How does the
Microformer work?
The Microformer is constructed using
recycled microwave oven parts, as well as
other industrial waste.
The main component of the Microformer is
the Microwave Oven Transformer (MOT),
which is designed to provide 1000W of
power, just as much as a small household
would typically use.
The MOT converts 2.4kV to standard 120V,
60Hz electricity, making it an excellent
candidate for small scale power
transmission.
Internally, the Microformer doesnt differ
significantly from utility transformers. It
comprises the MOT, wiring to the external
terminals, and mineral oil bath.
On the current prototype, the enclosure of
the Microformer is a paint can, which
protects the components from wear and
tear, as well as serves as the ground
return for the electrical circuit.
This lightweight transformer along with
the single-wire-earth-return (SWER)
electrical topology makes the Microformer
a cost-effective choice for rural
distribution systems.
The Microformer grid can be assembled
using inexpensive steel wire and wood
poles, which reduces the implementation
costs and facilitates local maintenance.
