Subject; Analysis and Recommendation of < Charles Martin in Uganda; What to do when a
manager goes native>

Background about case

Firstly, we need to know about Hydro Generation is a US- based specialist in power
generation. Charles Martin who is 29 year -old American has been appointed by HG to control
the initial stage of the building a big dam in Uganda. Vice President is James Green who
wondered whether to go on to hire Martin in Uganda for the building phase of the design.
Hydro-Generation based firm expert in power dams. Workers have a high-level degree of
authorization, being totally answerable for their works. Hydro-Generation want to create first
project in Africa. James Green is a vice president and project manager. Charles Martin is an
expert in African Studies. Uganda is an African country which people speaks English, Bantu and
Nilotic. A major of people are Christian, however, some of them are Muslim. Nepotism is the big
problem in Uganda which Highly corrupt by government. According to Hofstede`s Dimensions;
High Power distance, collectivism, short-term orientation appears in this case.
Charles Martin who has an African education and he has some experience and knowledge how
to work in Uganda. It is an advantage. He combined his education of African society and culture
to manage HG`s project in Uganda.
Statement of the problems
From my point of view there are huge culture difference between Uganda and U.S. It creates
culture shock. On the other hand, destroying government actions. Confiscation or expropriation
is the problem. I observed and find civil discomfort problem. There are Systemic, Distributive,
Procedural and Catastrophic Political risk.
Some problem where I observed in this case
I saw that the first problem is language problem. In Uganda English is official language.
However, there is a problem which many people speak other languages. Language is problem
because a foreign company which Hydro Generation wants to set up a company in Uganda.
However, communication is the primary problem because there are many various languages. In
Uganda people use languages which they based on indigenous languages. The second problem

is in Uganda which government assistance nepotism and it is think that to be one of the most
corrupt countries in the world. I cannot say exactly which it is beneficial for Uganda`s
population. However, I think there are not many government arrangements on the governance
of business which it creates positive environment for doing business in Uganda. For second
problem, we can say violent political history or just nepotism. The third problem is class
discrimination. If there is nepotism of course there is also discrimination. I want to add this
information people are cover with bribe. The other problem is religious. There are many
different religions which create problem. There are not so many legal opportunities. I want to
add this idea from my view if a country is devout too much their religion there are always so
many problems. One of the most important problem in Uganda is people are much godly their
faith and culture. Business In Uganda moves silently. Unemployment is high and hiring process
is

Charles Martin`s duties

1. Get assistance and important authorization from the Ugandan authorities and
influenced villagers for the dam building.
2. Establish an office and employ worker, clear products for clients, monitor logistics

According to Charles Martin`s practices paying additional for service, employing suggested
relatives which it is nepotism. Paying taxes and participating in tribal ceremonies which we can
understand that He is tribal rituals. On the other hand, he chooses to live in a d middle-class
Ugandan neighborhood while staying away from HG`s expatriate society.

What is the problem in Charles Martin?

1.Aspect of reaching outcome
2.Unethical practices which He hire people with large tips or nepotism
3. Tribal ceremonies because managers and CEO never influence for religion their worker
4. Distancing from HG who lives near in middle-class Uganda
5.Illegal corruption

What is the problem here?

1. Charles Martin was more interested about his impact with esteem to the Ugandan
nation

2

2. Polycentric Management
3. Green was more related with corporate-level issues
4. Two types of management Geocentrist and Ethnocentrist

How influence of Martin1s polycentric behavior

1.If there is not Martin`s influence, HG business operations would move slowly
2. Every work would not be calculated in time within the entire budget
3.Actually, Martin`s rituals helped HG be attached to with countrymen and become an
acknowledged company within the society.

Recommendation. What they need to do

1.Martin is the correct worker or manager for the work. However, he should stretch out tribal
payments to forestall the national from taking benefit of HG.
2. HG should hire somebody who associated HG`s corporate culture with the culture of Uganda.

3. Habitual way of doing trade in home land might not be the best oncoming
in landlord country.
4. Firms abroad must define what business practices in landlord countries
vary from those at home and administration modify where essential.

Three alternatives
1.I guess international business must estimate sure business practices to provide they
consider national norms in their behavior. From my point of view, they must look for the these
items.
A) Language Barrier- We know that English is international language, however, business people
need to give attention language of indigenous people.
B) Local Business Practices- Nepotism
C)Religion- Uganda is multinational religion country.

2.Culture contains norms which they based on knowledgeable attitudes, significances and
faiths. Nearly everyone accepts that there are cross-country distinctions, but they as to what
they are.

3.Cost and Advantages are the other alternatives.

Recommendation and solution

A) Administrative persons who are working in a foreign country should be geocentric.
B) Managers and other workers need to respect other country`s culture
C) It does not matter where every work place should have special and clear guidelines
for workers of the respective firm in terms of international operation.
D) If businesspeople doing some business in foreign country they need to know clear
comprehension about the landlord people before going for the project.
E) HG`s project may need to be postponed
F) Company need to hire people who professional personnel for the project and It does
not matter local or foreign.
G) Foreign companies should be responsive to cultural gaps in order foretell and check
its relations and operations and it should first define what business practices in an
international country diverge from those it`s used to.

Why managers need to become geocentric? There are two managers who Green and
Martin have totally different business practices. Green is ethnocentric because his
company manage by Christian philosophy. Green concerned Martin`s life and his
lifestyles. Martin is Polycentric because he was an American but was fascinated by Africa
and Africa`s culture. The second he graduated from African studies. In fact, these
business practices create problem, for this reason, managers need to become
geocentric.
Recommendation. What they need to do
1.Martin is the correct worker or manager for the work. However, he should stretch out tribal
payments to forestall the national from taking benefit of HG.
