The Scarlian

Volume 70 Autumn 2016

Unexpected Visitors

Chinooks

Just to confirm that 2 RAF Chinooks did land on the airstrip on 15th July in the afternoon.
One had suffered a bird strike and had to land in order to perform a small procedure just to be sure
it was ok.
The crews were very pleasant and they stayed for approx 10 minutes before taking off and last
seen heading South.
The last big helicopter to land on the airstrip was along time ago and belonged to Al Fayed of
Harrods. It stayed for the afternoon as someone was attending a funeral.

Oxfam Garden Party
I am so very pleased to be able to tell you that at Kate's Garden Party 478.34 was raised for Oxfam. The
generosity of the people of South Scarle was astounding. Not only did they help out on the day and come
to eat cakes and drink tea, but also they donated amazing gifts for the raffle that raised over 200.

Of course it couldn't have happened without the vision, hard work and commitment of Kate and Ollie, who
have been working like beavers for weeks to have their garden, paddock, meadow and wood in beautiful
condition for visitors. Oxfam owes them a huge "thank you".

It was a lovely day, and I do so appreciate the contribution of everyone who made it happen.

(Extract from an official letter)

Matt Shephardson sang and how he sang ! A most enjoyable evening which raised 119 for the
Newark Patriotic Fund.

The Community Centre Management Committee would like to thank David and Judith Duffield who
have bought and fitted a Paper Towel Dispenser and toilet roll holder in the toilet at the Church
/Community Centre. Elaine

2
South Scarle Scurry/Fun Run

South Scarle Scurry took place on Sunday 3rd July

2016. Fourteen year-old Harrison Fairhurst, was the
first junior home and also the overall winner in a fast
time of 8.36 minutes, closely followed in second place
(and 1st adult) by Paul Cartwright in 8.51 minutes.
Jane Fairhurst took third place overall (and 1st lady) in
a time of 9.33 minutes. The course went round the
block (from the church on Main Street, Swinderby
Road, Plot Lane, Amos Lane and back on Main Street),
a distance of 1.2 miles.
Some brave souls "dressed up" for the occasion,
including Two Old Cards, the Ninja Scarecrow and a
Welsh Dragon.
Thank you to everyone who took part, Philip Clements for starting the Scurry and judging the fancy
dress, the stewards on the course, and to Mrs Betty Clements for sponsoring the prizes.
A total of 70.50 was raised and donated to our village church, St Helena's.

Cream Teas

The cream teas raised 401 for St. Helenas Church. Many thanks to everyone, helpers and those
who enjoyed our labours. Lyn Broughton.

Pop goes the Organ

It was a beautiful day, the church looked wonderful and the music we
enjoyed was absolutely splendid. Everyone was full of praise for the
event. To add to the music there was a delicious tea and much chatting.
251 was also gifted in donations towards the church fund. A huge
thanks you to all of the helpers. Judy

Hare Coursing:

Now all the fields around the village have been harvested, illegal hare coursing is taking place
again. If anyone sees groups of two or more men (and occasionally even families!) with
lurcher/greyhound type dogs, and probably accompanied by vans and/or four wheel drive vehicles
or pick-ups, please report ALL sightings to the police by telephoning 101 as soon as possible,
preferably while it is happening. Especially please note and report the vehicle registration numbers.
These people are usually on the land around South Scarle without permission, and the police are
now giving hare coursing (hunting hares with dogs) a much higher priority, and will attend an
incident straight away if they can. Reporting every single incident also helps to give our area
increased priority for rural policing. Information, especially vehicle registration numbers and clear
descriptions of the people involved, often helps towards arrests as the people or vehicles involved
can be wanted for other crimes. We carry our mobile phones with us and take a photo of the
vehicle if we can. 101 is the number for simply reporting these types of incidents, obviously 999
should only be used in an emergency!
Operation Galileo started on 1st September 2016. It is jointly run by several Police forces including
Lincolnshire, to combat hare coursing, and the criminal activity of those involved. They have a free
and anonymous text service for reporting hare coursers. It is important to include the vehicle
registration number and any other details. Text HARE followed by vehicle details to 80800. The
service is partly funded by farmers and the NFU (National Farmers' Union). The texts are
anonymous and free!!

Anita Clements

Stop Press! This week a vehicle has been confiscated the owners having been reported first to
Anita and by her to the police. Keep up the good work. It is worth reporting and eventually these
people will discover that they will not be tolerated in South Scarle (editor)

My daughter Rachel who used to live

in the village had grade three-breast
cancer last year and had a very rough
year. On the 30th July this year she
married Jamie Raikes. She left South
Scarle for the ceremony at North
Collingham church. Her reception at
was at Collingham Football club.

THE INAUGURAL SOUTH SCARLE QUIZ on FRI SEPT 2nd
The Quiz, held on Pub Night, was great fun. Ollie and Kates blood pressure rose steadily as more
and more people arrived and more tables had to be squeezed in. Eventually, thirteen teams took
part, including visitors from Collingham, South Clifton, Eagle and Cromwell.
The quiz included pictures, anagrams, local knowledge - and three music rounds, delivered with
invaluable help from Craig Law who downloaded many obscure, memory-jogging tracks. Steve
Clementss superb sound system brought the music to life on the night. Ann and Roger Clay
played a blinder on the bar as usual, and Mel and Graham Scotney provided some tasty nibbles for
the teams.
First prize of six bottles of wine was won by the Cat-Nappers including Trish, Hilary and Florence
from the village and their guests from Cromwell.
The visiting team from South Clifton and the Post Office Laners from the village won second and
third prizes of luxury biscuits.
62.00 from quiz entries was raised for Cancer Research UK.
Ollie did a magnificent job of presenting the quiz and keeping the occasionally unruly crowd in
order, supported by his glamorous assistant Kate and formidable master-scorer Mike Bossart.
Thanks to all who helped.
