Year Level: 1 Date:

Topic: Counting, ordering and skip counting numbers

Content Description:
Recognise, model, read, write and order numbers to at least 100. Locate these numbers on a
number line (ACMNA013)
Develop confidence with number sequences to and from 100 by ones from any starting point. Skip
count by twos, fives and tens starting from zero (ACMNA012)
Represent and solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of strategies
including counting on, partitioning and rearranging parts (ACMNA015)

Achievement standard:
Students count to and from 100 and locate numbers on a number line. Students describe number
sequences resulting from skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s (The Australian Curriculum, v8.1, 2016).

Lesson Objectives:
Students will:
1. Recognise numbers from 1 to 100 and order them accordingly
2. Use concrete materials to explore counting from 1 to 100
3. Begin using skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to create groups of materials

Assessment:
Observing student participation during whole class activities
Moving around to group work and using questioning for students to demonstrate their
understanding

Support:
Focus on earlier numbers i.e. 1-20 and count by ones if finding it difficult to skip count
Buddy system to support those who require assistance
Extend:
Counting in twos, fives and tens from any starting point
Challenge students to make larger group numbers by adding groups together
Begin subtracting smaller groups away from larger groups

Lesson Outline
Introduce
Children are seated so they can see the picture book on the floor
Read the book Follow the line stopping at each page so students can practice counting the different
objects in the book. Count some pages as a class and some pages individually.
Question How else can we count that might be quicker than counting each number? (Skip counting
in 2s, 5s, 10s)

(Approximately 15 mins)

Explore
Activity 1 Ordering on a number line
Students to be seated in a circle in groups of 5 with a number line in the middle of the circle from 1
to 20. Each student will be given a different number from 1 through to 20.
With the person next to you, compare numbers and discuss whose is bigger or smaller. Do
these numbers have any similarities?
Students to place their numbers on the number line
(Approximately 10 mins)

Activity 2
Students seated at table individually with various materials in the middle
Provide students with a range of materials that they can group (counters, dice, match sticks, pop
sticks, toys)
Ask students to group different items into 5 different groups sizes (2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 20 etc.)
Order these groups from smallest to largest.
Students to join with the student next to them join together different groups previously created
and count how many you now have in each group. Order these from smallest to largest.

*Encourage skip counting by 2s and 5s and 10s when adding groups together*
(Approximately 25 mins)

Conclude
Students seated back on the carpet in a circle
Discuss with students counting strategies. Watch video Counting by tens, twos and fives
(http://live.lms.skwirk.com.au/#/contentPreview/312256?y=38)
In a circle, practice skip counting in 2s. Have every second student put their hand up, the students
with their hands up, i.e. (2,4,6,8) say their number LOUD whereas all the students in between can
whisper theirs.
Conclude next lesson we will continue practicing counting by twos and begin counting by fives.

(Approximately 10 mins)
