I learned a lot in this course that I wasnt really expecting to learn.

registered for this course not knowing what to really expect, and on the first day of

class, when we were told we would be reading about monsters, I was honestly a bit

skeptical. I have never really been a fan of the horror genre of books or movies. To

me, horror was always a genre of pure entertainment and no real value. I couldnt

have been more wrong in that assumption.

Reading the material we read in this class, and discussing the different

cultural impacts associated with them was really eye opening for me. Finding a

connection with monsters and their plight is not something I would have every

thought to be possible, but it definitely is. I learned a lot about how authors and

storytellers can use monsters to speak about issues that impact every single one of

us. Issues of identity, race, sexual orientation, consent, family, background and self

are all explored within these stories and to really take a step back and analyze the

lessons learned from these stories is invaluable. I would highly recommend this

course to future students.
