The Scarlian

Volume 71 December 2016

Happy Christmas to All Scarlians

Collection was 210.70 in total to be divided between Beaumond House and the Emmaus Trust.

6th of October was National Poetry Day

Tina Paris read a selection from her book, Still shines the
Sun at St Helenas Church, South Scarle.

It was a most enjoyable afternoon. At times both amusing

and moving.

Thank you Tina

Poppy Appeal
Once again I wish to thank the generous people of South Scarle for their contributions towards The
Royal British Legion poppy appeal. The amount raised this year came to 252.65 when added to
the total collected by the district amounted to 4264. This shows the way people in general respect
the Royal British legion and the work it does towards the debt we owe not only to the injured, but
the many other ways in which the monies are used. Thanking everyone, Terry Jacklin Chairman

How we pay for SSCC

The SSCC has been running for two complete financial years now, and so we have a clearer view
of what the average annual running costs are. This is just a quick update to make sure that
everyone is 'in the loop' on how things are going.
SSCC runs on a not-for-profit basis. We are required to keep a 5000 contingency fund so that
can cover emergencies. The bills for the running of the building are split on a 75/25 basis between
the SSCC and church respectively, so it is important that SSCC keeps enough in the bank over
and above the contingency fund to ensure that its 75% share of the heating, lighting, maintenance
and cleaning bills can be paid.
In order to keep the finances steady, we do need to be sure that room hires are charged for
correctly and consistently, and this is just an outline of the booking terms:

Room Hire charges

Where an event is run for benefit to include both the church and SSCC - there is no room hire
charge since the costs are covered for both.
If the event is run but the beneficiaries do not include the SSCC then the room hire charges are
payable, even if the Church is a beneficiary, otherwise the SSCC runs at a loss.

Insurance
The hirer also needs to take out liability insurance for any event that sells tickets where the
recipients do not include St Helena's Church.
If the church is a recipient, the hirer may take advantage of Church Insurance but in order for
Church Insurance conditions to be fulfilled then the event must be wholly accounted through
the PCC accounts, otherwise it becomes void.

We have always asked that posters advertising events that sell tickets always clearly state who the
beneficiaries are so that people attending the events know what they are supporting.

The annual accounts are available to you all and if you would like to have access to them at any
time, do please contact Chris Baker. If you have any other queries regarding room hire or
insurances, any member of the committee will be happy to help.

Net profit from Harvest Festival was 272. Collection of 103.70 has been sent to Newark
Emmaus Trust. Florence

My
Paralympic
Experience
Mike Chandler

This year has been a memorable one for me, not least because I had the opportunity to go to the
Paralympics in Rio with the British Canoeing Paralympic team.

I work for British Canoeing, as Coach Development Manager (many people know of Deb and I because of
the boats which adorn the top of our car regularly!), and my role usually sees me coaching the coaches to
support them to become better in what they do, working with our National Governing Body to develop Canoe
sport from grass roots upwards, and looking after the professional development of our coaching staff.

The planning for the Rio Olympic cycle started before the Games actually took place in London in 2012 and
has seen the accumulation of 4 years of hard work by athletes, coaches and support staff it really is a team
effort. In Olympic year there are lots of other jobs to do alongside your own and during this cycle I took on
the lead role for looking after the athletes nearest and dearest. This involved me working with both athletes
and their families to agree what their contact would be during the Games, what would happen in emergency
events and how to get them in the same place to celebrate, hopefully!!

I also took on a special role with the Paralympic team - 2016 was the first time that Canoe sport was
included at the Paralympics and so the first time that we sent a team. All of the 6 athletes that we took to the
Games had incredibly moving and uplifting stories behind their disabilities, and I have to say were inspiring
to be around.

I worked with the coaches in the run up to the Games to ensure that they were on top of their game too in
terms of delivering the best performance we could in the 6 events we took part in. This involved me taking
the team for a weekend in the mountains in Wales, team building, running a simulation exercise to help them
deal with unexpected or crisis situations, and spending time with the team for development. We went out to
Belo Horizonte, the British holding camp, in January for our first training camp out there and got used to the
altitude, heat.and rain (every day)!!

The three weeks that I spent at the Games in September were amazing and inspirational. The atmosphere
was great and it was fantastic to see the support that built for the athletes during the course of the
competition. This was undoubtedly helped by the brilliant achievement of the Para-canoeists. In the 6 races
we competed in we won 3 gold medals and 2 bronze medals what a start to Para-canoeing as an Olympic
sport. The only downside for me was that I had to watch the races
through a 4 screen as I was responsible for videoing each athlete
a small price to pay to be there to witness such achievement and
pure joy in the athletes. The Games were a fantastic experience
and I even got to travel home on Victorious, the gold nosed plane
with the athletes and coaches.

Its onwards and upwards now as we started planning for Tokyo,

2020 before we headed out to Rio and so were all focussed on
the funding announcements 9 Dec and then hopefully a funded
programme for the next 4 years, before taking on the rest of the World out in Tokyo.

Another success and

great fun.

From The Chairman

Firstly, may I say how disappointed I was, as no doubt many of you were, to find that that some
small minded hooligan thought it clever to deface the village sign by spraying green paint over it,
totally obliterating South and spraying paint around Scarle.
Being somewhat incapacitated at present and unable to help I would like to express both my own
and the Parishes thanks to Brian Bancroft who took it upon himself to rectify the situation by
cleaning off the offending paint.
Thank you Brian
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mo, your editor and David her social secretary
for all the hard work they put in to the production of our beloved Scarlian. Long may it continue in
such safe hands.
May I finally take the opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a prosperous and
above all peaceful New Year. Best wishes David

From the Chairman with disgust.

You all know Mel and Graham from Washtub Cottage and as you know Graham is far from well
and Mel is under severe pressure caring for him This they dont need, On the night of the 12th
December some amoebic excuse for a human took it upon themselves to steal Mel and Grahams
galvanised dolly peg tub planter from outside their front gate. I found this mindless theft beyond
comprehension and sincerely hope it was no villager or child of a villager having a laugh If any
one knows anything appertaining to this theft please let me know. This is the second time over the
last couple of weeks we have mindless vandalism and it will not be allowed to continue. It has been
reported. David A very disappointed chairman

Phase III of St Helenas re-ordering and rejuvenation

We are planning two projects in a Phase III to make the Community Space in St Helena even more
comfortable and useful

Firstly, we would like to install a glass and oak door as an outer door on the porch. This would cut
down the draught hugely making the space more comfortably by keeping the heat in, and saving
energy.

Secondly, we would like to install a ringing floor in the tower. This would not only make ringing the
bells a good deal easier, but it will give a much needed area, in the base of the tower, for
permanent storage without interfering with the bell ringers. A spin off would be less draught from
the tower, and more energy conservation.

Planning permission for St. Helena's alterations etc. has been granted in full.

Foodbank
Due to a slowing down of giving for the Newark Foodbank collection over recent months I thought it
would be a better idea to make the collection on a 2 monthly basis instead of monthly. We have
been collecting now for nearly 3 years and after having had a discussion with the Foodbank they
recognise that this is probably a case of Donation Exhaustion and think that 2 monthly would be
the way to go. So after our collection at the coffee morning on 10th December we will move to 2
monthly, making the following collection on the 11th February. The Foodbank in Newark have been
streamlining their operation and earlier this year moved the warehouse to a more convenient
position. The need for food banks is still important. They cater for people who have slipped
through the net due to changes in the benefits system and for people who find themselves in a
crisis due to loss of job, relationship break-up and/or mental health problems. Recipients of the
Foodbank are always referred by a professional and initially receive 3 days worth of emergency
supplies. Foodbank will concentrate on specifically needed items in future and a new list of
needed items will be included in the Scarlian or Scarlian Snippets (alongside my writing on wipe
board too) to get the message across. Could I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has
supported the Foodbank and to let any new supporters know that their donations would be very
welcome. Thank you and best wishes Brian (893419).

Swan Canaries

Absolutely brilliant are the words I would use to

describe the performance afforded us by the Arletty
Theatre company. The performers Helen Fullerton,
Emily Vinnicombe, Laura Mae Mellor and Fiona Paul
gave a wonderful performance of this musical play
about the Chilwell Canary Girls of Word War 1. They
not only performed their own parts excellently but also
motivated the audience into joining in with the singing,
which was great fun and put the light-hearted side to a
very serious subject.
Arletty Theatre is a Nottingham based theatre company
run by artistic director (and writer of Swan Canaries)
Imogen Joyce ably assisted by Maddy Mandal who is
their administrative manager and music tsar.

The Big Band Experience

The 12th of November saw the second visit of the Toothill Comp Big Band to the South Scarle
Community Centre. The Band enthralled all present with their fantastic renditions of Glen Millers
music and the music of other well-known bands. All members of the Band were superb and the two
soloists Lucy Kent and Ewan Wilson were very confident in their performances. Members of the
audience, many participants in the Village Dance School, took full advantage to display their
dancing prowess. The evening raised 160 towards St Helenas Church and 160 towards Cancer
Research UK. A very enjoyable time was had by all.

Our Broadband Promise

Broadband is planned for South Scarle as part of our programme, extending the existing fibre
network to the village. Each premise will have access to a fibre to the premises solution with
speeds of up to 330 Mbps. Works are planned to be completed by June. Im aware that residents
in South Scarle suffer from poor quality phone lines. So it is particularly good news that the solution
planned is for fibre to the home, meaning that fibre optic cable will run all the way to the home and
at no point will rely on the existing telephone lines. Via David Duffield SSPC
