FOREWORD. THEORY

I, Nicholas Flamel, Clerk of Paris, in this year of 1414, of the reign of our blessed prince Charles
VI, may God bless, and after the death of my faithful companion Perrenelle, remembering of her,
I am taken by fantasy and joy to write in your favour dear nephew, the whole mastery of the
secret of the Projection Powder or Philosophical Tincture, that concede God to give for his
insignificant serf, that I did as you will do if you proceed as I will tell you. Follow, therefore,
with art and understanding the speeches of the Philosophers concerning the secret, but you don't
take their writings to the letter, because although they can be understood according to the Nature,
they would not be useful to you. Therefore, don't forget to pray God that give you understanding
of reason, of truth and of nature, so that you see in this book, in which is written the secret word
by word and page the page, and as I did and worked with your dear aunt Perrenelle, that I
remember so intensely. Thus, I placed the mastery in this book, so that you don't forget of the
great good that God grants you and that He favours you. This is so that you don't forget, in its
memory, to sing and to psalmodies in your praises and nothing can be more adequate to celebrate
such good event than exalted songs. Thus, I wrote this book by my own hand, and that it had
destined to the Saint-Jacques church, being of the said parish, after finding Abraham the Jew 's
book, I didn't want to sell this for money and I kept it with much care to write in it the said secret
of the alchemy in letters and characters of my imagination, for which I give you the key. Take
care, therefore, of maintaining it secret and don't ever forget to keep in silence and remember me,
when I am in the "sudarium", remembering that I prepared such document, so that you become
yourself a great master in philosophic alchemy, because this is my pleasure, desire, comfort and
fantasy to grant you such secret.

Thus, do like I did and make known that I am of advanced and decrepit age and everything in
honour of God and Church helping the poor needy widows and orphans like I have to this hour
founded rents and hospitals and decorate d twenty-two houses of God in loyalty and devotion.
Thus listen to your document and place it deep in your heart and do not diverge from the path of
the truth. Thus, keep secret this mastery, prey and invoke the Holy Spirit enlightening our
intentions and our spirit in such a way to work Alchemy in the path of Nature.

THEORY OF FLAMEL

I am going, therefore, to begin your document by clear and full sermon so that it doesn't confuse
your understanding, before telling some things on the practice of work. I wanted to bring you,
through the theory, to know what is the alchemy, that is to say, the science of converting metallic
bodies in gold and perfect silver, vesting health to the human bodies and transforming rocks and
stones quickly in true and precious (gems). This knowledge, has no other similar one that exist,
and by it is constituted an art without parallel, that is to say, Philosophic, by which is made a
universal medicinal body converting Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Moon and Mercury in pure, clear,
brilliant, limpid Sun and of the colour of this mineral, but still better than any metallic gold and
that include in itself the virtue and the power to heal all illness, advance the development of any
vegetables before its term and of transforming all stones in diamonds and rubies. Such art and
mastery is made by the way of Nature, by the appropriate regime of fire and by the industry of
the operator. Proceeding in everything with the natural reason of understanding, little by little
you will finish the work if you never get tired of cooking with patience, without anxiety.

Thus so that the philosophical work may begin, which is on the course of Nature, as an
understanding man, you should seek two main intentions: the first is the right understanding of
the things that I will tell you. Because me, well before to work and to begin the suitable way, as
an understanding man, had already the understanding in the nature of mercury, sun and the
saturnia, as I said in my book where is engraved the illustrations that you will see in the cemetery
arches. Even so, I was retained for more than twenty-three and a half years in trying to conjugate
the moon, that is the quicksilver, with the sun and to expurgate the dregs of the sun and the
seminal moon, a deadly poison because I didnt know the agent or the medium to use in
fortifying the Mercury, because, without this medium, it is as vulgar water, it cannot dissolve the
moon, the sun or, as you fortify water, this mercury is fortified in the same manner so that later,
by force of manipulating and work, finally I discovered in the fourth and fifth leaves of my book
of Abraham.
For this reason, the second intention is to know how you should fortify this mercury through the
metallic agent, without which is not possible, in another way, to reach the inner of the sun and of
the moon, the ones which, being hard, they cannot be open without the sulphurous spirit of the
gold and of the moon. Thus, it is necessary to proceed by having them be together with the
metallic agent, that is to say, the royal saturnia and then after, fortify the mercury by the
philosophical art so that, then, this dissolves in liqueur the sun or the moon, remove the
significant dregs of its putrefaction. Know that no other form exist nor mastery of working in this
art besides the one that I give to you, word for word, whose work is not easy to accomplish and
thorny in discovering, if it be not taught as I tell you, because the Sun and Moon are very hard
bodies that cannot be totally opened except by the mercurial spirits fortified by ways and
philosophical procedures. Everything else is false and induces to failure and deception as I
worked in great displeasure, for a long time, and without that procedure, the mercury stays cold,
hydropic and earthy and is without plenty of force in that case to penetrate deep in the viscera of
the two perfect bodies Sun and Moon. If the mercury is not previously warmed up with the
metallic sulphurous fire, its soft water out of its body and has not rejected its faecal and black
earth, it is still vulgar mercury. In that state, penetrating in their wombs and they in hes, they
take in astral life, growth and vegetation, they become alive, just as they were in the rocks of the
mines. By this way is made the conjugation of the philosophical sun, moon and of the mercury,
but not the vulgar ones and not in any other way. But how can the mercury be fortified like this?
Ponders, in first place, that no other water, besides the mercury, extracts the Sulphur of the
metal's womb, in a way, that without it, in the beginning, in the middle and in the end, none can
open nor do anything that is good, because it is the attractive virtue, made active, that makes
everything and becomes engross with the sulphur, just as the sulphur lives of it.

What you see of the mines, water of dry sulphurous vapour and mercurial wet vapour is made all
metals, because, one and other love each other and attract a convenient nature to itself, that is to
say, the nature pursues its nature, and never in another way do proceed the instrument of the
Nature, even in the art, because one loves its companion as the female attracts the male to
herself, rejoicing from time to time, as what you see in very clear and graceful engraving in the
image of the Fourth illustration, where I displayed the young mercury with the caduceus and the
horrible serpents around the gold stick that he holds in his hand: because, without this, I never
would known the hermetic mercury, which we compose by the art and philosophical industry of
the metallic sulphur and mercury, in the first preparation.

Take care in understanding my words, written with honesty and of good-faith in your intention,
dear and loved nephew, so that you don't fail and beg to God for the salvation of my soul and use
it in the way of fairness of our good God, to who I beg that, from now on, grant you health of the
body, understanding, intention, judicious will, rectitude and heart loyalty. Believes firmly that
the whole art of the industry resides in the philosophical mercury preparation, since in it is
everything that we intended and what intended the old sages and that us, just as them, have
nothing less to do than to prepare it with the sun and the moon, because, without it, nothing
exists in the whole mundane sphere that can produce the said philosophical and medicinal
tincture. The natural art is in learning how to extract of it the live and spiritual seed contained in
its viscera and bowels which seed is the matter so praised by the sages in their writings and
books, which affirm, without artifice or fallacy, that the matter of the mutative tincture of the
metals in gold is one and only and dissolves truly everything without falsification or deception,
although they say nothing of its preparation. This one lies in these three only, nowhere else,
because in other metallic bodies it is not as good, it is vitiated and spoiled, while, here, it is pure,
authentic and true.

Observe then, that one thing doesn't give anything if it doesnt possess it, and by consequence,
seek only the sun and the moon, as well as the mercury elaborated by the philosophical art,
daintily prepared, that doesn't wet the hands, which metal is in itself a sulphurous metallic soul,
that is, the igneous light and, so that you don't stray of the right way, seek the metals, and there is
the said sulphur enclosed daintily indeed, almost similar to the sun. You will find it in to caves
and depths of the ones that are made of iron, of gold and of brass (is it brass or copper), that is to
say, the sun almost purest from one to the other, and if you are aware, such sulphur has the
power to dye the humid and cold moon, that is fine silver, in pure yellow and good gold, but it is
necessary that it be done by the spiritual medicine, that is to say, the key that discovers and opens
all metals that I will tell you. Now, think about which mineral is a thief that eats everything
except the gold and the moon, that turns good this thief, because when it has them in its womb,
them it is good and capable to prepare the quicksilver as I will teach you in its time.

PRACTICE

Thus, do not deviate from the right path and refer to my other explanations. Soon after, work in
the practice that I will surrender to you on behalf of the Father, of Son and of the Holly Spirit,
Adorable Trinity. Amen.

You will seek, first, to take the first-born child of Saturn that is not the vulgar, 9 parts, of the
steel sabre of the warring God, 4 parts. Makes these to rubify in a crucible. When it is red and
melted, pour inside the 9 parts of Saturn, as I told you. This will eat the other quickly: clean very
well the faecal dregs that arise to the top of Saturnia with nitre and tartar, for four or five times. It
will be good when you see an astral sign like a star over the regulus.

Thus, of gold is made the key and the chopper that opens and cuts all metals, but above all, the
sun, the moon and mercury, all of which he eats, devour and keeps in its womb. You will have
this way the right engineering and understanding if you worked as is right, because this saturnine
is the triumphant real herb because it is the moon, and the little imperfect king that we promote
to the degree of great glory and honour and is also the queen, that is to say, the moon and the
wife of the sun.

Thus, it is male and female and our hermaphrodite, that is the mercury and is the real work in
image of the seventh leaf and first gift of Jewish Abraham, which is two serpents around a stick
of gold, as you will see in this book that I made myself in my fantasy, in the best way that I could
represent, for discernment and as philosophical document. Take care, then, in getting a good
supply and provision, because it is necessary that you obtain a large amount, 12 or 13 pounds or
more, if you want to work in many operations.

You will marry, then, the young mercury, that is to say, the quicksilver with the philosophical
mercury saturnial, so that, through it, you can encourage and fortify the said common quicksilver
by 7, and even 10 to 11 times with the above-mentioned agent, called key or sabre of sharp steel,
so that it cuts efficiently and penetrate in the body of the metals. When you have accomplish this
mastery, you will possess the double or triple water, painted in the Rosebush image, of the book
of Abraham the Jew, which trickles from the base of an oak tree, that is to say, of our Saturnia,
that is the key, and precipitate itself in the abyss, as affirms the said Jew, meaning in the receiver
that is attached to the retort throat, where will fall the referred double mercury, by art of a
proportionate suitable fire.

But here it meets a grievous thorn, impossible even to work if God doesn't reveal the referred
secret or a master doesn't transmit it, because the mercury does not conjugated with royal
Saturnia without a thing that is occult in the right art and to be examined as to how it is made and
how it works, because if you don't know how is made the valour and peace with the mentioned
quicksilver, you will find nothing that is worth. Thus, dear and beloved nephew, as I don't intend
to hide anything, so I to tell you everything without keeping anything and to show you as you
should discover correctly, step by step, what is necessary in this philosophical mastery, therefore,
I will tell you that, without sun or the moon, the said work won't be profitable to you. You will
make the old man or voracious wolf, eat gold or silver, in weight and measure, as I will tell you.
Pay attention to my explanations so that you don't make mistake and fail as it happened me in
this task. How is it then that you give to eat the gold to our old dragon? Reflect on this with good
sense, because if you give little gold to the melted Satrnia, it will open very well, but the
quicksilver won't take life; here an incongruous thing that it won't be useful, in that I worked
much, full of sadness, before finding the correct way of doing. So, if you give it to eat a lot of
gold, it won't be so open and disposed, but it will absorb the quicksilver soon and both will be
conjugated in paste. Does as you saw me do. Notice that it is necessary to handle everything
according to the weights that I tell you because without that you won't work in your profit, but in
your detriment, remember it. There is the found procedure. Seal the secret, because it is
everything and never write it on paper, nor any other thing that one can see written, because we
would be the cause for the damage of the profane universe. So I transmit it under the rigid secret
of the secret of the conscience, for the love that I have for you.

Take X parts of fine clean and purged gold 9, 10 to 11 times only by the voracious wolf and then
after 11 parts (20 in Alchimie de Flamel, Savary editions, pg.25) of the Saturnia, and melt it in a
crucible. When they are melted, pour in the X of fine gold, melt both and stir with a burning
coal. Your gold will react a little. Pour it on a marble, powdered, with 12 of quicksilver. Make
them as butter or cheese by mixing and tossing one and another, here and there, from time to
time, washing with clean tap water, until that the water comes out clear and the mass seems clear
and white (you will do like this with the melted moon). Then is made the conjunction with solar
Saturnia. As soon as it is like butter, you will take the mass that you will dry slowly with a thin
cloth, with much art. Here is our lead and our mass of gold and moon, not the common, but
philosophical. Now place them, in a good refractory mud retort, preferable of steel, after in an
oven, and give it fire, heating up little by little. Adapt a suitable receiver to the retort for two
hours and vivify the fire so much that the mercury passes to the receiver. This is the mercury or
water of the blooming rosebush, the blood of the innocent ones in the book of Abraham the Jew,
being the water of the philosophical gold and of the moon. You can believe that this mercury ate
a little of the King's body and it can dissolve with much more power the other, after it be more
covered with the Saturnia body.
You will have, like this, gone up a step or echelon in the stairway of the art. Take the faeces out
of the retort, melt them in a crucible to strong fire, extracting the whole saturnine smog, and
when the gold melted is clean, infuse inside, as the first time, two of Saturnia. Then is the sun IX
infused in the said faeces much more open than the first time, and as the mercury is now more
acid than before, it will have acquired much more strength and vigour to scrutinise and, so to
speak, to devour it and to fill its womb little by little. Pay attention, dear nephew, to the degrees
of the art of Nature and of the Reason, so that you arise by the echelons at the highest level of the
Philosophy, that is on all the course of Nature and that would have never found if I didn't
transmit to you this mastery. Therefore, bless the Lord for he granted me to give you, because
without this, nothing would serve you to work, as some do with damage of savings, infinite
sorrow and works, anxious vigils and depressing concerns. Do then, as from the first times,
marry the extracted mercury already mentioned, robust in graduation, grinding and mixing, so
that it extracts the whole blackness, and dry as I told you. Put everything in the retort as above
and do no more or less as you have done, during two hours to gentle and appropriate fire, after
strong and good to force the mercury out and to the receiver. You will have the mercury much
more acute and you will have reached at this moment the second step of the philosophical
echelon.

Continue to work as you have been, throwing the saturnine Son in convenient weight, little by
little, handling with discernment, no more or less, as you did in the beginning, until you reach the
tenth step of the stairway. Rest then. You already possess the said igneous and acute mercury,
fully engrossed of male sulphur and of the vigour of the astral salt that proceed of the deepest
caves and viscera of the gold and of our saturnine dragon. Believe that I write you things that no
Philosopher never said or wrote before. It is the wonderful caduceus of which all Sages talk
about in their books, affirming that he alone has the power of accomplishing the whole
philosophical work. Their statements are true, as I discovered alone when working with this
mercury, just as you can get, if it is your fantasy, because this one and no other, constitutes the
close nature and the root of the all metals. It is about possessing this mercury, and no other
liqueur, as think some ignorant and fools that dont reflect that these metals are made of the
liqueur that the referred mercury reduces, dissolving in liqueur the sun and the moon, in order to
prepare naturally and simply the philosophical tincture or the projection powder, capable of
transmute all metals in sun and moon, that some think having mastered when they possess this
proper celestial mercury, but fail greatly in this, facing displeasures before picking the rose, for
lack of understanding.

It is true that if they knew correctly the proportions and the fire regime, they would not have a lot
of effort and they could not go wrong, although they wanted it, but in this art it is like this the
way of working. Listen and try to do as I teach you. On behalf of God you will take, then, of
your animated mercury 2 or 4 parts as you want, put in alone into a closed matrass or with two of
solar Satrnia, being one of gold and two of Satrnia, everything amalgamated as butter,
carefully and with dexterity, wash, clean and dry. Close the top with good wax, that is to say, the
lute (SEAL) of wisdom. Place this confection, as does the sitting hen over its eggs. Leave the
mercury like this prepared to follow its course for some days, that is, during 40 or 50 days until
you see formed white or red sulphur of philosophical sublimate in the vase, which comes from
the rays of the said mercury. We pick this with a feather, because they are the living gold and
silver born out of the mercury itself.
 TURN OF WHEEL

Take now the white or red sulphur, grinding it in a glass or marble mortar, wetting it with the
third part of its weight of the mercury, from where it was extracted by sublimation, said sulphur
having arise from the putrefaction of the mercury. Make a paste of both like butter, pour this
mixture in a closed matrass on the oven, with appropriate and gentle fire of ashes, as the
philosophical understanding, cook until the mercury has transformed in sulphur. During this
coction, you will observe a surprising things in your vase, all of the colours of the world, which
you cannot admire without elevating your heart to God, in action of thanks to such high gift.

When you arrive to the red purple, harvest it, because the alchemic powder is elaborated now and
capable of transmuting any metal in fine, pure and limpid gold, that you can multiply by wetting,
as you did, grinding with new mercury, cooking in the same vase, same oven and same fire. It
will be a much shorter operation, however, its force will have ten times more power. Here it is
the complete mastery to the mercury, that some don't believe to be true because they are deaf and
imbecile and unable to produce such work.

If you want to work by other way, take fine gold, three parts in fine powdered or in very well
laminate sheets, prepare a paste with 7 parts of your philosophical mercury, which is our moon.
Place it in an oval matrass to the oven, very well closed, and apply very strong fire, as to keep
the lead in a liquid state without to sit or to coagulate, because then it is the right way of
regulating the fire regime, and your mercury, that is your philosophical wind, it ascend and goes
down on the body of the gold, that devours little by little and that transports in its womb.

Cooks so much that the gold and the mercury don't ascend and go down anymore and stay both
copulated and have consummated the peace and the agreement among the two dragons, that are
fire and water united. Now, you will have in your vase a black face, as dissolved pitch, which is
the mark of death and putrefaction of the gold and the key of the whole mastery. Resuscitate and
regenerate these two by cooking for 40 days, and don't be annoyed; soon their will appear several
mutations, such as the colour black, grey, green, white, orange colour and, finally, a red like
blood or of crimson poppy. Worry only about this last one, because it is the true sulphur, finished
and you possess the alchemic powder. I won't tell you the just term, because it is a function of
the work of the labourer, however, you cannot fail if you do what I teach you.

MULTIPLICATION

If you desire to multiply the stone or powder, take one part of it and soak it with two parts of
your animated mercury, cook as you did in the matrass after you have done a soft paste with
them, in the same oven and in the same fire. In less time the second term of the philosophical
wheel will be accomplished and the powder acquires ten times more power than in its first birth.
Make it turn again or as much as you want, and you will have concluded the treasure without
price, the best that exist in the whole world, besides which you cannot aspire more. You possess
health and wealth if you use it as you owe. You have the treasure that grants all the mundane
happiness and that me, poor rural native of Pontoise, did and accomplished by three times in my
house of the street of Escrivains, very close to the chapel of St-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie and that
me, Nicholas Flamel, grant you for the love that I for you and in honour of God, for its Glory and
praise of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and the sacred Trinity, to who I beg that,
starting from this moment, illuminate you and lead you on the way to the truth and of the light as
well as of the salvation way. Amen.

THE FERMENT

Pay attention, now, in the good form of working, to raise or elevate the philosophical paste and
to force and increase it by means of the suitable and philosophical ferment. You will take three
parts of fine powdered gold and six parts of animated mercury with a part and half of red
sulphur. Mary these ingredients together, grind them in a glass mortar like butter or cheese, place
this composition in a closed matrass to the fire like the hen heat. During the cooking, don't get
tired and you will see a wonderful thing, that the human comprehension is surpassed and cannot
argue nor deny, such is beautiful the work of the nature with its mutations which reveals itself in
all colours that dazzle as they obscure the handler's eyes so intensely that there is nothing in this
world that can do the same. Then, in suitable time, you will observe that your vase will contain
red invigorate powder, of like blood colour just as purple. Here it is complete the art of the
philosophical alchemy, indeed, such a grand miracle that is incredible. Dont hurry to say that
you possess this mundane treasure and know that it cures all diseases see even all infirmities that
cant be cured by any doctors except by the philosophical doctor. Thus, it will transmute any
melted metal in the crucible, by the injunction of it even on boiling mercury, in fine, pure, clean
and coloured gold and resistant to the whole judgement of men, of the fire, even of the lead and
of the voracious wolf, a thief that snatches everything besides it, but still better, it transforms
stones and mineral crystal or rocks in fine rubies.

TO PRODUCE FRUITS OF THE SPRING IN THE WINTER

You can still make another thing, this is, if you want flowers and fruits in the cold of the Winter,
dissolve 6 grains of the referred red powder when it comes out of the vase in 10 pints of water of
lukewarm dew and water such tree or flower that you want, placing them inside your home or
covering them with straw or hay and you will see, in little time, a sudden and wonderful
vegetation and growth which will surprise you very much.

WAY TO USE THE MEDICINE

In order to inform you as how you should use this medicine for the health of your body and of
your memory, notice that when you have the powder out of the vase it is crimson red, you should
dissolve some grains in white wine or aquavitae, until that the wine is coloured, just gilded,
because it is the right mark. Don't fear to give it to the sick 12 or 15 drops in wine, broth or other
liqueur and they will be cured as by miracle. Don't ever boast of having done that, because men
are evil and envious, when unable of doing the same as others. Thus, so that you maintain the
daily health, take 9 drops of it, dissolved and gilded, in four seasons of the year, that is to say, in
22 of March, June 22, September 22 and December 22, in the liqueur that you prefer. Using it as
I teach you, you won't never suffer of illnesses and you will enjoy a happy life, full of health and
of wealth, you will be master of the whole nature, because you will possess more precious
stones, gold and silver than princes and kings.

HOW TO MAKE THE PROJECTION POWDER

STARTING FROM THE ELIXIR

Here in this procedure. Melt in a crucible 10 ounces of fine gold and throw in it, on the melted
gold, one ounce of the red powder. Leave in very strong fire for two hours, remove the crucible,
let it cool, break it and you will see in the bottom a red glass, that is the exalted gold, true and
royal powder capable of transmuting all metals in pure gold, better than the one found in the
mines. You can, like this, dispose of great fortunes, that even the kings cannot get without
acquiring it from other. Proceed, therefore, dear nephew, like me, by helping the poor, our
brothers in God, to ornament our Redeemer's temples, to free of the prisons many captive
detained for money, and the good and loyal use that you will do with it will lead you on the way
to glory and eternal salvation, in God's mansion, that I, Nicholas Flamel, wish you on behalf of
the Eternal Father, of Redeemers' Son and of the Holy Spirit Illuminator, Holy sacred and
adorable Trinity, Amen.

Grind the red glass and pour it in a kept closed in matrass and when you want to make good gold
starting from the lead, tin, brass, silver or mercury, make them to melt in a crucible and purges
them there, except the moon and the mercury just as soon as they smoke, throws on 30 or 40
pounds of this mercury, or of the others that I spoke to you, 5 or 6 grains of multiplied powder
and wrapped up in wax. You will be surprised to find them transmuted in gold. The faeces issued
aside from the said metals, pass everything to the ashes, place it on the furnace and, if they are
too red and powdery, melt silver and throw on the red mass grinded, or, if you prefer, marry it
with the mercury, place everything on the furnace, and Saturn, Jupiter, Mars or Sun, Mercury
and Moon will be fine, soft and coloured as suits. Remember to give thanks to God.

There is the whole mastery that I release to you without omitting anything, my dear and beloved
nephew of my so dear wife Perrenelle blessed in God. Amen.

Note that the first imbibitions of the red powder, one part transmute a hundred parts. One second,
thousand parts: of the third, ten thousand: of fourth, a hundred thousand, always stronger, thing
that cannot be understood if you dont see it with your own eyes.

So, if you intend to make a lot of gold, dear nephew, which is never advisable because it can
bring inconvenience and damage, put a one hundred thousand ounces of quicksilver in a great
iron cauldron to strong fire. When it is hot to smoke, have already prepared one ounce of scarlet
powder of the fourth imbibitions, wrap it with wax as a small ball and throws it on the said
quicksilver smoking. The smoke will disappear quickly. Activate the fire and soon it will change,
part in mass and part in powder of yellow gold that you will melt in a crucible and you will drain
in mass or ingot and you will extract of this whole mercury about 99,170 ounces of pure gold, of
unbeatable quality, that will use as you find best. Here you are, dear nephew, much richer than
all the kings, because you will have more than they and than they can dispose in entire mundane
