, and so on.
This culture makes makes Bali loved by many people and the tourists are come back
often.
Compare Contrast between the Balis Culture and Indonesia

As we know, Indonesia has so many islands and and the island has its own culture,
included Bali. Although Bali is a small island, but it has some interesting cultures which
make tourists come often. Balis culture and Indonesias culture has some differences.
Bali and Indonesia has the same national language, it is Indonesian. Balinese often
speak each other using Indonesian. Therefore, the foreigners who come to Bali are interested
to study Indonesian. By this way, Balinese is promoted Indonesian so that Indonesian can be
known by the foreigner.
Balis culture and Indonesias culture also have some differences. The first one is that
Balinese often bring sesajen to be take in certain places, such as in front of their home, store,
on the road side, and so on. Usually we can only find this habit in Bali.
If we pay attention of their house design, we will find that in front of their home, there
are some statues. We can often meet this design maybe only in Bali because of in Bali most
of them are Hindustan. This design can be the special characteristics house in Bali.
In Bali, there are some women and men often wear their traditional clothes in their
daily activities. It does not like the people in Java, for example, people in Java like to wear
simple clothes, but in Bali is different. Even in Balinese want to have a devotions in Pura,
they usually wear this traditional clothes.
Even if Bali has differences culture, still Bali is part of Indonesia and those
differences make Indonesia have more variation and every differences make Indonesia rich in
its culture.
