English influence/impact for Javanese and other local languages (Arief)

Globalization era, making all nation in this word to become competitive and have an effort to not
become an inferior.
Not an exception for indonesia, indonesia have taken many ways in many sector to be able to
compete with another nation. Especially in education and language sector.

Societys oppinion about English

1. English as millennium development goals.

Learning through English can play an important role in progress towards the millennium
development goals, as a valuable component of mother tongue based multilingual education.
The reality is that in many places English has also become a kind of local languageoften a
third language, with local adaptions--after the mother tongue and national language. Sometimes
it is seen as a neutral tongue among competing local languages. (WESA)

2. Your language decide your ranks in public eyes.

Nowaday, for some Indonesians, as mastery of English has become increasingly tied to social
standing, Indonesian has been relegated to second-class status. In extreme cases, people take
pride in speaking Indonesian poorly. Even sometimes they look down on people who dont speak
English, especially who speak in local language like Javanese.
Children who live in urban areas are usually victims of modernity. Many of these children are the
offspring of inter-ethnical marriages. Their parents could be Javanese and Sundanese, or Betawi
and Sundanese, so they are often native speakers of two different languages or even they cant
speak in both of it because their parents didnt teach them or they didnt have any chance to
learn it. (DENA)

In 1928, nationalists seeking independence from Dutch rule chose Indonesian, a form of
Malay, as the language of civic unity. While a small percentage of educated Indonesians
spoke Dutch, Indonesian became the preferred language of intellectuals.
Each language had a social rank, said Arief Rachman, an education expert. If you spoke
Javanese, you were below, he said, referring to the main language on the island of Java.
If you spoke Indonesian, you were a bit above. If you spoke Dutch, you were at the top.

3. Discrimination towards local language lessons.

Have you ever been scolded by your mother that your English mark in you raport got 6, but there
is no reaction when you achieve 10 score in your Javanese mark ??
Most all of parents will get the same reaction in the same case. So there will raise some ideology
that having bad or good mark in your local language lessos didnt give you any provit. And thats
why most of students in Indonesia Mostly in Java didnt have much motivation to know and
learn about their own local language. The first thing we have to change is parents orientation, as
a parents they cannot be one sided, javanese lessons is as important as another lessons.
according to Davit Harijono as an language obsrvers said that, the local language lessons
provide an important role in the preservation of local personalities, especially as an
communication and cultural tools.
