Multimedia

1.What is multimedia?

Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text,

graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other
media where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and
processed digitally. This definition contains four components essential to multimedia.
First, there must be a computer to coordinate what you see and hear, and to interact
with. Second, there must be links that connect the information. Third, there must be
navigational tools that let you traverse the web of connected information. Finally,
because multimedia is not a spectator sport, there must be ways for you to gather,
process, and communicate your own information and ideas. If one of these components
is missing, you do not have multimedia. For example, if you have no computer to
provide interactivity, you have mixed media, not multimedia. If there are no links to
provide a sense of structure and dimension, you have a bookshelf, not multimedia. If
there are no navigational tools to let you decide the course of action, you have a movie,
not multimedia. If you cannot create and contribute your own ideas, you have a
television, not multimedia.

Multimedia can be recorded and played, displayed, interacted with or accessed

by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic
devices, but can also be part of a live performance. Multimedia devices are electronic
media devices used to store and experience multimedia content. Multimedia is
distinguished from mixed media in fine art; for example, by including audio it has a
broader scope. The term "rich media" is synonymous with interactive multimedia

. Multimedia technology refers to interactive, computer-based applications that allow

people to communicate ideas and information with digital and print elements.
Professionals in the field use computer software to develop and manage online graphics
and content. The work that media technology specialists produce is used in various
media, such as training programs, web pages, and news sites.
2.Advantages and disadvantage of multimedia?

Advantages:

It is very user-friendly. It doesnt take much energy out of the user, in the sense
that you can sit and watch the presentation, you can read the text and hear the
audio.
It is multi sensorial. It uses a lot of the users senses while making use of
multimedia, for example hearing, seeing and talking.
It is integrated and interactive. All the different mediums are integrated through
the digitisation process. Interactivity is heightened by the possibility of easy
feedback.
It is flexible.Being digital, this media can easily be changed to fit different
situations and audiences.
It can be used for a wide variety of audiences, ranging from one person to a
whole group.
It access to a vast variety of information.
It increased the positive emotions of the student.

Disadvantages:

Information overload. Because it is so easy to use, it can contain too much

information at once.
It takes time to compile. Even though it is flexible, it takes time to put the
original draft together.
It can be expensive. Multimedia makes use of a wide range of resources,
which can cost you a large amount of money.
Too much makes it unpractical. Large files like video and audio has an
effect of the time it takes for your presentation to load. Adding too much
can mean that you have to use a larger computer to store the files.
In case you want to upload it onto the Internet, there are a few factors to
keep in mind, for example bandwidth and the users abilities.
The role of the teacher shifts from instructor to facilitator.
Students who are not as proficient with technology may have to spend
more time learning computer skills to access information than focusing on
course materials.
3.Uses of multimedia in teaching.

Through the interaction with multimedia,

the students become increasingly familiar with academic vocabulary and language
structure.

Connecting with the Internet will make the benefit of increased student motivation.

Students are eager to begin class and often arrive early at the computer lab, logging
on the Internet and beginning research on their own.

The students also often stay after class to continue working on the Internet.

students develop greater confidence in their ability to use English because they need
to interact with the Internet through reading and writing.

multimedia provides the students to gather information through media that encourages
their imaginations, interests.

using this technology combined with the sense of teaching will create a successful
teaching method.
