Fore superstructure

Bismarck's massive fore superstructure stretchted from main artillery turret Bruno to the double
catapult amidships. Four secondary artillery turrets were placed around it. On the first level
(Aufbaudeck) half of the ship's heavy anti-aircraft artillery wa fitted, as well as two single
floatplane hangars and the funnel that took fumes from 12 boilers. Armored conning tower was
covered with a 7 m rangefinder cuppola, and on the foretop there was a 10,5 m rangefinder, both
of which were equipped with radar antennas.

Paravanes

Bismarck's eight paravanes (in

German referred to as "Ottergert")
were stored on supports between
the main deck and superstructure
level 01 (Aufbaudeck). They were
lowered and raised from the water
by four small cranes (each for a
pair of paravanes), stored on the
2nd breakwater (fore) and under
communication boats (aft).

Main aircraft hangar

The main hangar, also known as the Grossflugzeughalle, was situated on

the aft superstructure, beneath the main mast. Two Arado floatplanes could
be kept inside. On the front wall there were two sliding doors - starboard
inner and port outer, as well as 2 small "windows", making it possible for
the tail-planes to fit. On the roof there were supports for four
communication boats and the ship's bell. On the after part a small platform
for two searchlights was fitted, also an anti-aircraft fire direction post with a
4 meter rangefinder. The shelter for the crew of this post was beneath it,
inside the hangar.

Hangars No2 and No3

The two floatplane hangars, each with one Arado Ar-

196 inside, were positioned on both sides of the
funnel. On their roofs there were supports for
admiral's boats, long boat, cutters and yawls.

Funnel

Bismarck's only funnel stood on the aft part of the fore

superstructure. It had a searchlight platform fitted (4
searchlights, 2 single 2 cm mounts), as well as a
smaller aircraft crane platform underneath.

Arado Ar 196 floatplanes

During operation "Rheinubung" Bismarck carried 4 observation Arado Ar 196

floatplanes (of A-2 and A-3 versions). They were kept in 2 single hangars near the
sides of the funnel and one double hangar aft of the the catapult. Theoretically it was
possible to carry 2 more aircraft on the catapult but this possibility was never put into
practice. Moving the floatplanes within the hangars, the catapult and sea surface was
possible thanks to 2 pairs of cranes. In the drawings I visualised the T3+IH aircraft
(pilot: Unteroffizier Ernst Linge, observer: Leutenant Gunter Lademann). The 3
remaining machines were: T3+AK, T3+DL, T3+MJ.

Row boats

During operation "Rheinubung" Bismarck carried

the following row boats:
8.5 m cutter (8.5 m Kutter) - 2 of them, one
both sides of the port hangar roof
6.0 m yawl (6.0 m Jolle) - 2 of them, kept
inside the 2 cutters

Motorboats

During operation "Rheinubung" Bismarck carried the

following motorboats:
admiral's boat (Admiralsboot) - 2 of them, one on the
right side of the starboard hangar roof, the other on a
structure attached to port hangar
motor barkasse (Motorbarkasse) - 1 boat on the left
side of starboard hangar roof
communication boat (Verkehrsboot) - 4 of them, all
on the roof of the aft hangar

Cranes

The main cranes were placed on both boards in the middle section of the ship. They
were used for moving the boats and the Arado Ar 196 floatplanes.

C/34 38cm Cannons

There were eight 38 cm cannons on the ship,

mounted in pairs in four turrets, two on on the
bow, and two on the stern. The turrets were
named Anton, Bruno, Caesar and Dora, or
simply A, B, C and D. There were slight
differences between the turrets' appearance.

C/28 15 cm Cannons

Eight out of twelve 15

cm cannons on
Bismarck were
mounted in four
double turrets without
rangefinders, placed
on the main deck.
