INTRODUO
Embora o projeto do abrigo ainda no tenha sido completamente desenvolvido, o presente trabalho apresenta
Moretti, Frei Otto e Anthony Gaudi.
INTRODUCTION
The Centro Universitrio Belas Artes de So Paulo inaugurated, in February 2015, its first Rapid Prototyping and
Digital Manufacturing Laboratory and within an adequacy of curricular base internal schedule to the new realities of
contemporary production in the fields of Architecture and Industrial Design, this research was initiated and has the
general objective to build a responsive shelter to be built in an area owned by the institution, employing process design
and digital manufacturing.
Although the project hasnt yet been fully developed, this paper presents advances in digital manufacturing with
experience in the construction of catenary arches using MDF boards resistant to water as a basis for the final construc-
tion of the said shelter. To use flat sheets in manufacturing of objects that have curved shapes, the group encountered
a number of problems in the modeling of the arcs (which was based on a Grasshopper generated algorithm), since
there were many surfaces with double curvature, a fact that would increase many extra hours of machining to the
manufacturing process due to specific issues of the Gcode generator type of software provided by the institution
(VCarve). In this article, the group presents its solutions for manufacturing catenary arches digitally linking structural
rigidity, docking systems that obviate the use of nails, screws or glue and the use of parametric modeling.
Our source of inspiration was, undoubtedly, the form finding experiments carried out by architects such as Lui-
gi Moretti, Frei Otto and Anthony Gaudi. Not that these references have appeared originally on our goals. What we
thought was just working with digital manufacturing and creating forms using the principles of visual programming and
associative geometry. In few words, we wanted to use the Grasshopper and debut in the field of parametric architec-
ture and design.
We had more than enough equipment available to produce the shelter, but lacked all the experience with this
type of language and working methods, as soon presented here what we could produce in a very short period of time,
exactly between February 19, 2015 up to 04 May of the same year. Or more precisely, 73 days. This was the time to fit
ourselves in with the tools and generate a research that led our work.
We didnt have to go very far, after all, thanks to the collective sense that prevails in the worldide Grasshopper
community, we were fortunate to count on the generosity of countless people and easily realized what were the vari-
ous references and which paths should be trodden in order to achieve our goals, which unfortunately is not yet in this
present issue... We notice interest from many colleagues to study catenaries and we believe that this gave the con-
ceptual start that the group needed. These studies, besides pointing out geometries and various structural issues, also
served as the basis to anchor our knowledge in the field of digital form-finding which has been the research theme of
many colleagues, according to what we can see in CUMINCAD publications, and amply explored in the video tutorials
we access to compose our material.
The task was very interesting, because besides the group access to equipment needed for the job, great worksta-
tions, router, laser cutting machine and 3D printers, we had a generous amount of MDF, given the partnership that the
University centre made with Masisa. The account closed as follows: we wanted to build a shelter, our material was the
experincias do engenheiro uruguaio Eladio Dieste.
Estas informaes orientaram o grupo a utilizar o plug-in do Grasshopper
Anterior compreenso clara destes conceitos, o grupo
estava utilizando o componente Catenary, nativo do Grasshopper. A utilizao deste plug-in potencializou a criao
Super MDF Masisa, weather resistant and we could generate complex shapes, able to adapt our perfectly object to
the immediate surroundings and following heat stroke parameters, ventilation, analyzing an amount variables hitherto
only known from readings and empirical exercises that we were doing prior to this activity. The material in question is
extremely interesting for the distribution of compressive stresses as far as we eliminate torsional, bending and traction.
Thus, we had parameters relating to the site, and the material we had available.
Of course, we find in geometries, such as the catenary, an interesting answer to our initial question: how to deliver
stability to our structure. This was the variable that the group was able to work over these 116 days.
Initially, the group needed to conduct a research about the application of geometric and mathematical concepts
for the catenary arch. Initial reports as commonplace presence of this kind of geometry and the fact that it is much
the same as the parabolic arch were very interesting and well illustrated the concept about it as well as analyze their
applications both in architecture and in design. One of the architects who most exploited this from was Antony Gaudi,
including at the famous building of the Holy Family Church; we should also highlight the experiences of the Uruguayan
engineer Eladio Dieste. In design, the projects and products are scarce, but still are present and show their efficiency
and elegance.
Understanding the distribution of the efforts in an arc of this naturewas very important, since it is generated by
gravity acting on a cable suspended only by two distinct and distant points (whether aligned or not). A catenary arch
is described from the equal distribution of weight throughout its length. When the catenary obtained is reversed, its
structure shows many structural and formal properties, such as the fact of self sustaining and distributing compressive
stresses, minimizing crunches that are unwanted for the adopted type of material (in this case the MDF plates) . This
information guided the group to use the Grasshopper plug-in known to simulate particle motion, the Kangaroo. Prior
to clear understanding of these concepts, the group was using the Catenary component, native on Grasshopper. The
use of this plug-in enhanced the creation of these arcs using non-aligned points and testing various visual possibilities.
Besides the generation of the arc itself, Kangaroo solved the problem of generating double-curved geometries
since it allowed the job to be developed with the use of meshes instead of surfaces. The conduct of the experiences
presented the need for a subdivision system that would allow the accommodation of parts of the arches on the MDF
sheets, which are supplied in dimensions of 2500 mm by 1250 mm and the thickness hitherto adopted was 15 mm.
For this task, it was essential to use other Grasshopper plug-in, in this case weaverbird, that establishes subdivisions in
meshes in a practical and effective way, saving a lot of programming time in the process as a whole.
During the conceptual phase of the work, another important element to be highlighted was the use of 3D printing,
using ABS filament to generate small-scale models and the use of a laser cutting machine. This procedure enabled the
group greater interaction with the studied models, testing the docking systems and solving issues related to the stud-
ied visual elements, so that besides stiff they could have attractive design.
The model adopted was made by triangulation, in the form of trusses, with variable bandwidth, applicable to
different possibilities in design and architecture. After some decisions and based on the reduced scale models, it was
iniciated the manufacture process, using a CNC router system for testing the joint in a real scale, but using ordinary
MDF to avoid waste of material, since the waterproof MDF sheets are very expensive.
quadas, o grupo passou a testar diversas outras solues.
As trelias,
Inicialmente, a ideia
so virtuais.
Observing the response of the material to the efforts undergone by the structure, it was generated numerous
changes in the shapes of joints and codes generation methods of the machining. After initial models with joint systems
that failure after machining full-scale, for not keeping adequate structural rigidity characteristics, the group went on to
test other solutions. Among those more successful, we highlight here the development of an external rib structure as
an exoskeleton, which is the basis for sustaining the trusses. This structure allowed a more homogeneous distribution
of loads throughout the material. The trusses, on the other hand, were machined from a single piece, a fact that reduc-
es the internal bending moments as well as their twists.
As the work is still in progress and in line with expectations of the group this year, studies in plug-ins for Grass-
hopper to do finite element analysis will be needed for the perfect design of the pieces. Currently, the research has
conducted studies and tests with Karamba and Millipede, but still not so significant results to be disclosed.
As a partial conclusion, the group may mention that even with little time and life experience of the Digital Manu-
facturing Laboratory in our institution, changes in the conduct of the creative process were substantial due to the use
of digital manufacturing processes. The equipment was available to the group just outside the graduation class times
but allowed the tests to be done almost simultaneously with the development solutions and thus errors and defects
found in models assembled as tests could be better analyzed. Therefore, the digital manufacturing delivered quality
and speed to the process in general and this fact is unquestionable. However, the quality of the software that generates
the Gcodes for CNC systems is crucial to improve the process as a whole. The use of VCarve software has helped in
machining processes, but the group understands that there are other solutions available in the market and tests with
other options must be made.
With the digital work process, the group may draw some relevant initial conclusions. Initially, the idea that man-
ufacturing and design are distinct worlds in analogic workflows, indeed falls apart. For an information system, materi-
ality is a fact and as such is an element of the virtual world. Information systems are virtual. Now the manufacturing,
whether any element, for completely manual methods or using mechanical machine is connected to the materiality,
the real world. Computer-controlled machines can associate these different worlds and the consequences for those
involved in the manufacture of objects (even a catenary arch) are many. From the factory floor employee who lost her
job due to the characteristics of digital production systems, the architect or designer who had to adapt to new ways
to design that not only the hand, all suffered or were benefited from innovations technology. Taking into account the
digital work process done in a Digital Fabrication Laboratory, as to what this group has access, it can be said that most
of what is prepared in a virtual environment can migrate to the real world.
With the possibility of working data digitally (computing), the amount of variables that architecture and design
professionals may include in their work process are much higher. The gap between the designer and the engineer may
cease to exist. The professional connected to the field of architecture and design, adopting design and manufacturing
processes in the digital age, can work elements that were more connected to other areas of knowledge in other peri-
ods of history. A multitude of fields of knowledge should be considered as a variable in a database that can generate
the shape of objects we use in our daily lives.

MOTRIZ DOS TEMPOS ATUAIS been adapted to the incessant news that annually the industry
offers. Since the 1780s, landmark of the industrial revolution
according to Eric Hobsbawm, architects and designers had the
task of creating more efficient objects under the most diverse
aspects, and supporting her in emerging technologies of each
period, could not only produce them but also solved the problem
of the large scales needed to placate the demand for various
objects. Over the 234 years of history of modern industry, we
can highlight several times when groups of artists, architects
and designers, propagating new ways to design and build: often
shocking public opinion, at first, but after assimilated by most
fearful voices, became institutionalized ideas and common
practice and recognized by several groups, including opposites.
And according to what we detect from literature reviews, we
observe phenomena dating from the turn of XX to XXI, and that
we will point throughout this short essay.
Especially talking about the turn of the century XXI, we must
emphasize innovations in the field of communication sciences
and information that influenced the way we organize our data,
and maybe we can point the rupture of a large bastion hitherto
known: the disintegration of double consisting for information
and support. In the book Being Digital published in 1995 and
authored by Nicholas Negroponte, there is the idea of the atom
replacement for the bit. In this concept, we see the disintegration
of information relative to the support. Before our computers
network, the information was inserted in a support, consisting
of an inseparable physical element. In the digital age, the
information is separated from the support, so I can access the
same information but with different supports, as my notebook,
desktop, mobile phone or tablet. The atom is no longer the
guardian of information, and thus, if I store my work on the hard
drive of my lap top, perhaps this equipment has a monetary
value not only by the electronic components associated with it,
but also by the work that was developed in Last month, if not use
the cloud to store. The information is not tangible.
The overall concept pointed out in the above ideas can not
be taken as something new. Buckiminster Fuller has longed for a
global view of information that linked the technical realization of
a cyberspace with the simultaneous dematerialisation of global
media, having a direct impact on our physical surroundings and
their relationship to our worlds. Also according to Frazer, the
electronic information network is heterogeneous, regardless of
their location, is informal, active and in a shallow analysis, we
can see that is the exact opposite of what we find in traditional
architecture, and this leads us to imagine Death of cities as we
know them, and understand that the symbolic function of the
new architecture is to make visible our buildings: not only as
a monument to formal expressions of their function, but as an
essential part of its function. The architecture as an essential
organ of interaction with its surroundings, alternating both the
reception and transmission of information.
But not only with axonometric and design, the architects and
designers of the twentieth century has lived. The idea of trying to
no mundo todo, talvez j fossem pressgios do fracasso do
arquitetos e designers do sculo XX.
Heinz Isler, Anthony Gaudi e Luigi Moretti.
sobretudo sistemas estruturais inovadores e otimizados atravs
e sustentabilidade.
