immerse oneself in a live managerial situation in a business organizational set up
and document its learning and teaching potential in the form of a case. The case
should be related to an organizational concept and elaborated through live data
gathered in the organization. It is also to develop a scholar who may be in a
position to contribute to educational material in the form of teaching cases which
form the most important learning methodology in management education. The
teaching case should contain both the case and the teaching note. It is desirable
that the teaching case should be publishable. Similar to CIS, the Case writing will
be spread over two continuous terms. Case writing along with Teaching Note
must be completed before the Thesis Proposal is finalized.

All the rules and regulations as applicable to first year of Post Graduate students will

4.0 Performance & Evaluation

4.1 Academic Performance and Evaluation System
The evaluation of academic performance is based on varying combinations of the
following components:

a) Assignments, Quizzes, Class participation etc.

b) Project Work and or term paper(s)
c) Examinations
d) Seminars

While components (c) and (d) are mandatory, relative weights of the components
for a specific course will be at the discretion of the instructor. For EFPM level
courses, the evaluation scheme and the weights for each component in the
scheme vary from course to course. However, written examination/s with
minimum weight of 50% is compulsory for all the courses. The course instructor
has the option to choose the mode of written examination. It could be classroom,
open-book/closed-book or take-home examination /assignment. The evaluation
schemes for every course are conveyed to the students at the beginning of the
course along with the course outline.

4.2 Grading System

IIM Raipur follows a uniform grading system for the Post-Graduate Programmes
and EFPM to ensure high standards. The Grading System presently in vogue is
detailed below:

The Evaluation system has been designed to achieve the following:

a) Help teaching faculty to evaluate the progress of learning of each student;

b) Prescribe and promote certain acceptable and uniform standards of
Comprehension;
c) Encourage a healthy and constructive competition among the students.

The course faculty will have the discretion to assign weightages to various
components of evaluation in a course. The components of evaluation and their
weightages will be communicated to the student in the course outline for each
course.

IIM Raipur follows a system of continuous evaluation. Throughout the term, the
student will be tested on his/her ability to understand concepts, learn techniques
and apply them to problems in the real world. At each stage of the course, the
student would be in a position to assess his/her performance and take measures to
make improvements.

The grading system that will be used is a 10-point scale. Following is a

description of these grades:

Indian Institute of Management Raipur Page 14

EFPM Handbook 2015 Confidential

Letter Grade Grade Point Description

A+ 10 Exceptional
A 9 Excellent
A- 8 Proficient
B+ 7 Very Good
B 6 Good
B- 5 Fair
C+ 4 Satisfactory
C 3 Unsatisfactory
C- 2 Poor
D 1 Very Poor
F 0 Fail
I - Incomplete

For each component of evaluation, the faculty member will communicate the
performance of students through marks only. He would also communicate the
minimum, the maximum and the average marks for the class for each component.

At the end of the course, the faculty member will aggregate on all the
components of evaluation using the weights he has prescribed in the course
outline. He shall compute the weighted cumulative marks and give the
appropriate grade.

IIM Raipur follows a system of relative grading. This implies that the grade you
receive for your performance is relative to the grades obtained by the class as a
whole. It is therefore not uncommon to find a case where a student obtains a
grade of B for obtaining 75% marks; since, the class average was around 73%
marks. However, faculty members may prescribe some absolute limits to award
grades as well. For example, he may fix 30% marks as minimum marks for
obtaining a pass grade.

In each course, a student is thus awarded a letter grade only. The weighted
average for all courses taken by a student in the programme is called the
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Please note that the weights used to
compute CGPA are the number of credit hours for a course.

A student must satisfy the following conditions at the end of the Module 3 of the
first year to be eligible for promotion to second year of EFPM:

a) A minimum of GPA of 4.0 in each Module

b) A minimum CGPA of 4.5
c) A minimum GPA of 5.0 in the area specific courses at the end of Module
3
d) Not more than 2-Ds or 1 F

Students are advised to obtain their answer sheets from the EFPM Office
Programme Assistant/concerned faculty and seek clarifications (if any) from the
faculty. The EFPM Office will display on-line the grades obtained by all the
students in a particular term three weeks after the end of the term. The notice will
be displayed for 3 days during which students can verify the accuracy of the

Indian Institute of Management Raipur Page 15

EFPM Handbook 2015 Confidential

grades. After this period the grades will be finalised and informed to the students.
After the grade sheets are finalised by the EFPM Office, no request for re-
evaluation or change in grade will be entertained.

If a students attendance falls below the norms, grades as per the following rule
will be reduced:

Out of the total 20 sessions in a course if a student is absent for less than or equal
to 3 sessions there is no reduction in grade points; if a student is absent for 4-5
classes the final grade he/she has obtained will be reduced by one lower grade (
example: A- to B+); if he/she is absent for 6-8 classes, will be lowered by two
letter grades(example : A- to B) and if he/she is absent for more than 8 classes,
the students in such cases may be debarred from giving exams for that particular
course and given a F grade.

The scholars who does not fulfil the academic requirements of the programme.
The EFPM Chairperson/Committee may review the situation and may cancel the
requirements of the scholar.

The scholar whose registration has been cancelled on any grounds may file an
appeal to the director who in cancellation with the faculty council may like to
reconsider his /her case and take decision accordingly. The decision of the
Director on such appeal will be final & binding.

5.0 Comprehensive Examination

5.1 Objective
At the completion of all the requirements of coursework the student would have
to go through a comprehensive assessment through a written and oral
examination. This is to check his multi-disciplinary appreciation of management
as a domain of knowledge and his readiness to undertake original
interdisciplinary research to address current issues and concerns in the field of
management.

The comprehensive examination will focus on the following points:

A general understanding of basic and advance courses and their synthesis

into a multi-disciplinary approach to the field of management

An ability to convert current challenges in the field of management into

researchable problems and exhibit the capability to use appropriate research
tools and techniques.

The comprehensive examination will be held after completion of all the courses
including the Course of Independent Study and Case Writing.

Indian Institute of Management Raipur Page 16

EFPM Handbook 2015 Confidential

5.2 Comprehensive Examination (CE)

The exam will have two components written and oral. The written examination
will be of 4 hours duration and oral examination would last for three/four hours.
The written examination could be closed-book type or open-book type as decided
by the Examining Committee. (The pattern of examination need not be same for
every area and would be decided jointly by the Area concerned and the
Examining Committee).

The students will be advised to go through a set of reading material for preparing
written as well as oral examination. These reading materials will have at least 3
classic notes and 25 research articles from the journals classified by IIM Raipur.

The written portion of the comprehensive examination will cover the candidates
general area of specialization in sufficient depth to demonstrate his/her
preparation for conducting EFPM level research work. Each of the three
members of the Examining Committee will contribute one question to this
examination.

Comprehensive Examining Committee

There will be a three member examining committee for each eligible EFPM
student in the comprehensive examination. Each of the members is a faculty
member of the Institute from three different areas including one from the area to
which the student belongs. FPM Committee will jointly decide and approve the
modalities and design of the comprehensive examination case by case.

Grading of the Comprehensive Examination

Grading should be completed within seven days after the written examination.
Each member contributing a question will grade the answer to that question and
provide a specific, written evaluation of the quality and correctness of the answer.
Grades on individual questions should use same grade scheme to be used on the
comprehensive examination:

HP: High Pass

P: Pass
F: Fail

A grade P signifies the minimal acceptable performance expected from a EFPM

student. A F indicates that the answer is not up to the standards expected from
our EFPM students.

5.3 Time Limit for Comprehensive Examination

The student must complete the Comprehensive Examination (CE) within three months
after completing the course work phase. Under special circumstances, the date of CE
may be extended by up to a maximum of 3 months upon prior application from the
student. In case of unsatisfactory performance in the CE, one re-examination is
permitted. If the candidate fails to clear the CE, his/her registration will be cancelled and
will be terminated from the Fellow Programme.

Advisory Committee (TAC). This should be communicated to the EFPM office in
writing along with the consent of the concerned faculty member. The EFPM Chairperson
appoints the TAC in consultation with the student and the thesis advisor.

The TAC will consist of three members, including the thesis advisor, at least two of
which, must be from the student's area of specialization. The members are chosen to
contribute to the thesis research in a complementary manner and to provide help in
literature search, research design, model construction, fieldwork, and data analysis. An
expert or an academician from outside of IIM Raipur can also be member of the
committee provided he/she is interested in the topic of research and has published
research credentials in top class journals in the area of specialisation.

If the circumstances demand, the EFPM Chairperson may, in consultation with the
student and the Chairperson of the TAC, reconstitute the TAC. A Co-Chairperson TAC
will be appointed if TAC Chairperson proceeds on long leave or quits the services of the
Institute. However, he/she will continue as TAC member if he/she is interested and can
spare time to guide the scholars. In case he/she is not interested, he/she has to give in
writing expressing his/her inability to guide to the Chairperson FPM.

The role of TAC includes the following:

a) Supervise and guide continuously the EFPM student

b) Judging the adequacy of the research design for the Thesis Proposal
c) Attending thesis seminar to be presented by the students and to provide feedback
d) Providing written feedback on the draft thesis submitted by the student

6.3 Thesis Proposal

Each of the EFPM students will prepare thesis proposal and a synopsis of it and submit
hard and soft copies of both to the EFPM office. The hard copies of proposal and
synopsis will be forwarded to all the Thesis Proposal Evaluation Committee (TPEC)
members and soft copies to all the faculty members of the institute.

TPEC Members will submit their written comments to EFPM office within two weeks so
as to announce the date of presentation of EFPM student. All the comments received
from TPEC Members will be compiled by EFPM Office and the same will be circulated

Indian Institute of Management Raipur Page 18

EFPM Handbook 2015 Confidential

to all concerned. It is expected that the students during the presentation shall clarify all
the points raised by the members.

All the TPEC Members should attend the presentation and give their valuable
suggestions to improve the quality of the proposal. EFPM Office will take note of all the
points raised by faculty members as well as TPEC Members at the time of thesis
proposal presentation. This will be compiled and a formal letter will be issued to the
EFPM student to revise the thesis proposal in consultation with the proposed Thesis
Advisory Committee Members. The revised proposal will be sent to EFPM Office
through Thesis Advisory Committee.

Guidelines for Preparing Thesis Proposal and Presentation

The purpose of the Thesis Proposal and its presentation (Thesis Proposal Presentation) is
to provide a formal occasion for the student to receive feedback on, and gain approval of,
his or her thesis proposal and incorporate significant changes in direction based on
faculty input. It should also reflect a fairly advanced stage of study design for at least
part of the thesis.

Ideally, the Thesis Proposal Presentation must be passed by the end three months after
passing CE. There is no limit to the number of times a student may repeat a Thesis
Proposal Presentation, but the student's failure to fulfil this requirement within six
months after passing his CE will be considered as "unsatisfactory performance" and the
fellowship will be withheld until this requirement is satisfied. In exceptional
circumstances, the EFPM committee may consider extending this time limit by a
maximum of 3 months on receiving written recommendation from the Thesis Advisor.
Permitted leave without fellowship will be taken into consideration in calculating this
time limit.

The following steps must occur prior to the Thesis Proposal Presentation:

1. The EFPM Student must inform the EFPM Office that he or she is prepared to
schedule the Thesis Proposal Presentation

2. The EFPM Office will appoint a Thesis Proposal Evaluation Committee (TPEC) for
a students proposal

3. The EFPM Office must arrange with the TPEC and the student a mutually agreeable
date, time, and location for the Thesis Proposal Presentation.

4. The EFPM student must submit to the Thesis Committee, the scheduled Thesis
Proposal Presentation, a written thesis proposal, ordinarily consisting of 20-30 typed
pages.

6.4 Guidelines for Drafting Thesis Proposal

a. Content
The proposal should contain a survey of literature and context description on the
subject. Students should clearly state their research objectives, relate these to the
research in the area and problems in this context, develop a model or a set of
hypotheses, provide clear definitions, describe and defend the proposed research
methodology and highlight the potential contribution of the proposed study to
theory, practice, and research in the relevant area of management.

Indian Institute of Management Raipur Page 19

EFPM Handbook 2015 Confidential

The proposal should also include an overview of the intended publication planning
and contain the detailed research plan of at least one of the papers; a preliminary
research plan of at least a second paper, including evidence of feasibility of
methodology and data availability; and an overview of a third paper. It is
acceptable to present alternative possibilities for the third paper. If a paper has
already been submitted for publication, the manuscript should be included with the
proposal.

The following guidelines are proposed for proposal design:

a.1 Title
A brief specific designation of the subject of research. The title, by itself, should
give a good indication of what the project is all about.

a.2 Justification
Why is the research worth doing and what knowledge gap is expected to be
fulfilled?

a.3 Background
A brief summary of previous researches bearing most directly on the problem. A
full-scale literature review is not necessary, however, literature citations listed at
the end of the proposal may be included.

a.4 Objective
A logically arranged statement of the problem to be addressed by the research.
Include research questions and hypothesis

a.5 Methodology
How is the research proposed to be carried out. Include statement and justification
of the methodological philosophy focussed on:
a) Measures
b) Source of evidence
c) Data collection and
d) Data analysis

b. Proposal layout

b.1. General
The thesis proposal must be typed or word processed on A4 paper, with left and
right margins of at least 1" (2.5 cms). One and half spacing should be used with
both side printing. Make sure that your work is properly presented. The text should
be paginated throughout. Proofread it carefully in order to eliminate spelling and
typing errors, misquotation and unsatisfactory presentation.

b.2. Title Page

This should contain:
the full title of the thesis proposal
the full name of the candidate
the purpose for which the proposal is being submitted

b.3. Table of Contents

This should list all the main components of the thesis proposal. Each section
should be given a page number on the right hand side of the page.

b.4. Quotations

Indian Institute of Management Raipur Page 20

EFPM Handbook 2015 Confidential

Always quote accurately. Short quotations can be worked into the body of the text.
Longer (more than 4 lines) quotations should be indented and single spaced.
Indented quotations do not need "quotation marks". If your quotation has some
material omitted, indicate the omission with an ellipsis ( three dots). Interpolations
(ie. your own insertions or ellipses within quotations) should be enclosed in
[square brackets].

b.5. References
There are various systems for references (and for compiling a bibliography); the
important thing is to be consistent. It is best to clear it with your supervisor. IIM
Raipur follows Chicago style of referencing system.

The written proposal submitted 2-3 weeks in advance of the Thesis Proposal
Presentation should not be the first time the Thesis Committee has seen these ideas
presented by the student. At least the Thesis Advisor, and preferably the entire
Thesis Committee, should be consulted in advance to ensure approval in principle
of the topic(s) and to ensure their suitability for submission.

6.5 Guidelines for Thesis Proposal Presentation

At the Thesis Proposal Presentation the EFPM Student will present his/her proposal to a
panel invited to the presentation and constituted of:

a) The EFPM Committee including its Chairperson

b) Members of TPEC
c) Other faculty members from IIM Raipur and elsewhere invited by the EFPM Office
and the student to provide additional expertise in evaluating the research proposal
d) Other scholar/ students invited by the presenting student, including possibly one who
has agreed to take notes. Discussion will be limited, however, to the presenting
student, the TPEC and invited faculty.

The EFPM Chairperson shall initiate the Thesis Proposal Presentation proceedings with
the introduction of:

a) The EFPM Student and the topic of the thesis proposal

b) The Thesis Proposal Evaluation Committee
c) Rules and guidelines to be followed during the proceedings in respect of evaluation,
critique and querying and time management

The proposal presentation may be done using power point. The EFPM office would
make provision of the physical infrastructure after the decision of the date. The proposal
would take 30-45 minute oral presentation followed by discussion for an almost the same
time, wherein the student would elicit comments and criticism to the proposal.

Thereafter, the members of the evaluation committee will be given an opportunity to

speak and to discuss the thesis proposal with the EFPM Student. Each of these members
will be granted a maximum of 30 minutes for their contribution, including replies by the
EFPM Student.

Subsequently the audience will be given the opportunity to put questions to the EFPM
Student concerning the proposal. A maximum of 30 minutes will be allowed for
questions.

Indian Institute of Management Raipur Page 21

EFPM Handbook 2015 Confidential

The Chairperson of the evaluation committee then concludes the proposal evaluation
proceedings. In so doing, he or she explains the committees evaluation of the thesis
proposal and takes a position concerning any possible new aspects which have arisen as a
result of audience questions. This does not prevent the Chairperson from also discussing
the proposal with the EFPM student. A maximum of 30 minutes is allowed for the
Chairpersons discussion (including replies by the EFPM Student).

If desired by the EFPM Student an interval of 15 minutes may be given either between
the opposition expressed by the committee members or before allowing questions from
the audience. If the evaluation committee wishes to take a short period of consideration
following questions from the audience, a further interval may be given.

The EFPM Chairperson is responsible for ensuring that the time frames indicated are not
exceeded, and it should furthermore be emphasised that these are intended as maximum
limits. The presentation may never last for more than 3 hours.

6.6 Guidelines for Thesis Proposal Evaluation

At the conclusion, the Thesis Committee meets in closed session to discuss the
disposition of the proposal. No grade or ordinal evaluation is given. In evaluating the
student's performance at the presentation, the TPEC will take into account the quality of
the students presentation, the quality of the responses to questions from the TPEC, and
the written material included in the proposal. Possible results are: to Accept, Accept
Conditionally, or Reject the Thesis proposal. Conditional Acceptance means that the
student must meet certain specified conditions prior to obtaining unconditional approval
of the thesis proposal. Such conditions may include, for example:

a) demonstration of the students knowledge or facility in a particular methodology,

theory, or content area

b) demonstration of the availability of data needed to conduct the research

c) demonstration that the proposed research topic is original or endorsement of the

topic by an individual (e.g., faculty member) with expertise in a related field but not
present at the Orals.

The thesis proposal evaluation committee may decide how these contingencies can be
satisfied, either in writing, orally, by obtaining a course grade, or other means.

The evaluation committee must, within one week of the proposal, submit a final
recommendation to the EFPM Office including a written, comprehensively reasoned
statement as to what extent the Student has, through his or her proposal and presentation
demonstrated that he or she fulfils the requirements of the EFPM thesis proposal
requirements. The recommendation must be sent to the EFPM Office and must be signed
by all of the members of the evaluation committee.

Should any weaknesses or strengths of the proposal appear during the presentation
proceedings to which the committee feels it has not given (sufficient) consideration in its
preliminary opinion of the thesis proposal, the committee must include these new aspects
in its final recommendation.

If the Committee is not unanimous in delivering a favourable recommendation, the

preliminary recommendation of the Committee will be sent to the student, who will have
the opportunity of expressing his comments within two weeks time. Following this, the

Indian Institute of Management Raipur Page 22

EFPM Handbook 2015 Confidential

final recommendation will be delivered. Consideration must also be shown for the
justifiable expectation of the EFPM Student to be informed as to whether the
presentation has been satisfactory, and thus whether the TPEC intends to recommend
that he or she may proceed with the idea presented in the proposal.

The EFPM Chairperson would communicate, to the EFPM student in writing and within
one month of the presentation, the evaluation of the thesis proposal along with, if
necessary conditional provisions, for start of the research work.

6.7 Thesis Research

Under the TAC's guidance, the student pursues independent and original research
towards preparation of a thesis. The thesis may require field investigation and
observation to ascertain and impartially report facts and issues of significance to
organizations and institutions. The thesis should include effective analysis and evaluation
of relevant data to yield independent and significant conclusions.

6.8 Research Progress Report

In order to promote a healthy system for tracking academic progress of the students and
to facilitate the EFPM Committee to take timely remedial actions, if any required, a
monthly reporting system has been introduced for students from III year onwards. Each
student will be requested to submit progress report in a prescribed form duly signed by
the supervisor to the EFPM Office. EFPM Committee will critically review this progress
report.

In case the Committee feels that the student has not made satisfactory work, he will be
given three months time to improve his performance failing which his scholarship may
be terminated and he will be given further three months time. Even if he does not show
any improvement, he will be terminated from the program. The Committee can revoke
the termination of scholarship if the Committee feels that the student has improved and
this can be effective from the date of review.

6.9 Guidelines on Writing of Thesis

The suggested guidelines are based on Kate L. Turabian's Manual for writers of Term
papers. Thesis and Dissertation (Chicago: The University press, 1973). The manual is
designed as a guide to suitable style in the typewritten presentation of formal papers in
both scientific and non-scientific fields. The writer who is preparing a work for
publication in a printed form should however consult the twelfth edition of A Manual of
Style (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1968).

Parts of the Thesis

The thesis is made up three parts: the front matter (normally referred to as prelims), the
text and the reference matter. These parts may consist of several sections, but the number
of sections naturally depends upon the length and complexity of the thesis. The order
should be as follows (of course parts may be omitted but this order should be
maintained).

6.10 Pre-requisite for Thesis Defence

Before submitting the doctoral draft thesis, students will be required to have at least two-
research articles' acceptance for publication in a referred Journal as classified by IIM
Raipur based on their research work. However, if the students publishes in A Class
Journal as classified by IIM Raipur, publication of one paper will be considered adequate
for submitting the thesis.

6.11 Draft Thesis

The student submits one copy of the approved draft thesis duly signed by the TAC
members to the EFPM office. The draft thesis needs to be submitted before proposing the
thesis seminar.

6.12 Thesis Seminar

The thesis seminar needs to be presented by the candidate only after s/he submits the
approved draft thesis to the EFPM Office. Before submitting the final thesis for defence
the student presents a seminar on the research to disseminate the findings to stimulate
research work in the area. The seminar also provides an opportunity to obtain feedback
from the institute's academic community including the TAC towards better
presentation and findings. These suggestions have to be included in the final thesis.

The student should give at least two weeks notice to the EFPM office for arranging the
seminar in the interest of better participation from the institute's academic community.

6.13 Final Thesis Submission

After incorporating all the suggestions provided in the Thesis Seminar, the student
submits the final thesis along with a detailed abstract of the thesis not exceeding 10
pages (both soft and hard copies) and signed approval forms by all the TAC members to
the EFPM Office within three months from the date of the thesis seminar.

6.14 Thesis Examination Committee

When a student is ready to submit his/her 6 copies of thesis work, he/she requests the
EFPM Chairperson to appoint the Thesis Examination Committee (TEC). The EFPM
Chairperson, in consultation with the TAC Chairperson, appoints the TEC consisting of
two members of the TAC and two eminent external experts preferably one from abroad,
to be taken from experts' list submitted by the TAC Chairperson. TAC Chairperson will
submit a panel of eight external experts with complete contact details of which four
should be experts from abroad in case s/he refers to get thesis evaluated from abroad.
External experts must have published research credential in top class journals in the area
of specialisation. The role of TEC includes the following:

a. Examining the thesis work

b. Conducting an oral thesis defence examination.

6.15 Non Completion of the programme and extension

The stipulated period for completion of the course is 4 years for a regular student. One
year of extension will be given to regular students subject to the recommendation of
Chairman of TAC and due deliberations in the EFPM Committee. No further extensions
will be allowed but under exceptional cases the extension might be given for one more
year. Students unable to complete the programme within 6 years of enrolment will be
terminated from the programme and their registration will be cancelled.

6.16 Others
Exceptional cases, which are not covered by these regulations, will be referred by the
Chairperson of the TAC to the EFPM Chairperson for consideration. Executive Fellow
Programme committee along with a representative of the doctoral student will take the
final decision on any referred matter.

7.0 Award of EFPM Title

The student shall complete the following requirements before qualifying for the award of
the title:

a. Submit required number of copies of the thesis and abstracts.

b. Obtain clearance form from various functionaries of the institute as per guidelines
with the EFPM Office.

For getting the award at least three members of TEC should declare the student's thesis
work is seminal and recommend for the award.

On qualifying for the award of the title, students receive the title of "Executive Fellow of
the Indian Institute of Management Raipur" at the forthcoming annual convocation.
Meanwhile, a provisional certificate can be given on the student's request.

The students are expected to receive the title in person.
