1. Introduction

The radiation storage container is designed to meet requirement of Vietnam Law and
storage safety Requirements as following :
Ensure the safety and the security
To ensure consistency in the management of security and safety of radioactive sources.
Maximum ability prevention from weather conditions.
Made ability to move the source storage depot if request by Rawthan building owner

The assumption for design of radioactive sources depot that use the highest leakage dose
rate (when the source got maximum activity) and with the maximum number of sources for
calculation to ensure the safety in all circumstances.

However, in practical, the radioactive source activity always decreases with time (half-life
of 74 days for Ir-192) and never use all source at the highest activity at the same time. So the
Actual dose rate will much less than calculation in this document. Radiation safety condition
There for is always guaranteed.

2. Scope of apply

The radiation source is Ir-192 to be used for Radiographic Testing.

Ir-192 Source to be contained in Projector type 880 Delta.
Normally, maximum Ir-192 Source Activity when imported into tunisia is 100 Ci
(4 TBq).
Projector type 880 Delta dose rate measured at 1.0 meter when it got maximum
activity less than 5.7 Sv/h.

3. Applicable Documents

Law of Nuclear Power No. 18/2008/QH12 Issued date 03/06/2008

Circular No. 19/2012/TT-BKHCN, on controlling and ensuring radiation safety in
occupational exposure and public exposure.

4. Description of Radiation Storage Depot

Dimension of sources pit are 0.5m wide, 0.5m long and 0.2m wall thickness of
concrete, 0.4m high for all around radiation shielding, it cover with 3.0mm thickness
of lead (Pb) reinforced with 5mm thick steel sheet and frame for radiation shielding
at top.
The 2m height surrounding fence which is settled at 2m distance from the Storage
depot (Pit) wall.
To be at area under security surveillance and control.
Storage depot shall have security lock at door.
Storage depot shall have Radiation Warming Sign.

5. The applicable data

The maximum activity contained in the Projector 880 Delta is 100Ci.

Dose rate at 1 m from Projector 880 Delta 5.7 Sv/h.
Total sources intend to be used is 02.

Limited Dose Rate Allowance for Public at the fence of the depot:
Referred to No. 19/2012/TT- BKHCN Circular on Controlling and Ensuring
Radiation Safety in Occupational Exposure and Public Exposure, Article 7 - Designing
radiationcovers, Paragraph 2: Radiological works must apply the dose limit of
occupationalradiation that is smaller than or equal to 3/10 of the dose limit
Thedose limit of occupational radiation according to No. 19/2012/TT- BKHCN :
1 000(Sv/year) * 3/10= 300 (Sv / year)
Intended the hours of Public under exposing 730 hours per year (For Supervisor,
NOT Radiation Worker, 02 hour/day, 365 days/year).
For Rawthane building, at specified depot location, Limited Dose Rate Allowance for
public 300/730 = 0.41 Sv/h (at Fence).
Radiation Haft Value Layer of the steel for Ir-192: T steel = 13.0 mm.
Radiation Haft Value Layer of the concrete for Ir-192: Tconcrete = 43.2 mm.
Radiation Haft Value Layer of the Lead (Pb) for Ir-192: T lead= 5.1 mm.
Thickness of Lead (Pb) on cover is 3mm.
The concrete wall thickness of of the depot for shielding radiation : d = 0.21m
The arrangement of depot to and depot dimension as show in attached drawing.
6. Determining the safety distance
The dose rate after shielding material layer is calculated by formula :

The dose rate I2 at the distance d2 is calculating follow dose rate I1 at the distance d1 by
formula :

Where :

d : The distance at the positions which the dose rate shall be calculated (m).
T : The shielding wall thickness (mm).
T: The half value thickness of the material (mm).
I : The dose rate will be calculated.
1) Total dose rate of all 2 sources inside the depot at distance of 1m,
I0 = 02 sources * 5.7 Sv/h = 11.4 Sv/h
2) Dose rate after concrete shielding layer thickness, T = 200mm, Point [1] on diagram :
After shielding concrete layer, at the distance 1m, use formula (1) :
( 1) = 11.4 2210/43.2 = 0.39 Sv/h

At the outside surface of concrete shielding layer, d [1] =0.45m, use formula (2) :
12
( 1) = 0.39 = 1.8 Sv/h
0.462

Conclusion :

The dose rate at the outside surface shielding concrete layer (point 1) is 01.8 Sv/h
=> Dose rate SAFETY ENOUGH.

3) The dose rate at the fence :

The dose rate at fence d = 2.46m, Point [3] on diagram, formula (2) :
12
( 2) = 0.39 = 0.06 Sv/h (<0.41 Sv/h)
2.462

Conclusion :

The dose rate at the fence is 0.06 Sv/h. This dose rate is safety.
4) Dose rate at cover after lead shielding layer, T = 3mm, Point [3] on diagram :

Dose rate after lead (Pb) shielding layer at the distance 1m, use formula (1) :
( 1) = 11.4 23/5.1 = 07.62 Sv/h

Dose rate at surface of the upper cover, at the distance d [3] = 0.4m, Point [3]
on diagram, use formula (2) :
12
( 3) = 7.62 = 30.48 Sv/h
0.52

5) Dose Rate above the cover, Point [4] on diagram :

At the upper space of cover, at distance d [4] = 2m, use formula (2) :
12
( 4) = 7.62 = 01.90 Sv/h
22

This dose rate is less than 1.9 Sv/h, safety for Radiation worker.

Conclusion :
Above space of depot cover, at the distance 2m is enough safety for radiation worker.

7. Conclusion

The designed radiation storage depot is satisfied the safety requirement.

The distance 2m for the fence location with the calculated dose rate is satisfied the
Limited Dose Rate for Public.
In any circumstance, the dose rate measured by survey meter at the fence and shall
be less than the Limited Dose Rate for Public.

8. Additional shielding
When the source got high activity (50-100Ci), use addition 3.0mm thickness of lead
sheet for shielding, it may use more with bag of scrap lead to provide more shielding
to reduce dose rate.

9. The arrangement of the radiation depot
