2. View and analyze WWI propaganda. Compare recruitment posters for Britain and Germany. Answer the
following questions:
What do the posters have in common?

- Emphasized the need of a call to action

- Played on peoples natural paranoia of losing friends, family and loved ones

- The urging of wartime economy

- Encouragement of continued support for government policy
- Created dazzling eye filling compelling spectacles of (us vs. them dynamic) concept, and created the
indignant conception against the alleged adversary/opposed country
- Catchphrases Red Cross vs. Iron Cross, Whos absent is it you?
- The deliberate orchestration of fear (far better to face bullets than to be killed at home by a bomb)

- The martyrdom belief in the cause for the country nationalism themes of commitment and service
- Manufacture the notion of the devious enemies out to vanquish xyz.
- Working on the hearts and minds of others Your countrys call

What poster did you find most convincing? What did it say/show? Why was this effective?

- The Lions poster. Appealed to me because of my fascination with lions and their synonymous with bold
bravery, competent courage, ultimate power, and loyalty to the pride as well. LIONS ARE THE KINGS. ROAR.
Every warrior/soldier should be that OF A LION.
- THE EMPIRE NEEDS MEN - THE EMPIRE NEEDS LIONS

3. Read about Trench Warfare on the Western Front. Read the information at the links and answer the questions.
How did trench warfare begin on the Western Front?

- General Eric von Falkenhayn decided to hold on to the parts of French and Belgium that Germany acquired
and needed to maintain, on the contrary to retreating to the river Aisne.

- So he ordered his men to dig trenches that would provide them with protection from the advancing French
and British troops.

- The Allies soon realized that they could not break through this line and they also began to dig trenches.

- After a few months these trenches had spread from the North Sea to the Swiss Frontier.

- For the next three years neither side advanced more than a few miles along this line

- The line became known as the Western Front.

Draw a diagram of the trench system.

4. Watch clips on weapons and technology (M) Watch the videos at the links and answer the questions.
Explain how barbed wire was used in WWI.

- Influenced by the control of cattle/livestock

- Barbed wire was used in WWI as an internalized tool in the battlefield
- Brutally Channeled into a trap corridor of death
- Mass production = Mass implementation / Massive action of use.
- Designed to stop the advancement of the opposing side
- Practically impenetrable without fatal/injurious consequences
- Slowed and restricted forwarding progress of potential attack
- Set along the perimeter as a defense wall - protection
Explain how tanks evolved over the course of the war.

- Invented by the British in WWI

- June 30th, 1915 Winston Churchill and David Lowe George to cut through barbed wire
- The Mark IV 2259 A.K.A GLADYS - STEEL Military Weapon Dominating Workhouse & Game Changer
for tanks
- Battle of Cambrai November 1917- COMBAT TANKS = 378
- Became an integral factor/ critical component of Ally strategy
- Renault F17 French
- Whippet 14 TONS - 8.3 mph 3 crew
- UTILIZED BY GERMANS LATER ON LATE BLOOMING
- MARK V 28 TO 29 TONS 4.6 MPH 8 CREW- TITANIC TENET FOR BRITISH VICTORY SPEARHEAD
INFANTRY
- BATTLE OF AMIENS AUGUST 8TH 1918 430 combat tanks

Critical Thinking: How did the Industrial Revolution contribute to the new weapons of WWI?

o Mass production lead to mass products and agents of chaos/destruction upon the enemy (a pre cis
for cause and effect correlations)
o Increased the destructive capacity of armies by providing them with weapons of enhanced range,
accuracy, and fire
o Developments in metallurgy, chemicals and electricity led to new forms of explosives and
propellants for improved firearms and artillery
o Brought incredible ways to kill the use of lethality capacity and the degree of technological
advancements; brought unseen and unheard of results to the ever shifting battlefield
o Synopsis Subsequently and consequentially accrued to the visceral demonstration of the
prodigious strength, resilience and killing power of modern states.
