INTRODUCTION
!
Jenifer is an immensely talented singer that Ive worked with for many years. Notably,
she was soprano 1 for Disneys prestigious Voices of Liberty. She has also traveled
the country extensively as a worship leader for a group called Women of Faith. Her
voice can be heard prominently in my Adagio Flow demo. I also recorded her for
Thomas Bergersens compositions Sonera and A Place in Heaven. This library marks
the first release in a series, exploring her voice in great depth. Ive taken great care to
capture the true emotional character of her singing. Jenifer is certainly one of the most
expressive and emotive instruments weve created to date.

Beyond exploring new sampling territory with this instrument, it is my hope that it will
introduce Jenifers voice to an even broader range of composers. The soaring
brightness of her voice is exceeded by her spirit and personality. You will not find a
more talented professional, or more open collaborator. I hope that many more
composers will consider hiring her as a result of using this instrument. With this in mind,

PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH

Solo vocals are incredibly hard to sample well. Pushing beyond phrases, making things truly
playable is a unique challenge. Quoting Troels, many times samples sound like Siri trying to
sing!! I wanted the instrument to be a true representation of Jenifers talent. For this reason Ive
avoided static recordings or sample frankenstein-ing. I recorded complete fluid phrases and
legatos, allowing Jenifer to sing naturally. This instrument has the emotional realism to sit out
front in a composition without compromise. Thats a tall order for any sample library.

ARTICULATIONS
!
The programming of Jenifer is very simple and intuitive. There are 3 Kontakt 5.3 nki files in the
instrument. Jenifer is not compatible with earlier versions of Kontakt.
!
1. Jenifer Legato
!
All legatos are captured as complete phrases for each interval. Youll hear the natural way she
sang each note, flowing from the interval transition to her sustain and vibrato. By pressing the
sustain pedal, Jenifer will sing a longer note. Generally I recommend using the naturallegato,
but depress your sustain pedal when a longer duration is needed. For slower tempos writing
with the sustain pedal entirely down will also work well.
Ah Legato (Key Switch C0) middle C = c3
There are two distinct Ah intervals in this articulation. Each is recorded with a natural arrival
sustain.

Velocity 1-50 Soft, flowing portamento Ah intervals
Velocity 51-127 Faster, lyrical Ah intervals

Ah Flower Legato (Key Switch C#0)
Musical intention is so important in sampling. Without it, things can start to sound bland and
uninspired. For this articulation, I asked Jenifer to think of the famous Flower duet. It is a
floating and operatic performance. There are also two distinct legato performances for this
articulation.

Velocity 1-75 Soft air-ee, Ah interval
Velocity 51-127 More pronounced, operatic Ah intervals

Uh Legato (Key Switch D0)
This is a very airy and flowing Uh legato. Her performance is deliberately restrained and
melancholy sounding.

2. Jenifer Phrases (Key Switch C0-A0)
Jenifer recorded a variety of phrases in different keys and styles. Rather than random
improvisations, I approached the phrases as if I were writing a piece for her. Theyre grouped
by key in phrase cells and have a consistent tempo/BPM. Youll quickly hear how the various
phrases work together in a cohesive manner. She is not singing in any particular language. I
chose syllables that worked for the flow and emotion I was after.

Phrases can be used in a variety of ways beyond their recorded tempo. For this reason they
are NOT synced to DAW tempo with time machine.
3. Jenifer Arcs (Key Switch C0-A0)

These are expressive notes of various durations. They are great for sketching out ideas. They
also make really interesting organic pads.

ABOUT JENIFER THIGPEN
With her soaring Soprano vocals and ability to transform her voice to fit
any genre, Jenifer Thigpen is an in-demand vocalist who has traveled
and performed extensively as an artist, background singer and worship
leader. She has also been featured on an extensive catalogue of
commercial recordings in a vast array of genres. She began her career
as a soprano with the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame touring
musical group TRUTH. Shortly thereafter, she was cast as a soprano for
the world renowned a cappella group The Voices of Liberty at Walt
Disney World, where she performed for 11 years. She has been a
background and featured vocalist for gospel artists Kirk Franklin, Sandi
Patty, Avalon, and Point of Grace, among many others. She traveled
and toured for 9 years as a worship leader for the nation's largest non-
denominational women's event, Women of Faith. She was featured on
Thomas Bergersen's #1 iTunes classical album Illusions as a lead vocalist
on the epic track A Place In Heaven as well as the powerful duet with
Colin O'Malley, Sonera. She continues to record, as well as perform
live, most recently with the Grammy-nominated group Broadway
Inspirational Voices, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and at
Carnegie Hall. She is based in New York City.
