Abstract: Across this work of investigation one will try to establish first the roots of the
Inquisition or Court of the Holy Trade in Chile, his way of acting and carrying out the
judgments, his importance in the colonial society and his usefulness as tool of judicial
character inside the functions of the church in Latin America. The importance of the
Inquisition in America relapses principally, in the fact of being the colonial society
characterized by the religious thought, being this fundamental element of the political ideas
and of the erudition of the epoch, turning into many cases into an alienating tool of the
population "believer" into the entire social stratum. For therefore, the above mentioned
institution was controlling the development of the mentality of the epoch and the currents
of thought, putting him, from canons religious and rules that were determining the practice
of the faith, limits marked to the born ideas from I have dinner of the society.
