The article that I chose to read is called The Secret of Self-Regulated Learning. The
ultimately control of ones learning in order to maximize it. This can affect student achievement
in a positive way and can be evaluated and accomplished by the student asking important
questions such as How motivated am I? or What is the best way to go about this task?. This
can help organize the thinking process and move new information into long term memory.
Although parents interested in the learning process could read this, the article is targeted towards
professionals because the next part of the article touches on how to promote self-regulated
learning in the classroom and the reader is addressed as a teacher at some points. Some ways to
promote self-regulated learning are to give assignments that require students to ask themselves
the questions previously mentioned and to self-evaluate after receiving their grade.
Although I think that the article has many great specific examples of things to assign
students, the way that the article describes the grading process for these types of assignments
makes them seem insignificant or like an inconvenience to the teacher. I think that if these types
of assignments are all pass/fail, then it would be harder for the student to reflect on how to
improve for the next time by asking the self-evaluation questions provided by the article. One
way that this could impact my teaching is to help students learn consequences and
accomplishments for their actions through different activities and assignments I can give them.
When teaching art, it is important for students to do a self-graded evaluation because the most
important part of grading a students piece is how the artist feels and thinks about their own
