Poetry Album Project

(adapted from the Poetry Album Cover WebQuest)

Introduction

Imagine that you are a songwriter. Your next album is coming out very soon, but you are having
trouble writing the words for your songs. You come to a friend to help you find your muse
(inspiration). This is what your friend convinces you to do

Task

First, you will print out the lyrics to your favorite song and decipher through the poem the main
theme or message the writer conveys. Next, you will write two new poems that have this same
theme. One poem will be a Shakespearian/English sonnet (it does not need to be old-fashioned,
however) and one poem can be whatever you want (free verse, lyrical, etc.).

Next, you will design and create the cover of your new albumyou want to have creative control over
what your album will look like. Inside the album will be your favorite song and the three new and
original poems that you write.

Youre not finished yet! You also have to write the Poetry Statement for the inside cover of your
album. You want your fans to know all about you. You also want to give the song you developed your
poems after credit, and you want your fans to know why you chose to the song.

Process

1. Think of your favorite song that you have played over and over again. It should be a song that

has lyrics that mean something to you or that convey a strong message. It must also be school

appropriate. (If you are unsure if it is appropriate, choose a back-up song that is appropriate

and then ask me).

2. Print out the lyrics or write them out on paper.

3. Decide on the main theme of your song. Is it about falling in love? Losing something valuable?

Spending time with friends? Learning a life lesson?

4. Create two original poems that are centralized around them main theme of the song that you

chose. One of the poems must be an English Sonnet, the other poem is up to you.

5. Design an album cover to place them in. The front cover must include at least one of the

following: a picture, a computer-generated graphic, a drawing, or a collage. Be creative. If

you can, let your album cover convey the message from your poems.

6. When you are finished, you can make it all fit into a CD case, create a book, turn it in in a

folder, or staple it.

7. The project needs to be arranged in this order: album cover must come first, followed by the

song you chose, the sonnet, the second poem, then your personal statement (huge hint: refer to

the Poetry Statement Outline)
