Activity This learning activity will allow students to create a
visual representation of an actual event that
happened during a U.S. War. The visual
representation will give students a better way to
remember significant moments in History, while
incorporating humor and creativity. According to SOL
standards, students need to demonstrate knowledge
of both the Civil War and Revolutionary war. The
activity will be used as a way for students to
demonstrate their knowledge of the wars, the
important battles, and the people involved. The
teacher will list examples of significant moments and
people in both wars such as the Battles of Lexington
and Concord, the Battles of Saratoga, the First Battle
of Bull run, Abraham Lincoln, and The Emancipation
Proclamation to name a few. The students will then
choose one of two wars in U.S. history. It can be
either the Revolutionary War or the Civil War. From
either of these two wars, the student will choose a
key defining moment that happened in that war. The
key moment can be one of the examples that the
teacher provided or it can be one of the students
choosing. The students must pick something
significant that influenced the war to begin, a major
battle within the war, or an important person doing
something that had a major impact in the war. No
student will be able to pick the same topic. Once the
student chooses the topic, they will create a comic
strip to showcase that moment in time. The website
that will be used is www.pixton.com. The website
allows for all students to create comic strips and even
provides backgrounds and characters that directly
relate to the topic. The comic strips can be funny as
long as it accurately depicts what happened during
the war. The students will refrain from using any
inappropriate words or images in the comics. Upon
completion, we will create a timeline as a class of all
the comic strips created.
